How big is our VR Community

Didn't find confirmed information anywhere. So I hereby ask the devs: How big is the VR-Community in Elite Dangerous? Are you able to track that information? Just curious.

If not, I would like to see a poll or a possibilty to have a checkbox "VR-User" in the users profiles. I would like to know whether or not the VR thing is growing in ED.

No information out in the wild unfortunately, just conjecture.

There was an informal poll on one of the YouTuber things, but I can’t remember the figures (something like a quarter of respondents were VR users?) and there was a Steam top-ten-most-played VR thing a couple of months ago with ED high up near the top - with a bit of cross-referencing the VR only titles above and below it showed that something like 500 to 800 Steam players were using VR at that moment.

Star Wars: Squadrons have just revealed 15% of its players are using VR, but that includes PSVR - however it might be safe to assume spaceflight / flight sim games attract more VR players than the usual “only 1.5% of Steam users are in VR” suggests.

Whatever the actual figure is, it was enough for FDev to rethink its “no VR at launch” for Odyssey 🙂

Well, us VR users got, somewhat justifiably I daresay, a tad noisy when the initial no-VR plans were announced for Odyssey. Some of us bought into VR largely (or even solely) due to Elite Dangerous so it was a bit of a slap in the face to have it dropped. The Odyssey support is still not great, but at least we won't have to exit the game to switch modes anymore, so kudos to FDev for listening to and continuing to cater for a probably quite minor, group.

Unfortunately it does seem as though whoever used to be in charge of VR has moved on or hasn't had a major say when new features are being developed for quite a long time now. For example "new" things like the FSS being a case in point. Yes, it works in VR, but no, it's not nearly as nicely integrated as the earlier work.

Still, happy for continued VR support, and ever hopeful that one day it'll get polished back up to its old glory. As well as hoping for an actual semi-decent headset at some point. Compared to monitors, the resolution and colours are still pretty atrocious!

I play in VR occasionally, though just sold my OG Vive and waiting on a Reverb G2 once that gets here I think I'll finally do some proper combat, I'm still only competent at that

Seasonal VR player here. I started a couple of years ago, but it gets too hot during the summer to wear the headset. Oculus Rift has been my only headset so far, although I am thinking about getting one with better resolution. Some day.

Started with the HTC Vive, moved to the Valve Index this summer, I play Elite almost exclusively in VR (unless I do screenshots, or I play local coop with a new pilot so I can see his screen)

Still the best game in VR for me (ok, I am a sucker for space games)

...
I'm a 80/20 player, playing 80% of the time in VR, the other 20% (FSS-focused exploration) on a monitor.
100% player (bought VR because of this game), but yea, FSS...
Okay in smaller systems but I jumped into a 60+ bodies system and tons of non human signals. Not too bad (ignoring the NHS), until you get a big <rear part redacted> gas giant blatting across your field of view with blinding white rings - they can be painful in VR!

@OP; I have a feeling the community is going to grow big - recieved my Quest2 yesterday and seriously, the optics are better than on my Index (slight but noticeable), and with the Link cable... I mean, I hate Facebook but they might've just brought VR to critical mass.

I started Elite in 2014. 2017 I bought a Vive. A strap broke in 2017 and I was forced to play in 2D again. That was almost painful. in 2018 I upgraded to Vive pro. Huge step regarding resolution. Never want to play this in 2D again. It feels like it is meant to be played in VR.

Anyway, I'd really like to have a statement from the devs, if the have figures of the size of the VR playerbase in ED. 15% VR players on Star Wars is fine, but has little to do with ED.

(probably not that far off given the amount of copies sold (3.5 million as of May 2020), though obviously some people have brought multiple copies of the game so even that's not any kind of guide.)

Okay, that means we have roughly 100,000 VR users in Elite.
My guess is, that number might double in about a year, considering that the demand of VR headsets is on a row, while all headsets are almost sold out everywhere. Corona and Alyx sure had to do with that. Well, we'll see. When MS Flight Simulator 2020 rolls out their VR support, there will be another peak in VR demand. Not to mention if Star Citizen rolls out their VR support, that had been promised on stretchgoal 3/2016 cough.

Same here in the summer time I find it far too hot to play in VR. But as the weather cools I am always using it. Vive Pro headset here, was looking to upgrade to the valve one, but with Odyssey not supporting VR there wasn't much point in buying it as Elite is the main game I play in VR.

Oh, I think the releas of the RTX 3070 and 3080 will be also a big boost for the vr community. More or less affordable and absolutely able to deliver the pixels.

I have a GTX 1080 with a Vive pro. Works fine, but was quite expensive, whenI got it. I would love to test a HP revrerb G2 with a RTX 3080. Could be whole new level of quality.

2D is buried along side Tomy's 'Attack In Space'. Except maybe X4 Founda#£$%£$... nope, I can't - it just sucks. I tried so hard to get into X4 but 2D is just awful.

The only exception to VR being my one attempt at VorpX+Alien Isolation...
