If I could only fly one ship, it would be the . . .

Well, in Frontier you could only have one ship at a time and for me that always was the AspX.

In ED however, I suppose I'd stick to the ship I like most right now, which is the Chieftain. ^^

Objectively I would say the best all rounder by far that I have flown is the anaconda due to its absurd potential jump range and ability to do everything fairly well Inc SLF bay.

However (despite not owning one outside of beta yet) IF I could only have one I think it would be a krait. Has SLF bay, has fair trading ability, decent combat ability and it's jump range is not awful...

My main issue with the conda has nothing to do with its ability but in VR it has a restricted canopy. Whilst I love that oil tanker captain feeling - esp when docking - if it was my only ship I would want a more open canopy.

This and your description there is absolutely spot on - even after some rationalisation of my fleet I have over 20 ships on my main, from an 800m/s+ Imperial Eagle to a 1.5 billion fully engineered Cutter and in anything other than one of my Pythons, I feel like I'm borrowing it.

For me, the ship that "feels like home" is probably (unfortunately) the AspX.
Which is probably kind of like saying that my favorite car is a Toyota Corolla or Nissan Primera.

The AspX was about the only ship I flew for two years and at one point I had something like 16(!) of them, all built for different roles.
These days I only have two (a wildcat miner and a mat' scavver) but when I fly them I still find it's the one ship I can always manoeuvre with perfect precision.

One of the reasons I prefer the K2 to the Python is probably that it handles a lot like the AspX.

Anaconda, hands down. I've spent countless hours at the helm of the Thunderchild exploring the far reaches of Elite's galaxy. So many expeditions, including Distant Worlds 2, Distant Stars and the Galactic Nebula Expedition. The most exciting moments and profound memories I've had of Elite happened with that ship. I'd give up the rest of my fleet and my carrier too before I let her go.

The Asp would probably be my second choice and recently I've been flying it a lot on my nooby Epic alt, mainly because I'm determined to not just go with the path of least resistance on it with more Pythons. It's an amazing ship, especially for the price, can do virtually everything especially after making sure that my very first engineering on the account was a G5 FSD range mod giving it around 50 LY in a ship with incredible utility.

The Toyota Corolla is a great analogy by the way but yeah, there's a reason they sold so many and the same's true of the Asp - you'll never be far from a sreenshot of an Asp in front of something.

Underappreciated beauty.

That is true.
BUT the courier is way more flexible in it's fittings while still maintain a good speed profile. Fast viper can't do anything else as as soon as you start making it combat ready the courier overtakes it in that role.
The courier is just silly in what it can do and do well... outside of mass hauling/trading. I used to love mining in mine for time to time.

Yes and no. Its a bit of a puzzle, but my 'PvE patrol Viper' after making a 1t jump still has a 860m/s boost. Which isn't too shabby I guess... :)

Probably a Krait MkII - could be configured for:

  • General purpose combat-capable Mission Runner with decent shields / weapons plus collector limpets and SRV
  • Trading / Cargo Missions close to Python level
  • Combat close to Cheiftan level
  • Exploration close to Phantom level

Currently I have a couple set up to cover the first two roles but use Chieftan and Phantom for combat and exploration / long-range mats gathering. Both of which would be more than tolerable in a MkII instead.

Only thing I would miss would be the feeling of invincibility sitting in a HazRES or CZ in my Corvette.

Nice build!

Courier is still a lot more lenient with engineering requirements and still get max speed out of it with a varied setup with it's silly low hull mass.

Any of the really fast smalls struggle in that regard though. Which probably why I'll stick with the Keelback :D
