Nooooo, I've been working for weeks on external viewing mod and now they put one in?

Typical. :(

What an extraordinary reaction. This is in no way whatsoever an "arcade" feature. If anything, it's the opposite. I can't remember putting 10p in any game that involved sitting still and admiring the scenery (while 100% vulnerable, with no means of defending your ship).

He's gone! He's now done with the game and forum...

You do realise the people asking for an external view are not doing it for situational awareness, or spacial awareness? Indeed, if you stop to think for a second, if you drop into an external view mode, with no scanner (HUD) it could be argued that you are sacrificing said situation and spacial awareness? But let's not let facts get in the way of an argument...

He's "done with the game" - We of course won't see him on the forums or in game any more... Well not until tonight.

Surely he wasn't saying that just for dramatic effect?

Well said on both accounts...

Right on the 1st birthday of this thread, 3rd person view a fact, and the "definitive" thread definitively lost it's purpose. :D

For all of those who have negative views on this feature should view it this way: if this feature was in the game from alpha through to now All OF YOU would have used it one way or another as with the feature that are in the game now....

Well said! What's with the negative comments: adding an external debug cam/drone to allow for ship inspection & beauty shots/selfies only enhances gameplay & player experience. If you don't like the feature, don't use it!

There will be no gameplay advantage in combat, as you lose the ability to control your ship whilst using the cam/drone.

I recall in the original Elite, you could mount side & rear facing lasers to get a near 360 degree view of your surroundings, but you didn't have to use this feature if you preferred front view only.

You can take your debug cam and stick it to where you know. Come back if you've something proper at hand.

Debug camera, tsss...shakes his head in disbelieve and countinues to not play the game.

At least the forums are still here for you.

Pretty pumped to have a look.

Sounds like it'll be a little unwieldy for in-combat purposes too, so very happy with the way it's implemented.

How do you know people won't now start using external views to gain tactical advantage in combat, for example?

I would not care at all.
At the moment the Rift and Track ir uses have far move advantage over others than any outside view could give.

Anyway this new one sounds like it might be outside the gameplay completely.
Maybe it will not be available in open or even in solo, just a demo mode like the training tutorials.

Wows all round, I'm completely stunned by some of the responses concerning external view.
Can't we all just... Get along? lol :D

Here's my 'view' pun intended (sorry).

Elite was/is all about our possible future, provided we don't wipe ourselves from the face of the Earth in the meantime, and being able to 'experience' it in simulated game form, it's based around the year 3300 is it not?
Given the fact that drones are used today for all kinds of things including helping to wipe things off the face of this planet, it would make sense that they would have plenty of use in various forms in the future, so they have to play a part in ED in some form, I hope ED evolves to the point were we can choose other career paths, not just war, trade and exploration, what about a career in journalism for example? Journalists could launch a drone to get coverage of epic battles whilst keeping out of harms way (maybe heh heh) and trade their stories and footage to media stations thereby enriching the game in ways we could only imagine, imagine news footage popping up on youtube, even in game etc, showing possible scenes best described by Rutger hauer, "I've seen things you people wouldn't believe... Attackships off the shoulder of Orion, I've seen Seabeams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser Gate..." Gives me goose bumps just thinking about it.
My point is, for ED to evolve the way I think Mr Braben and the Devs are striving for, it has to include the kinds of things we would hope (for better or worse) would be in our future.
C'mon everyone, let your imaginations run wild, that's how dreams are born into reality.
BTW, What's the point in paying for skins when you can't see it in all it's glory?
You get a custom spray job on your car, bike whatever, what's the first thing you do normally? You stand back and admire it no? Then you take pictures to show everyone lol.
Just my two cents worth ;)
