Griefers make open impossible, and how easy the solution is.

I mean in-game though. I don't think the names give it away as easily. At least not the English ones.

I was just joking, oft repeated US president joke that "Don't they speak Latin in Latin America?". But not quite, Linnunrata means Milky Way in Finnish, so...

I was considering Finnish, but then thought it sounds more Swedish. I'd need more samples to identify.

Yeah, I suppose it was somewhat of a hyperbole, just an anecdotal tendency I've been observing.

Maybe someone could do some research on this, but I'm pretty certain that the probability of running into a ganker is far higher during European prime time than during Australian prime time when paired with geographically close CMDRs.

Seeing as this thread got "respawned" I'll just add my usual opinion that I love open mode, just the way it is. I play using unarmed buckyball racers and unarmed traders, make loads of friends and hardly ever get shot at by any of them.

I just accept that the game's main mode is open, and that it's for both pve and pvp, that's why it's called open mode. I accept that if someone wanted to attack me in open, then I've chosen to give them the chance. I've never been attacked someplace that I didn't expect the possibility.

If I want to go to some obvious hotspot, and I'm not in the mood for pvp encounters, then it's simple to switch to a PG.

The thing is - for me at least - the NPCs offer no threat whatsoever. It's very rare that they successfully interdict me, even in my lumbering T9, and even if they do I'm unlikely to be destroyed on the first successful interdiction. So I can just low wake, dodge the follow-up interdiction and the NPC is gone.

So the tiny chance of being pvped away from a hotspot system is the only threat that I face.

Ironically my only armed ship is my PVE FdL which I use at BH CGs, I normally switch to solo for those in order to get the RES to myself.

The risk of actually getting killed and losing my ship is part of what makes the game exciting. Even then, getting destroyed isn't nearly as harsh as it is in something like Eve for instance. Space is dangerous and is all the better because of it.

Well, even so I have a different way to make friends, I dont shoot at those!
We could be from close neighborhood, namewise ;) ;)

I don't find it exciting to lose a sizeable portion of a play session progress to some grind master with a meta ship. I find it to be a waste of time.

Usually, in a non mortal fight, the only winner is the one which looses, he had the chance to learn something, the winner didn't.
He doesn't need to and is free to kick his chance, but hey, ;) he can!

If all you care about is hard grinding, why bother with open at all? It's not like you're there for interaction.
Combat is not the only interaction that is possible in Open. Met many excellent CMDRs in Open who were up for a chat or cooperative play.

Heck, I wish griefers and gankers would extend their interaction beyond pew pew pew. When I'm in Open and get interdicted by one of these, I always try comms, never get a response, so just go for a cup of coffee while they are enjoying the PvP challenge of shooting a stationary T-6.

edit: The trick to being ungriefable is only go into Open when you don't care whether your ship gets destroyed.

Pretty much - or assess risks that you are willing to take when going to Open. I'm okay with any of my ships getting destroyed, but I'm not going to stake three weeks of exploration data or three hours of mining.

(Though I'm a bit opposed of using griefing as a synonym of ganking).

I guess ship-naming might have contributed to easier localisation of players?
Ship naming, CMDR names, language spoken. Plenty of hints to go by.

Also, sometimes if you join someone else's instance who is running the game in a language other than English, certain key words (such as Alliance Enforcer) are translated accordingly. First time I ran into these "Allianz" ships I feared they were trying to sell me insurance.

And I've got to say, Bigmaec's post a couple of pages back was spot on:)

Oh yes, very much agreed. My main point is, if you're only goal is to farm mats or ltds (whatever really), as the guy I had quoted initially said, you're not really looking for interaction. Combat or otherwise. It's the reason I gind in solo usually. I play in open when I feel like meeting other players, being fully aware that I might get my ass kicked. I recently also learned that you should also go to Jefferson Memorial in solo..

Spot on, I take issue with any 'non consensual' combat being branded as griefing.
