The overwhelming community response in your poll was no so I would base assumptions on that especially since there has been no mention of it.

Give the thing so little fuel it has a countdown timer, like the old lunar lander game.

If you drop it, and turn the main engines on, there is no way its catching up to you.

You're assuming it's not in? I wouldn't feel comfortable with that assumption with the information we currently have?
I feel fairly comfortable yes, since the information we currently have is this:
http://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?p=187584#post187584
http://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?p=194431#post194431

And in interests of balance, this:
http://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?p=187897#post187897

So there you have it.

The forecast is "definite no" to "at best, mild ambivalence". They might give us access to some of the tools they use, but don't hold your breath for a dedicated 3rd person point of view, since it's counter to what Frontier are trying to do.

That was the 3rd person point of view forecast for 21st of May 2014. Now on Radio 4, The Archers... Beep beep beeeeep.

Many similar comments are in the original post (OP) of course...

I don't see it as B&W as that. And I definitely don't read it as a "definite no".

All the comments I've read seem to imply that the game should indeed be played from the cockpit. ie: There is not intention to allow the game to be played from an external view. Cockpit is king!

That said, I don't believe many people wanting an external view want to play the game from an external view... they simply want to be able to view it (enjoy it) from time to time from external view. And indeed a couple of official comments (see the OP) suggest an external view may be offered by some method.

But you may be right, which I sincerely see as a real shame. But if that's the way it plays out, so be it. :)

(a) it's not my poll
(b) the poll's choices are terrible
(c) they add up to more than 100%

In summary - Best ignore the poll :)

Nice to see ED have a video shot external for the type 9 in the dev update.... no external view planned you cannot be Sirius....

Ah yes, at about 1m54s there an external view exactly along the lines of what we'd want - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TGf9OPot8Sc&t=1m54s

No surprise they have options to obtain external views. Unfortunately, don't see how this affects whether we get it or not though.

But I would say it's a little misleading though to show lots of in game footage, and then throw in a nice external shot that may well not be available in game.

The mystery continues :)

No more misleading than watching an advertisement for a car that you are considering purchasing - you will not get an external view when you're driving it.

Umm... Only because it's somewhat impossible and unusual?

An external view in a computer game/flight sim is obviously fairly normal. So showing it in action in what appears to be in game action, could make some people believe it's available.

Anyway, let's not start wrangling over it. Clearly the feature is in there for the developers - no surprise there - so the question remains (just as before), will it make it to our greasy mits! :)

Come on , you can do better than that surely.

Why? The Dev Diary is a promotional piece - like an advertisement - it's job is to show off the quality of the game using whatever tools the developers want to. Just because an external camera has been used here, do you similarly propose that we have access to the scripted fly-through mechanic used for the Sidewinders & Capital Ship video?

People please! The dev diary shows an external view in action. It's NO surprise to us at all this feature is available to them. This changes nothing. Will we get the feature? We don't know!

And whether or not showing an external view along with other in game action or not could be argued to be misleading? It just comes down to a personal take on it. So it's really not important :)

A small point, you may notice the ship is being "flown", ie: Its direction is changing, but the view is remaining in the same position at the same angle. If the camera is a bot, this would be its most natural maneuver. It's least natural maneuver would be to instead stay in a relative fixed angle to the ship as it would result in more work. Like I said, a small point :)

So, because other games have it means that it should be included in E: D?

I think it would be a damn shame for it not to be.

This promises to be one of, if not the best space game in many years.

What a shame it would be if we cannot view the incredible galaxy that has been given to us, other than through a cockpit.

I will say though, that I would be happy if it was at the very least allowed in single player, as that is what I intend to play and It would get around the multiplayer advantage argument.

If we are not allowed to use mobile phones whilst driving, I do not see this being permitted - especially as the idea of a swarm of the things in a congested town centre has "personal injury claim" for the pedestrians affected after collision between them (or even just running out of power) written all over it.
