In-game ads / commercials
I was looking at the in-game ads / commercials / whatchamacallits. Thing is, while I think those type of ads at freeways etc IRL are rather annoying, I actually like them in the game. Since they are only in or around space stations, I think they add to the "civilized area" feeling.
But reading "Zorgon Peterson" doesn't really tell me anything. In fact, I have no idea what the name is of the manufacturer of my Sidewinder, although I guess Zorgon Peterson would be a good guess? If you look at contemporary ads, they are rarely just a piece of text and/or logo; it's a picture of the product or a movie even. Surely, this should be available in future advertising as well? Something to connect the name with a product.
The other thing I thought about was that I don't really think a company like Coca Cola will disappear off the market. I can see Mercedes Benz or Audi or Chrysler disappearing, because cars are a product that are likely to be replaced in the future. But how do you replace a taste? The taste of Coca Cola will always be the taste of Coca Cola, no matter what the future brings. Sure, they may invent new flavors and new ways of stimulating our brains, and maybe even food replicators, but I still imagine people going up to a food replicator and asking for a glass of Coca Cola, or Dr Pepper, or whatever else in terms of taste that isn't really replaceable.
Therefore, I think it would be reasonable to compile a list of products that are likely to be available in the future. Then, I actually wouldn't mind having FD open up to actual advertisements by currently active companies. There are already many companies investing in e-sports (Dota 2, League of Legends, CS:GO, StarCraft II, etc), where they target viewers but not in-game.
Maybe some people think it would just be annoying? But personally, I honestly think it would contribute to the in-game atmosphere, where you get to a space station and you feel like you are back in civilization.
Of course, some limitations should apply. For example, I don't think a communist station would have ads / commercials, if they have implemented a plan economy. Also, federation and imperial systems might differ in their advertisement because they have different ideals and standards.
