Has the lore been abandoned or just changed?

The reason I ask this is because I was on Drew Wager's Twitter and he appears to be rather upset and somewhat disgruntled with Frontier. From what I understand he basically said The lore has been abandoned. It also seems he no longer plays anymore.

Has Fdev largely abandoned the original storyline or have they maybe decided they want to take it in a slightly different direction from Drew's ideas? Lore us one of the best parts of the game IMO.

Wait, there's lore? Is this DLC?

Yes, the lore has had zero bearing on the game since it's start. If the Lore was implemented in the game, you would not have King Admirals and the game would have a lot more real depth.

Elite has fallen foul of the modern scourge of gaming.

This is nothing new, Drew's books and guides have been consistent based on things as far back as the original Elite games. The devs have made changes, obviously to further the story line for Elite dangerous, they where bound to go their separate ways at some point. No idea what happened behind closed doors, doesn't seem like the parting was amicable.

Also, I want to clarify. I did not mean this to be one of those "Elite is dying" threads. I apologize if it sounded that way. I just enjoy a little bit of story and mystery.

Got a link? I just see the usual low level grousing you get after a parting of the ways.

I hope FD have diverged from the books - I have nothing against the books but having the self-righteous around here proclaim "that is incorrect, I read it in a book" ins't great gameplay, IMHO

This is from a year ago

Frontier are curating the new lore exclusively in house and you must look to them for a definitive history of the revised Elite: Dangerous universe. It is Frontier’s story after all. Personally I would love to see a ‘lore’ guide.

As a result I have archived my definitive guide series as they are now inaccurate and confusing to players looking to understand the background of the Elite: Dangerous universe. If I’m in a position to state some accurate lore in the future, I’ll edit them all and put them back.

Some strange things have been going on lore-wise since then as well. We’ve learnt that the primary ending to Frontier: First Encounters (FFE) didn’t happen in the ED time-line.

This was announced via a twitch stream.

With some ships never having existed, planet descriptions being different between the various games and no definitive time-line available, there currently is no ‘lore’ outside of Frontier’s own documentation, which only they have, or GalNet itself, which only goes back to 3300, when ED started.

Quite what is happening is a bit of a mystery. I have taken down my lore articles as a result as I no longer have any idea what is ‘true’ from the perspective of ED. This isn’t to be awkward or sniffy, I’ll happily put them back (after editing) if I know what the ‘truth’ is. It’s just a failsafe to ensure folks don’t assume stuff based on what I was calling a ‘definitive’ guide.

Let’s wait and see what happens. It is Frontier’s story at the end of the day.

B continued 2

I blogged a few days ago about he ‘elephant in the room’. As provenance would have it I received some news shortly afterwards which has made that blog post a bit moot.

Unfortunately I can’t reveal it, nor can I give any real timescale. But things are on the move once more…

Indulge us a little more CMDRs. It will be worth the wait. Hopefully I’ll be able to restore my lore documents (edited for accuracy) as well.

All I know is he no longer plays elite, doesn't write story's about Elite anymore, and apparently deleted his account.

I've seen plenty of that it many games and don't care for it either. For me, what my character experiences in game is their reality, regardless of external storytime. Assuming the books are an extension of the game, something like LotR I suppose there is a definite canon.

I think videogame players tend to take lore & canon far more seriously than the people ordained to create it (maybe with the exception of Wagar?), and confuse a Studio's desire to expand a franchise and make some money with an actual commitment to a cohesive and consistent world.

Everything thing I know about Elite's universe I've learned in game or on these forums, and I like it that way.

The whole formidine rift thing was probably my favorite part of the game.

I picked up Elite in late 2015, played it for a couple of hours, then promptly forgot about it for another 18 months or so. It was only after seeing one of the Children of Raxxla streams that I was encouraged to take a second look. I thought it was really interesting that the game was not only accommodating player group stories, but seemed to be actively responding to them. Of course, FDev haven't exactly run with the potential there, unfortunately.

I don't see anything on Wagar's twitter stream that involves griping. The only (quite reasonable) frustrations of his that I could find were on his blog, and concern the Salome event.

I could be wrong here but I always thought that Michael was one of the main architects of the games lore and when he left so did any motivation on Frontiers part to carry on with his work.
