It was discussed during alpha. It is more a matter of whether FD will choose to implement it or not. Nothing to do with them not considering it before now.

This is about the 30 thread on this subject.

Personally couldn't care less about an external ship facing view but I would like a rear view outward looking camera.

One day when they implement leaving the ship on stations/planets, I'll be able to look at my ship from the outside. That is all I need.

Or, maybe, if they decide to do, for example, EVA hull repairs. That would be awesome, too.

But otherwise, please no. :)

Going to put my 2 cents in again. . I want external view for one reason and one alone. .
I want to take footage to make my own little mini movies just like how the background image plays on ED's official page (first and last square) or any of the official YouTube videos such as the Beta 3 trailer, especially the flybys with planets etc in back ground. but that's just me.

Not really "the masses have spoken", is it?

Please let's not try and guess the number of "fors" and "againsts" by the number of posts on a "reserved" forum :)

Clearly it's not a niche desire to have an external view. And clearly a good many players are concerned by the thought of its introduction in case it introduces any unwanted game play aspects (eg: benefits during combat).

That's all we can say TBH.

But, I'm sure we can all agree, if a third person view (drone) can be added which is nerfed cleverly enough such that it offers no obvious advantage (during combat) and still allows people to better enjoy looking at the Elite Dangerous universe... It's surely a win win?

So you would deny other players what they crave for? Even in SOLO play, that doesn't even remotly affect you? Just because you personally don't need it? ...sounds a little bit selfish to me :D

EDIT: By the way, the announcement of EVA etc. for the "future" was publicly announced , yesterday in the new video... until then, it was just an itme on the "to do" list... whatever "future" means in development time.
What people like me are missing from the first run out of Chango dock in first Beta is the possibility to simply have a look at our ship floating through space! No dogfight. No cheating. I feel cheated by Frontier whenever they show their nice videos and external views to tease us... Like the kid with the ice cream grinning back at you, as it knows you can't have one!

I am not being selfish and denying anybody anything. :p
I was asked for an opinion and I posted it. Besides, I don't develop the game, so I can't deny you things even if I wanted to. :D

I merely agree with devs' view on things.

I'd like, and think a really simple solution is :-Ext views Solo Play only.

Really don't understand the necessity of a 128 page thread on the subject.

Edit: Devs certainly underestimated the popularity this simple feature would have.

This, exactly. It's a big step backwards to limit the views you will be able to get of the gorgeous galaxy. Immersion is one thing, important to many, but for me more important than "first person" immersion is just the WOW factor of seeing the fantastic sights. That "immerses" me far more in a game. If I have a HUD and cockpit and controls and stuff in front of the views all the time, I can never appreciate them in all their true glory.

Yeah, limit to SP is fine. I expect I'll be in that mode much of the time anyway. In fact, is there a pattern here? Do 3rd person haters plan to concentrate on the MP aspects mostly, and 3rd person lovers plan to solo mostly? Hence the concerns or lack of them over "balance"?

This is is how I feel as well. I can see issues with MP in FPS a games with 3rd person but this game seems like the battlefield is way too big to make a difference. Do people think hiding behind an asteriod in wait for someone to float by to attack them is really going to happen that much?

I think the immersion factor is a bigger issue than the multiplayer advantages but that's easy don't use if you don't like. I play flight sims a lot and just love being able to see the plane from outside. Seeing all the control surfaces and animations work is just neat to me. While I have played the game so far I personally don't get a connection to my ship at all. Am I flying a cool looking ship or a box? Guess it doesn't matter. Sure I can go look at it in some space port but is it my ship I'm looking at? Hell if I know. I don't need to be able to fly around or do combat in a outside view but I would like to see my ship and connect with it. Maybe I'll buy a skin for it but right now it only needs to say "fragile this side up"

And what if someone wants to take a screencap of something they're doing with their buddies?
Whaaaaaaaaaaat!? A screenshot without 1/3 of the screen occluded by the cockpit? Why would anyone EVER want such a thing?

(yes, that was sarcasm)

No-cockpit (No-UI) screenshots are an expected feature. Why?
Because ~all other similar games have it, and ~all other multiplayer games have it.
Turning the entire UI/visuals off has been a feature of most/many/some/all first person rendered games since 2002. That it's not there is either a bad design decision or a serious oversight. Either way, terrible in it's current state. Fix it, FD.

Yep! So true... and I'm really interested to see what happens if the people not participating in the forum find out about this "little missing feature" after they bought the release version. My guess is, they start a storm.

I'm not trogging through a hundred pages just to see if this has been said already:

What a lot of piffle! Combat advantage! Are people really being serious? Ans if they don't put at least a simple external viewer in it speaks volumes for FD and their business model. How on earth could they expect to sell ship skins if we can't look at them! Increadible! I'm a huge fan of this game and of FD but come on, every other space sim out there has them and I've never seen even the slightest cribbing about them!

I agreeand i'm sure any Frontier investors read these post they would be tellin Frontier to put camera drones in game, even if its just to sell more ship skins.
