Is Chapter 4 "make it or break it" for you?

I disagree really. Release date is not important as long as it's in some reasonably near future.

"Hey guys, yeah, the premium content for LEP holders will be released in 2025. Cheers".

What?

See, I don't mind waiting either (although my patience runs very thin). It's more not knowing at all that's the issue for me.

I agree. I meant "In 2018 we will have this smaller content, and 2019 we will have this premium DLC in this quoter" type of information.

As for patience...I just want to know how it will be done from now on as there won't be next Horizons. That's all.

That's fine.

The problem is, we were told that 2018 was going to be a "gap year" so they could sort out the core gameplay.
We're now half way through the "gap year" and it's starting to look like they might not achieve their stated goals for this year - even if they have given us a few "baubles" to distract us.

I was always under the impression it was the first and last bits of Beyond that were hefty, and that the middle ones were the shiny. Q4 is looking so far to be the biggest out of the lot (unless it slips).

What makes you to say that? Curious. I personally didn't expect premium content in 2018 till Zac announcement after FX 2017.

Yeah.

Those are my thoughts too...I was under the impression they were gonna sort the core gameplay and the long standing bugs.

And yet here we are 7 months on with next to nothing done in that regard. It would be easy to think what they told us last October was just another spam excuse to buy more time...only now that time is running out and what exactly have they done about the core gameplay and the bugs?

If it doesnt appear in Q4 then the excuses wont make any difference to me cos I wont stay to listen to them this time...they used excuses last year because funnily enough, we were having these exact same discussions last year about long standing bugs, complete lack of meaningful communication etc etc...

Some things change but really, nothing changes in the big picture. If they achieve greatness with Q4 then Ill be singing their praises, but if it doesnt deliver then my first thought might be that they lied to us last year...otherwise why have they not done what they said they would do? As theres another thread asking the question, Ill not expand too much, but fer me, that is the deadline...there is nothing beyond Q4 if doesnt live upto expectations. Thats just about the only thing that will save this beast now because I would never believe another word they said...once bitten twice shy as we say round these parts ^

You'd be surprised if a massive addition, for which there is zero evidence, doesnt come unannounced in a few months?

I hope for you gamescon is an overwhelming success...

See, it depends on the definition of "atmospheric planets". I am not expecting to see planets with diverse biospheres just yet. Still might be nice though to see harsh planets with relatively limited atmosphere & very basic weather effects. The fact they can now create such effects in space (as they showed at Lavecon) strongly hints at the ability to now produce very basic atmospheric effects for planets with very limited atmospheres (either in terms of density and/or composition).

NPC comms and extending web of contacts towards black market, etc.

It is easy to forget that not all improvements need to be that sexy as atmospherics.

Yep, I agree. The ability to communicate with NPC's-even in a limited fashion-would open up so much of the game. The ability to negotiate with hostiles, make demands of traders, bribe local security, obtain missions, get clues abouf the location of mission targets.......that kind of thing. That would make the galaxy feel so much more alive.

To be honest I am pretty much done now, waiting to see what "the rest of chapter 3 brings" but not holding my breath.

Thing is, I'm a lazy SOB and so I can usually spot the hallmarks of another lazy SOB at work.
So far, this year looks like somebody's doing the bare-minimum required to keep people happy while putting off what they actually said they were going to do until the last minute.

Damning words indeed.

Anyway, I've given FDev four years and a couple of thousand hours to make their case, and it's not looking very convincing at this point.

Whilst I hunker down during the content-drought waiting for the 'magical cure-all' promises of the Q4 update to be realised, I'll spend a hundred hours seeing what Hello Games have accomplished in half the time on half the budget.

It will make or break whether I invest further money in to ED.

I mean I bought the game so I will probably always play from time to time, but if the Q4 update proofs to be a huge disappointment, I'm probably going to invest even less time into ED and skip on any paid content or paintjobs.

No
Still waiting for atmo landing, gas giant scooping, water world diving and big game hunting.
A couple of acretion disks would be cool too.

For me, I don't know that a chapter 4 flop would get me to quit playing all together, but it'll definitely define how much time and energy I'll spend playing in the future.

Just give more ships plz.

That is all.

IMHO you can expect a new SRV type (or two through to the end of the year).

I think it's a no brainer really, there's a gap there, they can probably fill it reasonably easily, likely won't require much code changes to implement (depending how what the SRV role is).

Maybe a mining SRV Q4, possibly a more combat focused one Q3?

Personally I would like a hover SRV please, roaming planets makes me want to throw with all the bounce. Make this SRV a lot faster. The current SRV is so slow, or even give me an SLF/SRV hybrid. :)

Thinking about it, that might help spice up surface prospecting on the occasions it's needed. +1 for it.

I'm not sure how that reply relates to what I wrote.

I didn't mention "premium content" at all.
In fact, I wouldn't have been surprised or disappointed if there was absolutely nothing "new" this year, except related to the core-gameplay improvements that were the stated goal of this year's updates.

The "big feature" of 3.0 was C&P, which is/was a dumpster fire. That was an attempt to update core-gameplay which turned out to be as much use as a chocolate teapot.
We also got the Chieftain and the new Guardian sites which are nice "baubles"

3.1 offered no "big feature" but gave us the Challenger and the Krait (more baubles) and only (partially) fixed issues introduced with 3.0, such as the bugged Guardian modules and galmap CTDs.

3.2 is, apparently, going to be something similar to 3.1 and then 3.3 is going to be when we get updates to mining and exploration and Squadrons is also going to be in there somewhere too.

Taken as a whole, it seemed like this year would provide a few nice new toys and still give the dev's plenty of time to work on the core-gameplay issues.
Now, however, we're 7 months into the year and we haven't really seen any improvements to core-gameplay and there's still the mining and exploration updates, and Squadrons, to roll out.
That wouldn't seem to leave a lot of spare time to work on core-gameplay updates.

I'd have been a lot more confident in FDev achieving their stated goal for Beyond if we'd seen specific long-standing issues fixed with each update.
As it is, it seems like they're leaving it all to the "last moment" (the 3.3 update) and I guess we're just supposed to trust that they're deliver.
