First exploration

And well you do realise when you reach Sag A it is just less than half way to Beagle. Plus you need to make that same travel back too. It is not for faint hearted. Though you'll make a lot of money with said trip, thats sure.

Regarding the Abyss and crossing to Beagle Point, a 35 LY range and this:

is quite doable.

Little Chick flight report
I've travelled 2,096.19ly ly from start point
Max jump distance tonight 35Ly

Logged all my discoveries up to this point at Sadr Logistics Depot
Moved on and discovered more unique things
My rank is now Pathfinder
I am now here

Chick out o7
When you turned you data in... how many 1st discoveries did you have? For each new 1st discovery, a new flight feather is created....soon you will be 1 ugly chick until all your feathers come in. (smiling)

Where exactly is the abyss ?
At the other side of Galaxy, far-side rim. Star density drops out rather dramatically. I'm not saying that trip to Beagle with 35 ly jump range is undoable. One can do it, but needs rather carefull route planning. Most likely manually.

I had 1 complete system, 9 bodies mapped, lots of other single planets
Where do I find the feathers on screen ?
the feathers are an allegory.... as you get more and more first discoveries.... your :feathers will come in... no longer are you a flightless chick like a week ago but a young explorer coming into your dues.... as you report the discoveries, the chick gets more feathers.

Take a look at your galaxy map.... notice the arms that swirl? The spaces between the arms are Abysses.... some are large and some are small but they all pose a barrier to your travels as Cdr Zieman and Cdr TiberiusDuval have pointed out.

They are very cool. I never saw my first one until I got to Colonia.
I'd have to check my vids (which I'm not gonna do!) but I think I saw my first asteroid base as I prepared for my trip to Colonia. They are indeed very cool. Probably my favourite type of station. Even if it's just for the aesthetic value.

As for Yah-ta-hey's* comment regarding fuel stars etc., I tend to wait until my ship has enough fuel left for one decent jump, charge the FSD, and check the upper right panel to see if the next star might be scoopable. If it's a brown dwarf, ABORT ABORT ABORT! I'll then check the galaxy map for any bright looking stars nearby, and that method has never let me down once.

*I'm gonna need a nickname for that.

There are pilots who believe that if you run your ship on empty... you get a longer jump range as fuels is heavy. I have nevre had the nerve to try that intentionally. There are times where I forget to look at the gauge and find my self with a message that says I have inadequate fuel to make the jump. Decisions, decisions.. go back to the star and scoop or find a star within 1 light year I can jump to(scoopable of course) or in extremis... call the fuel rats.

When it comes to fuel I'm one of those who like to have big auxiliary fuel tank, and scoop always when there is scoopable star, tank always as near full as it can be...Maybe it is over carefullness but on other hand I have never needed to call Fuel Rats :D

I carry an additional fuel tank, this means I can push the fuel a bit.

One of the first treks I made, I was doing the same as you, however, as my lifelong Elite Quest is to find a new (previously undiscovered) Guardian settlement (or similar) I realised, I need to check all systems that I come by, not just the ones with a fuel stop in it. I'd be furious if someone announced they found such a thing and the system next door had my name all over (it containing a scoopable star) and the one with the find in it had a Brown Dwarf. This is why I carry an extra fuel tank in the optional slots. To go through the 'barren lands'.

Before we had an actual region named "The Abyss", it used to refer to sparse area south of Beagle Point as other have mentioned. Here's an image:

(note that the marker for the Abyss can only mark one point on the map, but it refers to that entire sparse area that sort-of "walls off" the end of the galactic spiral arm)
