Is Chapter 4 "make it or break it" for you?

No, I will do what I have always done with any game played over a period of years, and take breaks for a while. Frankly, there is something wrong with folks who play 6, 7, 8 even 12 hours a day, day after day, month after month.

yeah, those folks got bit by the hamster, and are playing the BGS... :D

No, I'm not a fan of ultimatums. I mean if they completely butcher the game with the Q4 update, I probably won't stick around, but there's no reason to believe that.

That being said, I do expect quite a lot from Q4 (or the ominous premium content). If the development pace stays the way we have seen in 2018 so far, I probably won't keep playing for much longer.

In order to begin butchering you first have to raise the cutlery?

Looking forward to the changes Q4 will bring, never been a fan of exploration in the game. Its to basic imo.

The thought of having a few things to interact with out there would make me reconsider though. So heres hoping.

Im still playing regularly but if Q4 changes are not for me i can imagine my play time will go down until maybe the paid content, depending on what that is.

No make or break for me really,my play time will just vary depending on weather im big into the new updates or not.

All in all, after 3 years of playing ED on 2 platforms I'm really bored with the whole corporate secrecy thing surrounding potential updates to the game. It's working to cause disappointment for us as players and little else.

How many times have we read comments from on high announcing "Something the players are going to be excited about..." only to be left 7 months into the beyond update and basic gameplay mechanics changed very little from when Horizons dropped 2 years ago?

If FDev actually communicated with their player base and read or paid more than lip service to the forums and media outlets instead of merely guessing what we find 'exciting'...we might actually get somewhere.

In my limited experience, what the shareholders find exciting or deciding game mechanics at a boardroom level rather than listening to your paying customers is heading towards disappointment for everyone involved. Just ask BT how they managed to have zero customers on our small island after refusing to supply a decent internet service due to 'costs'... turns out a very small company running some TV white noise tech offering 4 times BT speeds managed to oust BT completely from the island in less than 3 months.

I get more information from the electricity board on what they're planning than FDev offer up generating this persistent and childish hype for nothing but false hope.

I remember when, this was all space fields.... ;)

This. It's one thing to offer the excuse of Frontier being an "immature organisation" for the initial period...lending insight to bad decision making and somewhat mind boggling design decisions. But years after the fact, with little effort put into righting those mistakes, "childish" is exactly the right word for it.

Chances to gain experience in Service by Design have been cast aside it seems, resulting in FD learning exactly nothing about provisioning in over four years. It's almost as if this has been done on purpose...

I'm afraid the notion of Elite Dangerous being a vehicle upon which to Kickstart Frontier Developments, rather than kickstarting the Elite Institution has been lent further weight with the inadequacies of the Beyond Project thus far.

This may be why communications are so restricted.

There's little to actually communicate.

I thought the idea of "Beyond" was to focus on tidying/fixing the core-gameplay and fleshing it out and then just giving us some new toys, as well, to keep us happy.

The gap between the reality the developer lives, and the (at times puritanical) ideals of the community is not the same. Frontier can't ever win, won't ever manage to deliver. Because they are being asked the impossible. And every time they try, they are told they suck. Me? I'd have told the community to get a ****ing grip a long time ago. But they haven't.

They've just gone quiet, against a cacophony of noise; pumping out content as best they can, in the endearing if not frustrating and esoteric way they do. I have gained an enormous respect for Sandy of late. He's trying to deliver the impossible and still does that, most every day. Frontier's struggle has always been taking disparate ideals, and ideas; then creating a unified delivery to a very broad set of players. And they want to try and make people happy so end up chasing ambulances perhaps more than they should.

But I think there is a genuine lack of recognition of just how much work it is. This is not an easy genre to build a platform in. It won't ever be due to the scale and complexity. So many have tried. And failed.

C&P cannot do what people want; because it's being warped into a religious crusade; and like any crusade many must fall and be sacrificed for the greater good. Where does it end?

The two most recent ships are, for the first time in a long time, not overtly compromised. Module fit seems consistent as is the performance and capabilities. The team has clearly learned a huge amount over the last year or so and I can see the development ship turning. It's just not going to turn fast. They will have a development lead time of at least 6-9 months for almost anything and that necessarily can't just change overnight.

I have more hope for Q4 from a QoL perspective than anything else. I hope I can build a ship and sod off out into the dark and avoid the stupidity being demanded for C&P. Of which Frontier will try and do anyway because they are good people who have a hard time saying "no".

Frontier is, however, saddled with some very angry people who just want the world to burn. Nothing is too much of a cost. I'd not want to talk to them, either? But, perhaps the reason is less that Frontier don't want to talk; it's that if you are constantly shouting and loud, you'll never hear anything. They are talking at times; people are too busy having a vent to notice.

And lord, if there is just not a whole lot of shouting and venting at this point. I'd just like to see some of the QoL stuff they have mentioned. If it happens? Yay. I don't care about really anything else at this point. I don't give a crap about people's agenda or STOP THE CRIMS and all that?

I just would like a game I can log into, and be able to smile again. To be content and just play the game. That's it. Nothing else matters now. Nothing. If Frontier can help me smile again, post Q4? Job done.

I hope you get heard, and not just have this post get swept aside in the rush to take a shot at an amazing development team. I have my fingers crossed.

With the ratio of features that are related to exploration, mining vs the actual content we got.

Plus the radio silence on what to expect in the future. (atmo, spacelegs, etc)

Has taken care of my excitement for this game.

========================================
I wanna go explore?: i play skyrim, subnautica, astroneer.
I wanna feel like a pilot?: i play DCS.
I want space combat?: x-wing alliance.
I want a good spacegame?: X3.

Waiting for new content...

Powerplay Overhaul is the make or break line for me. I doubt mining or exploration updates will thrill me longer than some weeks. Powerplay Overhaul done well might glue me to the game for a considerably longer time.

People expect different things in life, that rule also apply in games.
Some want multiplayer content, others want more single player content.

I'm in the last group BTW, however there are no ultimatums from me, right now I'm just chilling out and not playing the game, for one mayor reason. I simply dislike travelling around by micro managing the star jumps, they make me go crazy.

Nope, it won't break the game for me if this update won't be awesome. But I will be disappointed. Exploration is one of the parts I really want to enjoy but there is, for me, not enough interaction beside honk and scoop. So I hope they do a good job here.
But overall I still like elite. It has some big flaws, yes. But I played the old elite on the c64 and now I have my old beloved game with great graphics, cool sound and even more stuff than in the old game.
Yes, more or more fleshed out ideas would be great but hey... I can fly in space with cool ship. So I am more or less happy. And if I get bored to much I take a break and play something else.

Well it seems to me that FDev have been given a green light to release yet another buggy, half baked content package as most of you seem to be saying you are fine with ED being as it is, and that Q4 won't matter too much.

So don't say I didn't warn you.

I was just thinking about this OP. I've decided to "never say never" when it comes to the game itself, especially in light of No Man's Sky NEXT, which shows any game can come back from a really bad spell. That said, if Q4 is a bust, then that's when I'll probably quit the forums (if I haven't already), because it will be proof that none of my time spent here was worth it - be it general discussions, focused feedback, or filling out bug reports.

amen to that.

I highly doubt the success or failure of Q4 depends on the content of this thread.
