It wouldn't surprise me to discover that a great many of those no longer playing or playing far less, are, like me, primarily offline players. It's quite galling to see endless updates and tweaks for online play, when the actual core content of the game is still threadbare, even now. There are still glaring flaws in the basic mission structure and faction standing, something that should have been ironed out long ago.
It's clear that the FD have an agenda to persue on line game play, or pew, pew. Hence we see the latest news on console support. Sorry, I have no interest in that. I tried online combat flight simming, but the time zone differences, coupled with the management of an appointment diary killed it.
The core content is apparently there in skeletal form. Like it's been an unfinished project. How long has this game been in beta? How many beta testers have pointed out the flaws and omissions? Factions, military alliances, civil wars are mostly smoke and mirrors. Missions are basic padding, some work, some are hopeless.
For myself, an 80's Elite player, I bought ED for nostalgia really. I have no interest in "fighting" real humans in space, there's enough of that on earth. Additionally, it tends to attract less mature players who just enjoy being a hoodlum. I do not mind fighting aliens and imaginary AI space pirates. It's what we did in the original. There is nothing anti-social about being killed by a Thargoid swarm however, being set upon by a gang of gleeful pew, pew, shooters is something I would rather not do. But as has been said, it takes all sorts.
I still enjoy the game, but after this latest update, I am not anticipating any greater depth or satisfaction for the solo player. Would that it were offline, perhaps a more complete game could have emerged. I still recall that black box with a cassette/ floppy disk, instruction manual and The Dark Wheel, a C64 and a plastic joystick that kept getting "unsuckered" every time that mother ship looked into view
