And the wheel goes round and round ;)

You asked for a logical justification for why shields could go offline using a remote control drone.

I (imo) gave numerous ones.

Not very good and/or plausible ones though. The whole "nerfing of drones" needs a better solution than shields going down IMHO.

They seem plausible to me, but that is the great thing about opinions and backsides...........................

edit

FWIW as I said earlier, to me personally, I could not care less about your immersion or lack of as that would be your choice.

on the surface of it, if you wanted to play the entire game outside of the ship, then as long as that did not take too much dev time to implement then I would be fine with that as it has zero effect on me playing in my ship.

I know FD have stated they are not concerned with game balance in this instance and it is all about "immersion" so it just so happens their fears of 3rd person mean they are worried about it for entirely different reasons than my fears.

If the game was offline only then anything could go as far as I am concerned.... but it isnt, and whilst so many here have stated with a certainty that no external view could ever give an advantage in combat, my worry is that every game I have played with this option has done exactly that!.

Time will tell, I do not believe FD will be taking any notice of this thread anyway so we will see what they come up with..

To give the camera drones a bit of in-game functionality, how about tying them to hull repairs? They could be purposed as external hull repair drones - which of course could be used even when the hull is perfectly fine. :D

Perhaps they could even be used to carry out repairs on other ships. This could give the game a bit of a "healer" mechanic.

Like this Idea a lot!
Also, I would personally see this as a module you would have to buy, and use up one of your hardpoints or utility slots.

Outside View / Yes_No

Will FD have out side views per FE_II:rolleyes:
I would like to know from someone in production.
If no, then I can quit wasting my time and delete from HD.:D

A simple Yes or No e_mail will suffice.

Unlikely during gameplay if that's what you're referring to. There are plans to implement 'drones' that will show an external view of your ship, but the Frontier team are still discussing how best to use them without imbalancing combat mechanics, e.g. seeing an enemy ship around an asteroid.

if its a personal email you're after you may as well delete ED now and be done with it cause that isn't ever going to happen.

alternatively you could have a look through the Design Discussion Archive and the newsletters and find out for yourself.

The link I posted is probably going to give him everything he wants and much faster than searching. The OP has done a great job of consolidating everything that we know about the external view question along with quotes and links from the developers all in one nice post. :)

wen i am play elite i dont worry wat plane is look like from outside same like wen i drive my car i dont think 'hmmm i wish i could flot outside car do rotate view see all around' :S

I am space plane pilot i am focus on my cockpit and on the space maybe they can do a feature like in the station you can go out from your plane and look around to do admire how beautiful she is look today ;)

also for do screnshot no HUD no cockpit is simple solution have camera wat is on outside of plane like drone in army use and small screen inside cockpit(MAKE SO YOU NED TO BUY THIS IS EXTRA ITEM IN THE FITTING SHOP) and you can make a picture and save then after is ok to look the photo wat you make :)

outside the plane view is not need in the space is crazy idea if you need this you play maybe wrong game is SPACE FLY SIMULATOR GAME and out of body flot around outside is only simulate onr thing... too much drugs

Flight simulators have external views. Im with 4 sagan. I think it would be dope to have and do cool screen shots. Btw newer cars now have cameras all over the exterior.

Btw is there a rear view camera? Could use that.

i think it should and if people think it will ruin combat just have it set be un usable when hardpoints are deployed

Better question:

Why should it NOT have outside views?

The world and ship already exists as "3D data", a different view from outside will be rather easy to implement technically.

There is no reason why there shouldn't be outside views.

except for one big reason, gameplay.

3rd person fundamentally alters it.

Camera drones, I can understand that there might be a lore-based justification for them. I still think their planned inclusion is 100% pandering to the kind of preening Waynes who think Clarkson is God, however. I think that the pilot should get a drone view on the ship's HUD, and should only be able to play back the footage on their helmet HUD (i.e. full-screen) once the drone is returned to the craft and attached to the upload port.

The pilot obviously stops being in full control of the ship once the drone is deployed, and they should not be able to discard the drone and regain control immediately. If they get shot to bits or float into the path of a big asteroid whilst taking a selfie, that's their dumb fault for being so vain.

But anything else? Not for me.

I bought into this caper because I want to pilot a ship amongst the stars, not because I want to direct a movie about piloting a ship amongst the stars starring me.

Unexplained out-of-body experiences were not listed as a game feature. If a lack of them is really going to make someone uninstall the game, it's probably a good thing.

What's next on the OP's "I must have this arbitrary feature implemented or I'll have a tantrum" list - slow-mo and action replays?

Now, rear/left/right camera views would be a useful piloting tool, and would not be out of place compared to the original Elite, which had multiple views. I always thought that being able to float around your ship in the Frontier games was immersion-breaking (and a bit silly), so I'm happy that it seems the developers agree, at least presently.

people feel the same way about gimbled weapons, breaking immersion from the fight making it too easy and feeling detached. i hear time and time again how FD wanted it to feel like a ww2 dogfight. sometimes i can play 1 handed with the mouse and rest my chin on the other when fighting the AI. so i try not to use them like you could choose not too use 3rd person view
frontier had 3rd person view.
yes we know its tryin to stay realistic but theres also a lot of gamey unrealistic stuff too, if you don't want to play a game where your looking at your ship fly through space 'staring you' then don't use it, nobody would force you too, the real issue i guess is you think it will make people better at dog fighting or els you wouldn't throw your dummy out the minuet somebody raises the point of 3rd person. it wouldn't be mandatory to have to use it.
head tracking gives advantages also but you don't see people going on a rant about the people that use it.

anyway im not fussed either way but i would like to look at the ship i like and bought, also the paint job i spent money on, you know to help me get through those long runs in the 400 billion systems with 37 other people playing

you never know those movies people will make with it might bring more people into the game

ps.. just thought of another immersion breaking feature, flying up to another ship and looking at the cockpit to realize there is nobody flying it lol. the same AI names (cult sci-fi movie puns) over n over again or the 4 vipers that enter the star port area and break formation as soon as you jump in and finally the piece of furniture that is the dreadnaught in The war zone that takes no more damage and get sidewinders stuck in its orifices and slowly pushed along. outside cam would just kill it

Nothing useful. We will have camera drones latter on so we can make some screenshots outside of the ships or videos. But the HUD will be removed from the view making combat practically impossible.

The game is going for immersion and being in third person mode is immersive breaking.
