FD made an MMO without understanding how successful MMOs work

I agree that MMO's require even more money. There are plenty of avenues for them to do so. Do I think that giving them more money will make the game better? It's possible.

I wasn't a backer, I bought this in December when it was "released". It feels like an Alpha game I have on Steam called Entropy. I am not going to spend money in the hope that they make things better. When they make things better I will spend the money to purchase them.

i completely sympathize with you. i know very few people are willing to put money on a gamble. i feel that David and FD deserve my support, and i'm willing on giving them an opportunity to lose my trust and money. so i will throw money in hope that they will use it correctly. if they do, people like you will throw money too after they release something awesome. if not, well then i'll take my next months pay check and spend it on something else. atleast i will move on knowing that they didn't fail because they went broke because i didn't contribute.

Space is full of emptiness... the chance of running into someone out there in that vast emptiness... chances of you feeling alone while doing your thing... if you do encounter another, whom will most likely be hostile to you and will want your stuff...

Yeah, I think they nailed it.

FD does not see a need for another MMO like all of the rest. FD and the Backers have spent a lot of time crafting a Galaxy they want to play in. I can't see, after all of that effort, just turning around and making it like WoW in space.

People like you are a dime a dozen. You think you could have gotten the job done, without ever making one single compromise, on budget, on time. Pffft.
Sorry, I must have missed the "it isn't quite finished" discount when I was buying this game as a full retail title a few weeks back.

Then they should probably stop selling it as one.

As for WoW in space, I'm going so assume you've never played a sandbox mmo before?

I played Eve early on in its development. I wonder if the Op considers that a true MMO. I ask because when I played it, it was older than Ed is now and had barely any PVE content whatsoever, was a shell compared to what it is now and was only a pvp game in space. And not nearly as fun pvp as many other MMO games I've played, particularly given pvp in Eve demanded months of time for a player to compete.

In my opinion, ed is a much more complete all- round game than eve was back then. And it's been out less time. Not to mention ed's combat, flight model and upgrade system is way more fun, the galaxy is infinitely bigger in scale and has just as much detail - if not more, given the activities you can do.

Eve had rats and mining and crafting. And "working" for a Corp. And pvp.

Ed has way better PVE content, it has pvp which is much more immediate for new players, it has true exploration, it has mining, it has conflict zones, it has capital ships, it has community goals, it has trading, it has smuggling, it has PVE piracy. Oh and it has missions.

I know most of that content is work in progress. But it's still loads more than eve had when I played it.

A little perspective is needed here.

They can do what they want when they want, don't presume to know what it will be.
Also, ED doesn't have 1% of the depth of content that WoW does, it has the bare bones of what WoW has though, so be careful what you wish for here.

I had never heard of the Elite series before Nov. last year. When I was considering purchasing the game, I did a little investigation. I wanted to know if Elite: Dangerous was worth buying. I found out it was going to be released as it was, and why. I knew what state the game was in when I purchased it, and I was not disappointed. Do you know why? I did my due diligence. I looked before I leapt. You might try that in the future.
'
I knew right from the start that E: D was going to be and develop differently from other games. You need to be in control of your senses when you see advertizements, for any product. You need to pay attention to the available info. Any trouble with what state the game is/was in and what you expected, as far as I am concerned, is on you.

As for SAndbox MMO's and all of the other buzz-words people like to throw around; Everyone has their own definition of these things and use any of the definitions out there to prop up what ever cause they are backing.

Gamer entitlement underscores 'I paid for it, I want to recieve goods I imagined I will get' part of the deal, not 'actually when you think about it it's quite good' deal. Otherwise developers will think they are doing something right - and we simply can't have that, we have to squeeze them, punish them, etc. etc.

To be fair though as consumers we shouldn't have to do research to find out if we are buying a finished product or not lol

A lot of people are confusing MMO with MMORPG. This is an MMO because there is only 1 galaxy and every single player that plays this game is in it, don't matter if they are in solo/group/open. What one guy does in solo can impact what I have to do in solo, Taking #1 in a CG for example.

And are you sure about that?
Credits could be loot drops.
Raids against boss mobs could be CZ or RES zones
Functions for guilds/corps/fellowships could be wings and group mode

I disagree. A good game could be made with a good idea and some talent, I do agree on the time part though, it takes time. In the real world, time = money.

But you can have money and time and still not have a good game.

Pretty darn sure....I don't see loot as being creds..I see loot as things like armor, guns and other ship gear that you may or may not use. I don't see CZ or RES as boss raids just player vs Environment instances.
Wings are nothing more than up to 4 players getting together to play....no guild functionality like banks, home bases, ranks within the guild...so on...
So ED is a Co-op game not a massively multiplayer game....32 in an instance max is far from massive.

I'd rather it be this way than turn into an Eve clone.

You are quite wrong. All producers attempt to fill your mind with the pros, and cast out all of the cons of buying/using their product. Consumers that just follow the shiny lights get what they deserve. FD was pretty clear on what would be in and what wouldn't be in the game at release. I found everything they promised when I downloaded the game.

Wow has lot of depth? Besides stitched together lore? Seriously? :)

Don't get me wrong, I loved what Blizzard did with WoW during 2006 - 2010, but those times are gone. Depth story wise? Hell sure. Quest wise? Same things over and over again, without any effect on world.

Seriously! And pets, what's an MMO without pets! I want a space poodle that floats behind my ship and barks at NPCs. Also space bikinis

Just cripple the primary hauler's thrusters, hardpoints, and FSD, in the Cargo instance and push it where you want it! You can even rub up against it when you need some cuddle time!

Bingo. Problem was that we overhyped ED 1.0 - and FD didn't reign in despite sawing all threads here. I guess blame goes around on this account, starting with guys like me - because I was one of those saying that I expected ED 1.0 having much more than it had. To be frank, last few Gamma updates added a lot to the game, but it was still quite short of stuff we had imagined.

I think FD learned that lesson there and dev updates and telegraphing changes and features in their posts give much clearer idea where ED is going. As for community...lot of people still blame FD, while ignoring fact they mostly kept their tune to things we saw at launch.

WoW quests vs ED missions, erm, OK!
Same things over and over again? Come on man as ED players we shouldn't even go there ha ha!!!!
Story? WoW's is bad, totally, but for depth of lore overall it has ED beat hands down, unless you count ED's steamy romance novels on Amazon I guess?
No effect on the world? You haven't played it for a while eh? You can't make huge changes but you can change the view of the world from your eyes through your actions, permanently yeah.

On every single like for like comparison (economy etc etc) WoW beats ED easily without any shadow of a doubt.
WoW snobbery sucks because it puts blinkers on people and makes usually uintelligent folk talk rubbish I find without any objectivity, such is their clamouring to be all LOL WOW MCDONALDS SUX about it.

To be fair, the concept of a game being done when you buy it, is obsolete. Digital distribution + continued developer support = "not finished".
There is a difference between 'unfinished' and a game that is done but will have additions later, you know it and I know it.

One of them actually affects game world. One doesn't.

Same things over and over again? Come on man as ED players we shouldn't even go there ha ha!!!!

I said same things over and over again *without* affecting game world.

So you haven't even read ED tie-ins I guess? Are you here just to troll? And WOW story for Lynch King was actually very good. It was shining example what WoW could be, before going down to tatters due of Blizzard growing into greedy entity.

No effect on the world? You haven't played it for a while eh? You can't make huge changes but you can change the view of the world from your eyes through your actions, permanently yeah.

What?! :D Please, don't make laugh. Please. Someone who played WoW since beginning of time. Please.

On every single like for like comparison (economy etc etc) WoW beats ED easily without any shadow of a doubt.

WoW has no economy, player AH is not an economy. Please research what that term actually means.

WoW snobbery sucks because it puts blinkers on people and makes usually uintelligent folk talk rubbish I find without any objectivity, such is their clamouring to be all LOL WOW MCDONALDS SUX about it.

I didn't say WoW sucks. But it is just a MMORPG theme park. You can't change a thing there. Quest outcomes are predestined. Written down. Set in stone. Done over, and over, and over, and over again. It is just how MMORPGs are done. There's nothing wrong to enjoy it - I love SWTOR for what it is. I don't expect persistence or any impact from my gameplay to it's world.

Honestly we could argue about that all night, I think you are wrong on all counts, so there you have it.
I like both games so I am not about to pick holes in one to champion another.

Sorry, Bored! of this type of thread, Go play WoW if its not for you, your obviously a WoW fanboy. As far as I'm concerned, multiple players can play on one server and play the game together, making it a massively multiplayer online game, its that simple.

Are you talking to anyone in particular or just flailing your arms around at random?
