Games that should be remade.

If only one game could be remade, could someone please kick Andrew Braybrook out of self enforced game-coder-retirement, set him up with some kickstarter project and get us a Uridium 3 ? Please ? God that game would be a slamdunk on kickstarter. Uridium 3 with hi-res sprites and maybe have the leviathans procedurally generated :D

I will second the votes for Dungeon Keeper and Colonisation.
I was looking forward to the XCom remake but it isn't the game I was expecting. Good game but... I am keeping an eye on Xenonauts for that.
I have also never played a (pure) space combat game I enjoyed as much as X-wing and Tie-fighter. Normally I don't like story driven games but they were good.

Mainly though.
Daggerfall. Probably one of my favourite all time games. The best of the TES series. None of the others comes close although they are all good games (apart from Oblivion which doesn't count :p ). Daggerfall if remade properly would be amazing. Keeping an eye on DaggerXL but I would prefer a proper multi-million dollar remake really.

We do work hard archamedes and as I said, get someone to second the move and it shall be done. I like to try and give the forum as much a say in things as I can :)

Oh, while I am here, anymore updates on your movie archamedes?

Loved Gunship 2000, been searching for a while for the CD32 version, as for Dungeon Master have you had a look at Legend Of Grimrock? :)

Yeah Grimlock is quite good, Still not as good as DM or CSB though but its good nevertheless.

I heard its a bit of a disappointment unfortunately.

I thought Carrier Command Gaea Mission was quite good, I really got into it, Its great once you get the carrier up and running.

I would like to see a remake of Hired Guns (Amiga) one day, it was such an incredible experience playing it....

Thanks to the Indie scene and some recent steam gems many rpg's i would list (Bard's Tale, Dungeon Master, black Crypt) are covered by the very cool Legend of Grimrock.
On the other hand a version with today's technology/gfx from Cadaver , The Immortal and Elvire Mistress of the Dark would be nice also :)

Cadaver : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iKWCLVUtL3g
Elvira : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FuDzQLx4wP4
Immortal : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g-ggBsSrd1c

Was going to add Spy vs. Spy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yu2e866bEcM) but there was an iOS remake last year...

Railroad Tycoon please.

One that is more simular to the first game in the series. I want to run rails from west to east coast complete with signals and everything. :)

I'd love to see some "quality" graphic remakes of Kings Quest 1-IV, Codename Iceman and full remake of Microprose Midwinter and Ultima I-IV. A new version of Elite would be cracking too ;)

I remember a game called Laser Squad. That was pretty simple but rather good I think.

Well, you're in luck there. I'm in the process of doing that. Progress is slow at the moment as I'm trying to get an editor together so I can put together the core scenarios and build the engine up :D

To keep you going, go here to play a pure-remake.

Regarding some other remakes:

Retrospec

The 'Head over Heels' and 'Jetpac' remakes are amazing. Well, they all are really but those stand out for me.

Ovine by Design

Remakes of most of the Freescape classics as well as Cholo, XOR, etc. Great guys!

Oh, and those after Dungeon Keeper...

War for the Overlord

Probably only a fraction of what it would be if I looked through all my old collection.

  • Daggerfall
  • Final Fantasy VII
  • Final Fantasy IX
  • Realms of the Haunting
  • Return to Zork
  • Tekwar
  • Dune
  • Vagrant Story
  • Ghouls 'n' Ghosts
  • Ghosts 'n' Goblins
  • Rygar
  • Stun Runner
  • Road Rash
  • Godz

I'd like to see a new Laser Squad too, but you can still get Laser Squad: Nemesis and there are still people playing it online today. It's got a great single-player campaign too, well worth a look as it was made by the original creator, Julian Gollop.

Also, an updated Nebulus would look great on something like the 3DS, as well as Turrican 1 & 2 and The Last Ninja series. Had a soft spot for Tau Ceti as well, that was an Elite-style game ahead of its time. Modern tech would do it justice today. A proper update for the BBC's Exile is a must too, the original must have been one of the first games to have realistic physics.

Those Retrospec remakes are of an incredibly high quality. They update the graphics, sound and controls without losing the "feel" of the originals.

Not to sound obsessed, but a new Midwinter would be nice. (I mentioned this on my Introduction... post, and was delighted to hear there is a possibility!)

One thing I played a lot of was Evening Star/Southern Belle. It would be nice to see filled-3d rather than wire-frame graphics and all the other improvements that modern technology could bring :)

Oh - I know - Skooldaze/Back To Skool - this was, and still is, an amazing, original game. I know there was a modern remake, but it's not connected to the original in any way, and to be fair, isn't as good IMO. Contact Sam Cruise, by the same programmer, would also be rather nice.

Already mentioned that I'd like to see remade:

Dizzy - Sure, one of the Dizzy games got remade, but it wasn't Fantasy World or Magicland, so... Shame the Dizzy Returns Kickstarter failed too.

Rebelstar (+ Raiders), Laser Squad - I never got into X-COM, and I'm not sure why, but I really liked Rebelstar and Laser Squad.

Road Rash - Surely a must in today's market - take the Need for Speed or Burnout model, stick in bikes, let the riders beat the crap out of each other.

Skool Daze/Back to Skool - Aside from Klass of '99, the closest thing to a Skool Daze remake is Bully, although it's completely different in gameplay. Also, I find Back to Skool a surprisingly accurate retelling of my school life (get punched in the face in full view of teacher, teacher tells me off for being on the floor).

Also:
Rollcage - come on, it doesn't get more awesome than driving on walls at 800mph firing missiles at other cars. I always quote this (or at least Stage II) as my favourite racing game of all time, and I'm planning on a remake (or at least heavily inspired game) myself anyway, because the world needs more Rollcage.

Er... I would normally have a lot more, but since there are official Chaos, Abe's Oddysee/Exoddus, and of course Elite remakes on the way, I think I'd be a bit greedy introducing more games that wouldn't be as good as those anyway.

LOVED Skool Daze..

I'd like to see Stunt Car Racer brought back into HD with a HUGE multiplayer race...

That and the old text adventure games :D :D :D :D Why are these not adapted for web play?? Surely they could do it...

I remember from Sinclair User or Format magazine the Christmas article where he got a game, Quest for the Holy Grail and detailed the usual experience..

Awesome topic! Already feeling nostalgic...

Starflight - one of the best space exploration games that put you in command of a large ship. You had to manage your crew, the different functions of your ship, diplomacy, exploring space and planets...

Quarantine - was GTA before GTA. How many other games let you pimp out your taxi with flame throwers?

Speedball 2 - I know it was already remade but the remake sucked.

Streetrod - the only racing game I've played that let you buy and change your cars internals. Want a different engine? you had buy a new one in the trading post (making sure it was the same make as your car), unscrew the current engine, fit and tune the new one. Most of the fun wasn't even the racing, but setting your car up.

X-Com Apocalypse - I know I'm in the minority but this was the X-Com I felt was the best. Watching the workings of the city was great, and I prefered the real time combat. Also is pretty much the only X-Com game that hasn't been remade several times.

SWAT 3 - was a pretty good squad based FPS and unique in in its realistic execution. As I recall it was similar to the Rainbow 6 games of the time. The squad commands were basic but servicable, and the scenarios, tactics, and equipment you had was unique then would still be today.

Reminds me of 'Valhalla' on the speccy

Type Thor F*ck Mary
"Mary is not amused"
Type Thor F*ck Loki
"Mary is not amused"
It's all about Mary :p

Mel Croucher doing his Deus ex Machina Kickstarter was reminding me of another game of his, "iD". To win all you had to do was talk to your computer.

I wonder what that game would be like with all the fancy power and speed of today's processors.

I'm actually working on a remake of Laser Squad :D

Would love to see the following remade:

Gunship 2000 (even simply 'as is'. It was awesome.)
Frontier - Elite 2 (naturally)
Laser Squad (ahem)
Tau Ceti (8-bit game)
All the Freescape games (I know Ovine have started, but they need to finish them!)
Sensible Soccer (FIFA is ok but Sensible was pure gaming)
Eye of the Beholder series (Oh yeah baby, proper dungeon crawler)
