Give Yamiks an Alpha key!

He's presumably talking about the ones who have been getting early (ish) sight of things like dev diaries etc so they could get videos prepared in advance.
Aye.

I guess what I'm saying is the "our" in that from Frontier makes it sound like they're on the Frontier payroll or something "our core content creators".

Not that I think they are but the way that's worded from Frontier it sounds like you'd probably want to take any review from this group of content creators with a pinch of salt, so would be nice to know which ones they are. Do they have to say if they got the game for free?

Personal way of stating stuff? Intelligent sarcasm?
Being rude and toxic isn't that.
I'm kind of tempted to call you few names, compare your intelligence to a sex toy and describe your post as comprehensive as written by a monkey suffering from a diarrhea (while showing some visual masturbation jokes) and ask if you still consider me a decent guy with "personal way of stating stuff".

Again, why should Frontier help and promote a guy who behaves like that?
I'm not easily offended, and especially not by people who think a sex toy is naughty, or that we are not all monkeys. At least you try, and from that, you seem like a somewhat decent guy. :)

Frontier should accept that there will be some who are critical about their work. Some critique is fair, and some is not. Generally I think Yamiks is fair. Rude but fair. I just find it difficult to always figure out whether rude always equals bad, or whether being sensitive always equals good. On top of that Yamiks is often constructive in his sarcasm. Like when he, in his "Hyper Critical Review", which is basically a declaration of love to the game, allows himself to point out that the galaxy is somewhat boring without a developing story. That critique is spot on and fair, and the game would be way more excellent having it, which would be great for everyone who plays ED.

When I was studying for my diploma, we had a tutor who was a beast when it came to marking work. I took all my stuff to him before final submission to get the most honest appraisal of my work. He was ruthless. It was the best thing to do. Got me a pass and some. We often need to be criticised heavily to get to the good stuff. If the game is that good then Yamiks' view will be drowned out by all the good reviews.
Dunno. Critique in academia is (usually) based on established rules and knowledge about the field in question. I think it is a bit different than game criticism where critique usually follows more like a train of thought and personal inclinations. Especially since debates in game communities often tend to create established roles and inability to change one's mind seems to be very common.

To answer you both, in my opinion, it's not so much to do with him, it's more his audience I'm thinking about. For all I know this could have been the best outcome for Yamiks personally, they just gave him a stack more content for nothing, stuff a lot of his audience will lap up. One man, one view but he carries a lot of weight with his quite large audience. If they had given Yamiks the key I doubt it would have improved FD's image with his audience, that they haven't given him the key, has probably made their image worse with his audience. That is why I say 'PR disaster'. It maybe a strong term but I'm too dim to think of another.
Again: Yammiks is not a reviewer or journalists and nobody watches him for it. Plenty of review outlets will get a key and if EDO sucks they'll tell us.

Yammiks is a guy who figured out that craptalking a game is a niche where some money can be made. He'll be here for a bit, and at some point he'll move on to another game and craptalk that for a while.

Like it, don't like it, but let's call a spade a spade.

"our core content creators".
i read that simply as "content creators we like". meaning they were essentially saying "we don't like you (enough)". which is just dumb to say to someone who has a significant audience in something you have interests in.

that's a simple and plain bullarxe response trying to bring bad news with polite words gone wrong. it does not just display lack of empathy but total lack of foresight for the possible consequences. i still think this whole thing was a misunderstanding in frontier. otherwise it would be really obtuse decision making.

I hardly call this a PR disaster. The Gamers™ have such short memories. And even if they did give him a preview key, the chances are that Yamkiks would still be highly critical of Odyssey (especially as that's literally his schtick), so I can't imagine that this move would result in too many lost sales.

As I said before, game developers/publishers frequently overlook popular influencers if they consider them excessively critical, too much of a wild card or just a bad look for their brand. You can't keep insulting a game and its developers and then expect them to support you.

that's bad enough as it is. if the guy is 1/5 of the scene there simply wasn't a good way of not supporting him, he is too popular to ignore, that's how the influence game works. 🤷‍♂️

Nah. Read it another way .. what's the one thing that's better than a hype train?

Exceeding expectations. Rather than start with highly expensive marketing speak and allowing Yammiks to shoot it down to steal the narrative off you, kick him into action first then steal his! (The content will do the talking in the end but everyone loves the underdog).

could be! we will see soon enough! :) but all this popcorn has already brought is some joy in the meantime!

Again, what actual consequence? Yammik complaining and whining and insulting FD? You saying FD is dumb? Us moving from one to the new 100+ page topic about nothing?

How is this different from any other Monday?

It's perfectly logical decision making and it happens all the time within the industry. Publishers pick and chose which influencers they want to support and drop them pretty quickly if they go toxic or "off-brand". It doesn't matter how many followers they have.

  • how many free aplha keys were distributed?
  • what is Frontiers internal policy for distributing free keys?
  • who else got free keys?

Frontier is under no obligation to provide this info. An assumption is being made that all the independent self-made nice guy game reviewers got free keys sent to them, and Yamiks was given the cold shoulder. Maybe this is true, dunno.

My point is that (from my perspective) it's not about him being critical, but about the way he does it.
To use another example - if there was a content creator who would make sexist jokes and used racial slur, I don't think anyone would be surprised if he would have been denied free alpha access.
I believe it's the same thing in this case - by giving him something, they might be seen as condoning that kind of content (faul language, vulgar jokes, etc). And they are family friendly company after all.

And to be honest, I'm expecting that it can be seen from the footage if EDO looks bad.
People will be live streaming for endless hours until full launch. If it sucks everyone will just see it no matter what. This is not like cp2077 which is kept under a blanket until the full launch.

Yammiks will just have to wait with the rest of us peasants and do his little dance for his base when the mainstream attention has passed. Oh noes.

Yeah, I've said a couple of times now that this entirely about Yamiks for me more about FD's decision making, but as we're here...

He has a style that stands out from others be that agreeable with you or not but underneath that I believe he clearly loves this game. He wasn't a bloke who just picked a game at random and thought, 'I'll start making craptalk videos about them'. He has some good insights on the game, has had some good ideas. For me, I don't like the way he dresses them, or rather, I cant stomach them for too long. I suspect he'll play until such a time the game is not there to play.

public embarrassment. of course interpretations might vary wildly. if you don't think this is embarrassing then you don't need to convince me, i think it is.

again, not the end of the world and i don't think this will cost them any sales (i expect oddysey to perform rather poorly independently of their social media strategy, though).
