exactly, talk about bad marketing decisions, I would buy paint schemes if I could see them. but whats the point.
why they cannot just make external view not available in combat mode is beyond a stupid choice all the way around.

they're really shooting themselves in the foot on this one. I love the game, but this will cost them many sales and isn't that what its really all about ?

Ok, I take back my disappointment with FD and very much appreciate the info that the forums supplied to me in a email with this link
https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=12464&p=673649&viewfull=1#post673649

this is how its done folks

A space-walk for repairing your ship is simply AAAwesome! The best solution ever and infinite freedom indeed wil rise.

*DCS World is far the best and accurate flight sim ever created for Pcs. It has all kind of external cameras and it does not break any immersion at all.

I always played sims featuring only a cockpit view, i use trackir and everything but i'd love too a 3rd person view. Just for the looks, i mean, i want to see my ship from time to time.

The poll itself is very misleading. A casual observer might think that the majority of people want an external cam because the Yes bar is the longest and it is listed as having 50.47% of the vote.

No this will break immersion, No the scanner is all you need and No keep everything within the ship are just three ways of saying the same thing. This artificially makes the bars look shorter. If you combine these three, 325 people said no to external view.

28 people said a combat external view. 16 said they want to know where they are being attacked from. This can be grouped with combat, so 44 want a combat external view.

162 people want a non-combat external view. Why this is listed as 50.47% of the vote, I don't know. 162/531 = 30.5%

No: 61.2%
Yes (combat): 8.3%
Yes (non combat): 30.5%

The poll is broken, people could vote more than one thing and many did, messing up the end result. The poll is irrelevant and it's obvious that lots of people would be OK with a VERY controlled and limtied kind of external camera. Hell, we even went as far as saying that it would be a positive start to have a free rotation camera WHEN DOCKED IN YOUR HANGAR AND OUTFITTING instead of the fixed ones. Does that break immerion for you too? External fixed camera, yes. Free rotation one, no?

It is obvious that the "immersion" argument is a straw one and at this point it is just a thing "on principle" that for some reason FD decided to arm wrestle people on.

Again, I think it is clear enough that we all want to keep playing the game FIRST PERSON ONLY. We just want a few tools, even super basic, to have a chance to appreciate our ships and decals and paintjobs. Even if only when docked. What's wrong or immersion-breaking about doing it when docked? Is this pilot supposed to be nailed to the seat, fused with it?

No external view of your own ship while in flight yet? Are you kidding FD?

Ok. I like the game even without an offline mode or released in bared bones. But not giving a external view of your on ship while in flight( And I'm not saying third-person view) is a pity because it not allows you to enjoy even more the game now.

There will NEVER be an outside view for your ship, except maybe by purchasing camera drones. This was stated some time ago. It means that everyone has the same advantages. There is so so much to enjoy about the game, perhaps you should start being optimistic, or play another game.

:D So vain, much selfie

There's been a lot of discussion revolving around 3rd person/external cams, I think FD are still deciding how best to implement it without creating advantages in combat and to keep their inclusion as something that can be explained in game lore, most likely a camera hard-point or drone. Something for the new year hopefully!

In the year 3300, pictures of your own ship, or 'shelfies' will become all the rage!

Its pointless and not needed.

A definitive discussion may be helpful!

A lot of backers and testers have been discussing it for 2 years. The definitive discussion thread probably still exists somewhere.

It is for this reason I am dumbfounded when new people feel the need to arrive here shouting about stuff and making critical observations without doing a little bit of research.

I guess its good that games are diverse to suit different people. Some people only like some types of game. Others enjoy games, but in different ways. Playing something like Freelancer I find it only slightly more immersive than playing starfox. Fun, but difficult to take the 'story', such that it was, seriously.

I find it difficult to get immersed in 3rd person MMOs. I guess I do enjoy them occasionally, but there is no sense of playing a role - they will never be an MMORPG. I find it a pity that first person MMOs are no longer made and haven't been for a decade now.

So why not have both? I think you can only design the mechanics to fit one or the other. I.e the few MMORGs that have offered both become impossible to play in single person competitively. And in shooters that offer both you get constant switching between them for long range sniping vs close shooting.

Wait until we get the ability to EVA, then you can float around and look at the outside of your ship to your hearts content :)
I EVA from my car all the time to look at it, I have to admit though, it doesn't work so well while it's in motion, and nor should it!

There are other space games with that external camera option. You might want to google for them. Elite Dangerous is not one of those products.

Plus the difference in pilot field of view from the cockpit across all the different ship models makes up for the fixed view as there would be no point in having them IF you could simply go 3rd person.

Like it or not it is proper IMO.

The position of FD, if I remember correctly from the dozens of topics RE this that have cropped up over the last two years, is that they will consider the "camera drone" route, but that ship operations when in that mode will be severely limited. Basically you won't be able to do much flying, and definitely wouldn't be able to engage in combat. It would really just be for taking pretty screenshots next to stations or stars etc. Suits me fine. I don't think there should be an option to fly and play the game fully in 3rd person, so external "pretty shot" mode while the ship is pretty much stationary will work fine for me.
