If you could use it in SOLO online to gain an advantage over NPCs and make it easier to progress through the ranks of certain factions to obtain ships and weapons that you would have either, not been able to obtain, or struggled to obtain, then you could transfer over to OPEN online with a setup you wouldn't have had playing OPEN all of the time.
And if I take one Sidewinder (free) after another to blast NPCs in Solo Play with no real risk because I keep my money, so worst case I have to try for some weeks? Would you want the free Sidewinder to be dropped, as well?

as this game was designed with the intention of never having 3rd person cameras, I'd say that's a fair way.

Yes, that was the plan no 3RD PERSON view!

You know the difference between 3rd Person View (looking over the shoulder, HUD and interface so you can play the game from outside the ship) and EXTERNAL view (A camera floating around the ship, giving yopu a look at the paintjob, let you see how landing gears and cargo hatch work etc. NO HUD, no aiming at other ships)... the worst you can do in external view, even in Open play would be to hide stealthily behind a rock and lurk around its edge to see if somebody is coming, or have a look behind your ship to see if somebody is on your six (I would prefer the scanner for that, as I don't have to twitch my brain with the reverse steering in such a situation.

Again, nobody wants a 3rd Person combat view!

All people ask is to have a look at their ship, like the devs do for Screenshots and videos, not even necessary to simulate a "drone", as this may be an advantage if used from inside the cockpit.

I can see no objection to the proposal other than that FD might want to keep basic mechanics the same regardless of playing mode, to give players no reason to prefer solo over multi because of differences in mechanics. David Braben would like everybody to take part in the online universe.

It would be cool to have some type of cinematic camera option while in flight... I know it might sound lame, but I love to just sit back and admire space and the "spacescape" from time to time. Maybe even take a screen shot or two of something I find "pretty".

As far as a 3rd person camera view of the ship for flight purposes I say absolutely not. would create unbalance in combat.

Either way would work, I really don't see any harm in doing it while in flight. If it were purely cinematic you would see no HUD or locked targets. Spotting a unlocked target isn't exactly an easy feat. Ships are a bit hard to see out in space, especially at range.

I just like the idea of taking a photo of my ship orbiting a planet or near a star. I'm a sucker for nice looking graphics.

I'm wholly in favour of an external view, and i'd be amazed if they sell 10% of the paint jobs they could without it. I certainly won't buy one until I can see it in flight.

I've played a lot of flight sims and the external views definitely enhance the experience, and no one would ever attempt a landing whilst in an external view, let alone combat, so I do not agree with the 'advantage' argument - and if I did I would simply point out that the 'advantage' is the same for everyone, and so not any sort of 'vantage' - be it an 'ad' or 'disad'.

I really can not understand what certain people have against this. I think your idea is great and i really, really want this in the game. For me it is a very important part of the game and as i will always be in solo it does not mater what anyone else thinks. Im sure it would be easy to implement so please that have external views i say.

Bravo old chap! great comment.

They have said many times that they are experimenting with 3pv camera views, and some implementation of them will be in the game. No ETA though, its probably coming after launch.

Sorry to post into an old thread but I was wondering.
What's the point of locking the view to the inside?
I mean it doesn't give anyone more advantage than those who use the Oculus Rift and more importantly, what's the point of buying all the expensive paint jobs if one cannot really see the ship from all angles when desired?

I respect those who prefer to lock the view for total immersion but that can be solved with an additional option to disable 3rd person views.

Cheers,

I'm in favour of an external view too. If it has to be in Solo mode so be it to appease the vocal waaahmbulance drivers but I'd love to see the paint jobs I bought properly. Most of all I'd just like to be able to view the ship and freely rotate around and zoom in/out. I can't see what harm it would do. I really think these ship models deserve to be examined up close :)

heres my $0.02 worth - how about having a flyby view like in FSX or IL2? ie its fixed somewhere forward of your craft and it watches your craft as you fly by. Good for camera shots, etc, almost useless for anything else.

I did not even buy any paintjob, yet. It is tempting if you see the nice artwork... well, if you could see it, that is.

In the 'making of' video in newsletter 47 there's a big deal made on ships, of how the engines look and the working f l a p s (sorry it appears to be a banned word...) and how cool and iconic everything appears etc. Why do all that if you can't see it? Unless you want to stalk some other ship for a while and get really close....

Hello, can someone pls explain why an external camera is unfair?

p.s. I do prefer cockpit view in combat also but an external camera would be nice for peaceful moments.
