Sure, if I wanted to die while trying to land on a high gravity planet.Just use the smallest D rated shield module you can fit, and engineer for low power and stripped down.
well, you could also care both about the range and about shields. i want to find a nice balance. I wonder if there is a 3rd party tool that can calculate all of this stuff. There are loads of options here, and I just don't know which one to pick. 0e shield boosters with low power enhanced? reinforced with no boosters? 4d or 5a? etcPick a goal:
Either you want the highest range possible, in which case fit the smallest shield you can (or none at all), or you want to be able to land anywhere, in which case don't worry about the range.
Squeezing the last fraction of an LY outta your loadout isn't going to make ANY difference in 99.99999% of the galaxy anyway.
have you tried 0e shield boosters? they're weaker but i think if you fit two of them you get same mass for more shields. there are so many options, it drives me crazyI've landed this way on some of the highest gravity planets known, but you do have to be careful, and use the right technique.
I also have explorer ships with guns and full Shields (I took a Krait like that on DW2). If you want more shields, get a bigger D module, and some D rated shield boosters. But then you start to need bigger power plants etc.. And if you actually do battle (say at a far away station system just for kicks), an exploring vessel will still be a disappointment.
I guess one reason for me to have small shields when exploring is to fight boredom, to have some thrill when landing. And also to develop and min max the exploring build and skill.

Any tips on how to squeeze the most MJs out of the shields on an exploration ship?
As said, try Coriolis for build making. But eventually the best thing I did was to engineer a couple of different builds, with only one or two things different and experiment with landing (there's a high G planet in the bubble, Achenar system), and scooping. Was fun to do also..
I landed on Ander's Strong G in an Anaconda with 3D shields low power 5 stripped down no shield boost and 5D thrusters clean 1 and stripped down, and it was a feather soft landing, and I'm a noob. You'll live if you do it right.Sure, if I wanted to die while trying to land on a high gravity planet.
