In-game ads / commercials

I was looking at the in-game ads / commercials / whatchamacallits. Thing is, while I think those type of ads at freeways etc IRL are rather annoying, I actually like them in the game. Since they are only in or around space stations, I think they add to the "civilized area" feeling.

But reading "Zorgon Peterson" doesn't really tell me anything. In fact, I have no idea what the name is of the manufacturer of my Sidewinder, although I guess Zorgon Peterson would be a good guess? If you look at contemporary ads, they are rarely just a piece of text and/or logo; it's a picture of the product or a movie even. Surely, this should be available in future advertising as well? Something to connect the name with a product.

The other thing I thought about was that I don't really think a company like Coca Cola will disappear off the market. I can see Mercedes Benz or Audi or Chrysler disappearing, because cars are a product that are likely to be replaced in the future. But how do you replace a taste? The taste of Coca Cola will always be the taste of Coca Cola, no matter what the future brings. Sure, they may invent new flavors and new ways of stimulating our brains, and maybe even food replicators, but I still imagine people going up to a food replicator and asking for a glass of Coca Cola, or Dr Pepper, or whatever else in terms of taste that isn't really replaceable.

Therefore, I think it would be reasonable to compile a list of products that are likely to be available in the future. Then, I actually wouldn't mind having FD open up to actual advertisements by currently active companies. There are already many companies investing in e-sports (Dota 2, League of Legends, CS:GO, StarCraft II, etc), where they target viewers but not in-game.

Maybe some people think it would just be annoying? But personally, I honestly think it would contribute to the in-game atmosphere, where you get to a space station and you feel like you are back in civilization.

Of course, some limitations should apply. For example, I don't think a communist station would have ads / commercials, if they have implemented a plan economy. Also, federation and imperial systems might differ in their advertisement because they have different ideals and standards.

I hate the idea of real adverts in the game. I do everything I can to get away from adverts - there a menace. I don't want to play a game that indorses the likes of Coca-Cola!

I have no problem with pretend adverts though. Perhaps moving adverts - like the adverts in Blade Runner? That would be good!

I wouldn't have a great issue with real adds appearing in the docking run in where the fake ones currently are or say inside a station.

I would obviously massively object to when say hyperspacing to a different system an add popped up on screen saying "this hyperspace is brought to you in conjunction with Pepsi, mmm savour the taste". That would be very very very bad indeed.

I'd like to see advertising done properly, E.G. wealthy station/planets with minimal to none, and some of the poorer/commercial stations or planets saturated. (Bladerunner-esque)

I also think no more than 30% of advertising should be actual, the rest in game related, so as not to ruin the environment..

Also be fun to have some regular forum competitions for game advertisements.

Real life adverts in a fictional game world are tacky. Always have been, always will be. They make the developer look bad in my eyes, like either their game wasn't good enough to succeed on it's own without ad subsidies propping it up, or like the game is really a side-show to the advertising.

There's a good reason why, when you visit the local inn during a game of Skyrim, the innkeeper doesn't try and sell you bottles of Budweiser. What is any different about this game?

Besides, the company have already been paid for the initial game development and infrastructure costs as far as I am concerned. If they wanted more money they should have added the amount to the Kickstarter total way back when.

They can get profits from all the new sales they will make once the full game is released, together with the vanity item store, merchandise, and appropriately-priced expansion modules.

Anything that gives money to FD that is not P2W is fine by me. In game advertising and vanity microtransactions are perfectly acceptable as they exclude no one from the game and allow FD to have a revenue stream to maintain the game and provide upkeep for the servers.

This model is much better than a subscription that would exclude people from the game such as those that cannot afford a subscription and those without the means to pay a subscription such as the very young and those without the correct payment method.

Strange how bad ads are perceived ingame while they bother less in movies.

As long as it's not in-your-face ads, carefully crafted to mix well within the game, I'm all for it. Blade Runner was quoted few posts ago: it's the perfect example of product placement done well (a contrario I Robot is cheesy for example).

Brands also have an interest to "play the game", even if they have to scratch their image a little bit to fit.

FDEV will have to manage themselves which brands are allowed or not in the Elite Universe, that they respect the specs of ads or product placement. I assume I clearly dislike Star Citizen's marketing strategy, but I admit I find the AMD ship a very smart and non-invasive good move.

For now though, there are no plans for ingame ads. That part of the Eula is standard for all FDEV games, and none of them have this kind of monetization technique. ;)

Eh, the poll doesn't belong to the original post... I made the poll, it was designed for an entirely different post, which got merged into this thread by mods because it's on the same topic, but the poll doesn't fit the OP... All leading to a bit of misunderstandings I think.

Although, I do get the impression that most people (who have voted) seem to be all for ads, as long as they fit into the game (voting "maybe, depending on how it's done"). I think that's a pretty good signal to send to the dev's, from my point of view. :D

Lets just hope we can keep American way off thinking out out of this game.
We Europeans have over the years been enstranged more an more to the America society.
Dont ask me for qoutes , look them up yourselves.
this is a game and dont have to bow to commercial interests, keep it that way please.

Cheers Cmdr's

It's always nice to hear from the closed minded. America isn't the only country on the planet that advertises you know. Also, where do you think the majority of Americans came from.

Not really, since most films are set in and around the present day, in a world that is recognisably our own (albeit one that has somehow never heard of cultural phenomena like zombies, superheroes, vampires, or any of the films or TV shows that the cast have also been in). I doubt very much if anyone from Leesti in the year 3300 would have ever heard of T-Mobile, the Geico lizard or a Snickers bar. They've probably never even heard of Slurm, and that's only 2 centuries old!

mmmm...slurm!

I want to see real ad's, for exactly the same reason I want to see *lots* of vanity items for sale: anything which keeps enough cash coming in to prevent the need for a monthly subscription is fine by me.

Obviously, ad's should be futuristic, and preferably tongue in cheek. "Coke -300th anniversary edition" or "Burger Emperor", for example.

I would love that type of future in joking but I don't think the advertisers would want it that way.
