Newcomer / Intro If you think the game will get easier later, think again. I really think I'm done with it:(

Game forums ... game forums never change.

Oh; I do get you sir.

I've been a gamer since the 1980's and, even pre-internet, there were Doom BBS's that would quickly become, shall we say, "a hotbed of unpleasantness"..........

Seriously guys - IMHO I'm sure this thread is a wind up.

OP in other threads flips between rapture on progress (recent CG, able to afford 'Conda - don't know what happened to it), and rage over being killed.

I just don't get it. The game progresses. As you "git gud" so do your enemies. Would OP prefer that NPCs remain the same as he progresses, thereby turning the "game" into fish in a barrel shooting?

There is no way on Earth (or indeed in the Galaxy) that OP is not fully aware of all countermeasures for interdiction evasion and escape procedures. Mainly because OP is vocal on all the threads where it is discussed.

What is this....therapy?

Apologies AdamDZ if I am misjudging you......but I do find your posting subjects a bit schizophrenic tbh...

Reading the first post again he was mugged in his Python, which is probably a better fit out than his one week old Anaconda, by a wing of 4 gets into cruise with hull damage, at least, and no or next to no shields then before anything is sorted in terms of systems repair he is interdicted by a master Anaconda, not a soft touch in a ship with shields working.

So with no shields left and a damaged Python how would you fancy your chances of surviving the 15 or more seconds until you can wake or jump?

OP here...

No offense taken.

You're absolutely right that I was excited about the game and then suddenly flipped. I understand how you get the impression. I did get lucky with the CGs and I was able to afford an Anaconda.

Let's go back for a bit though.

I was originally upset with the interdictions but I learned how to avoid them. One of the measures was to avoid missions. I was hauling Rares then got into CGs. I actually got pretty good at avoiding interdictions. I was not destroyed in over two weeks.

But, here is the problem: missions are an integral part of the game. You can't avoid them forever. You earn rep and get rare materials as rewards. So I wanted to get back to running missions until the next CG. I left the Anaconda parked because its somewhat of a pain for running short missions. It's slow to turn and hard to dock. So I bought a Python. I know that Python is not a fighter. I meant for it to be well armored and armed cargo ship. I was hoping that with it's relatively decent maneuverability and 6A shields with two boosters I should be able to run away from trouble. I KNOW HOW TO AVOID INTERDICTIONS. I've been interdicted regularly even by superior AI and I was able to escape or even destroy them. I made it to the top 25% in the bounty hunting CG. I'm no a totally helpless idiot.

So I went back to running missions. ONE AT A TIME.

This happened on the third mission. The problem is that this attack was disproportionally overwhelming and fast compared to others. I've never seen anything like this in 300+ hours of playing. The NPCs appeared and instantly opened fire. My shields went down while I was retracting the scoop BUT I MANAGED TO GET AWAY. I survived the attack. Although es as hell, but I survived. This was a very upsetting event (and I still hope this was a bug) but I was going to continue flying. My intentions were to return to my station and get the Anaconda back.

I should have probably jumped out of the system right away, but I took few seconds to cool off and collect my thoughts. My shields were still down and my hull was at something like 60%. And then I get interdicted by an Anaconda, my hull starts taking more damage, my drives went offline. I knew I was going to be destroyed. I was like "You've got to be kidding me" and reset the computer.

This is where I flipped.

THAT is the problem. I had zero chances of survival. This was not a fight, this was an execution.

I want to have combat difficulty settings in this game because not everybody is equally good at combat. I want the game to be survivable, I don't believe in games that give you no options to survive. I play games for fun not for challenge. I want games to be entertainment not chores. I don't want to be executed by AI while I'm already in pretty bad shape. Despite everything that was said I insist that this is a broken game mechanics and/or I experienced a bug.

I should not be attacked by AIs that take my shields down in 2 seconds.
I should not be interdicted by AI if I just narrowly escaped destruction and my shields are down and hull at half integrity. The game should give me a break.
Yes, I do expect games to be fair. This is entertainment, not the Army. If some of you play this game for the challenge or to prove your worth, it's fine. I don't. I just want to have fun.
I paid for entertainment not for masochistic experience.

If FD Support admits that this was a bug, I may come back.
If they say this is normal game mechanics, I'll uninstall the game and never look back.

That's an issue for you perception but I ain't complaining.

There are no complaints from me. I bought the game and I decide to play it. If I change my mind I will not play it.

I am getting a bit over the irrational and unreasonable amount of complaining that goes on; all that indicates is a misplaced sense of entitlement. (I am not talking about the OP or this thread. Just take a look at these forums generally).

People need to read a description of the game and should, at some stage in their lives, sit down and read the Terms and Conditions of the EULA. That is basically where entitlement begins and ends.

I do not believe I'm irrational. One of the game slogans is "Play Your Way". The description mentions trading, exploration AND combat. I know you're not talking directly about my complaining and I'm far from feeling entitled to anything. I'm just voicing my preference and disappointment with the game's focus on combat and with excessive and overwhelming interdictions.

You have misread my post above. Allow me to reiterate:

I am getting a bit over the irrational and unreasonable amount of complaining that goes on; all that indicates is a misplaced sense of entitlement. (I am not talking about the OP or this thread. Just take a look at these forums generally).

So; are we looking at the forums generally? A lot of the complaints on these boards are just that: irrational rubbish.

I have made comments on these boards before about the game mechanics and balance but, ultimately, I've decided it's fun for me to play.

I am playing the game my way. I'm sorry it's no fun for you but, if you feel that way, by all means don't play.

Best wishes.

I am very highly doubtful that this mission is bugged. It's got Michael Brookes fingerprints all over it. I don't know if you've been here long enough to remember a very similar mission. You dropped into an unidentified signal source and there was a massive pile of gold just floating in space waiting for you to swipe it... It's a trap!

The first time I came across it, the ambush party got me good. I just sat there looking at my rebuy screen laughing my head off.

It is still possible to avoid combat in Elite at the moment, which is what I'm doing. I ditched the guns in my Asp to get me a few LY's more jump range.

It is annoying when the only way to get certain Engineers components is by a certain type of gameplay. But I couldn't say for certain if increasing the number of ways to get those components would improve the game. You can follow your own path, but if all the paths lead to the same place then what's the point? If you don't do combat missions then you don't get combat enhancements.

Even if you feel the need to stop just now, I hope you keep sticking you head around the door. The update that's happening soon isn't going to be the last, and there may be something that appeals to you later down the line.

If I were you I wouldn't uninstall the game, just leave it for a few months or so.

Sounds like ED may not be the type of game that suits you.
It's hard for me to imagine you would have "difficulty" settings in a sandbox game.
Don't you think one makes the other impossible?

Also, the other problem I can see is that you may be taking this whole gaming thing... too seriously (sorry if it's not, but that's the impression I got from your words).
If you fail, do something else, entertain yourself other way (I can recommend outdoor activities) and come back day/week later without the burden of "this game irritates me".

[Edit]
OP - I read your guide, I think it's very helpful not only for new players alike, so I hope you will stick to the game, despite currently being upset with it :)

Fair enough; I stand corrected.
Don't worry about not High waking - you could equally well have been interdicted by the same 'Conda at the other end.
Just a thought. Were you in an Anarchy system by any chance?

But the thing is: in a way the game has a difficulty setting in the way you play it. If you want it easier stay in high security systems and enable "report crimes against me". If you want it hard, you can go to anarchy systems with a cargo hold full of gold.

I was flying for a while in an Asp Exp armed only with mines, survived many interdictions.

.

Exactly. This directly contradicts the game's slogan "Play Your Way". You can play your way, but you won't have access to many resources if you do. So if I can't run missions, I won't get certain materials and I won't be able to get certain upgrades. Some materials are only available through mining and prospecting and I have no interest in those. At least I should be able to buy things like sulphur and nickel in some mining outposts.

I was scooping and scanning for for many hours. I had over 500 materials and data in my cargo and only two were usable for engineers. I almost gave up on Engineers. So I decided to run some missions.

This has been discussed many times already. "Play your way" doesn't mean "Experience everything the game offers by only doing things that you like"

It's a game. A piece of code. Basically "if A then B, else C"
If you don't like certain part of the game, by all means, avoid it. But if you choose a goal (freely) the you have to follow paths that lead to that goal. And those are not free, because they have to be coded into the game.

You won't get osmium by scanning high-wakes around stations, and you won't find a piece of software while mining and asteroid. Everything has to have its place.

It's the same problem as with your OP.
The NPC is free to interdict you whenever they like. They may choose not to, but they are free to choose. That makes sense. It is unfair. But sensible.
What doesn't make sense, on the other hand, is if NPC was FORBIDDEN to interdict you if your shields are down.

pre-2.1 the same was true with distress signals. Jumped-in to help a stranded NPC, but then immediately got ambushed by 4 (maybe more) NPCs and destroyed in seconds. So the second time I tried (masochistic I know) at least I was knew what to expect . Although this time I was already prepared to jump out which is what I did and lived to tell the tale. So learnt my lesson and moved on to try something else.

Support said that after looking at the log the AI behaved as designed. AI is aggressive by design. No bugs. Well, that sucks then.

They said that some combat re-balance may come with 2.2 and that they're opened to suggestions in the dev forum. I may give it a shot then when 2.2 comes out if I'm not playing anything else by then.

So cheers all and thanks for all the feedback.

Signing off.

Definitely DO give them your feedback. I suspect you care about Elite enough to want to help in making it better for everybody.

Yeah. My first distress call was in a Asp set up for long range mining in a system out past Maia. I hadn't heard anything about distress calls, so the ambush was a surprise.
Occasionally the AI feels a tad overaggressive, but when the Thargoids make a comeback we will look back on these days as the godd times.

If they'll be forced by community to nerf the Thargoids, I will be seriously.... very grumpy for a very long time.

It the Thargoids turn up every five minutes, players might have a point about nerfing them. If you need to have elite rank, a lvl5 upgraded Corvette and go to Thor's Eye to find a Thargoid mothership, they should be truely formidable.

Yes it all depends on where they start, if the baby ships (sorry forgot the name) can insta kill stations with one shot then some judicious nerfing will probably be needed. On the gripping hand if it takes a wing of mother ships to take down a lone E rated unmodified Hauler then they probably need to be ferned (the reverse of nerfing I thought everybody knew that).
