I Tried to explain but the MERGE hammer came down and so we keep seeing these threads popup, come back later when you have been merged, then scan the thread for the answers you seek

External View Is Going To Be Great

This is most definitely the feature I have been waiting for more than anything else. Thank you very much ED!!

I'm pleased at this news too. Might actually buy a decal for my Asp now :)

Did MB say how the external view will be restricted so as not to give the player any tactical advantage in combat etc?

EDIT - Ok that clarifies it:

No, you wont be able to controll your ship when in external view.

Wait, what? Why is Frontier implementing an External View?!

Referring to the newsletter "This week, we’re taking stepping outside and taking a look at our ships with the new external camera, available in March’s Wings content update."

Before anyone pings me on this, i've already looked through main poll/discussion thread and i'm not digging through 200+ threads as it should be consolidated.

I have a few questions for those who know more about this feature being implemented as it concerns balance/immersion.

1) Can you use this external view and rotate the camera during combat?
2) Will there be new keybinds to control camera?
3) Will any HUD elements be toggled or enabled during external cam or is it purely cosmetic?

If usable in combat this would prove to add to some serious balance concerns. #wtfneedsradar

I'm just afraid this is what external cam would be like

Any insight would be helpful. Thanks!

There's no reason why this should not be possible going by today's technology. Anyone flying on the A380 can access external camera mounts. Yes they are fixed to the aircraft but using the Flight Control Computer and other sensors to calculate the exact position of the ship and then overlay a graphic is certainly possible. It'll make the paint jobs and decals more profitable for FD and give us more opportunities for great screenshots.

I'm hyped about it. I can't remember how many times I've taken a screenshot or made a video and thought, "Gee, I wish there was an external camera."

I imagine it'll work like the camera in Darkstar One on Xbox 360; no ship control in third-person, but the camera can be angled at any position and zoomed in/out. First person was the only perspective in which you could pilot your ship. DarkStar One wasn't really one of the great space games, so it surprises me to see myself being thankful that a Darkstar One feature is in Elite. Why FD didn't allow players access to the external camera is beyond me.

But, what's done is done. At this point, I'm just glad FD is listening to its fans :D
