Is Chapter 4 "make it or break it" for you?

As someone who plays primarily PvE combat by myself or with a tiny private group of 1-2 friends, chapter 4 is not even relevant to "make it or break it" for any of us.

• Exploration update will not change that
• Mining update will not change that
• Squadrons - my group doesn't even have enough people to fill a single wing, so I can't see how this will be anything but a minor QoL update for us

Thanks for all the replies so far. I'm actually glad that it's a "no" for so many of you :) Truth be told, if it's REALLY bad, it probably won't be a "beak it" for me, but rather an incentive for a very very long break - I'm thinking a year or two....

This echoes my feelings, but one issue that I've long felt is unhelpful is the 'FDev defence league' that populates (quite understandably) this forum, whereby many quite reasonable concerns, when voiced, get shouted down no matter their merits.

You get mad about something and voice it and a certain portion of the community hates your guts from now on, how dare you have the audacity to not like any one thing ED related, etc...

I love ED, but there are bugs in it that go unfixed.

But it would take a lot more than that to make me quit.

I also play infrequently.

Like last night stuck ED on for a bit, trying to engineer a Krait on a 2nd CMDR to shoot some Thargoids. I like having stuff to do/achieve in game, that bit is good.

But what is it I'm doing, I need arsenic, so I'm on Shinrata A1 driving around, for around 40 mins, no arsenic. And I'm frustrated after the first 10 mins.

It's essentially find rocks on the most boring non-varying terrain possible, in a vehicle that often has difficulty with the terrain you're trying to traverse. Shoot said rock, bits fly out, then I have to drive back and forth over them while being annoyed at the remains of the rock outcrop that tries to prevent me driving back and forth, it's not good. NMS resource gathering is hugely polished by comparison.

So roll on Q4, no it's not make or break or anything, I'll always be dipping back in to check stuff out. But if the update ends up lackluster and not engaging for very long, then inevitably I'll end up playing other stuff. And if I'm not playing ED then I'm not gonna be making purchases am I.

The trouble is, people don't know when to stop. These forums now are full of people who sit about and moan- its like me shopping in Sainsburys, and then going to Tesco and shouting in peoples faces how bad Tesco is, over and over. There is a suggestions box, and I assume FD monitor numbers of players. If people have gripes they should make decent and coherent suggestions, and then simply move on if they find ED tedious.

FD are not stupid, if the numbers drop then they know they need to do something. Conversely players who hate / dislike a game should stop complaining and simply stop coming to the place that causes them so much pain.

Modern gaming now seems to involve 20% game time, and 80% telling people how bad everything is.

Regards the OP, no, it won't break it for me. I play the bits I like in ED and don't bother with the things I dislike. Q4 sounds what NMS Next is, and I look forward to it.

99% of my 1000+ hours in ED, 99% of it in VR have been bliss, but I gripe about the 1% I wish were better like it is the end of the world, which is human nature, but a poor excuse. I love ED.

About the above mentioned passenger runs, I still do them for far less credits, because I figure in 3300 or whenever there will be holo screens, or whatever, so I like to do this on long, hands off missions:

Not breaking anything for me, i am really enjoying the game. I am sure big things will come for the coming years so the way is clear ;)
Hope to see NPC crews and NPC comms ( a winner for me) one day though ;) + extended missions (more and more variety) + passengers.
Looking for Q4 and premium DLC as well.

IF Q4 for ED turns out to be just as significant an improvement as NEXT seems to be for NMS, then it's reception here will be just as positive as it currently is there.
I just don't see that it will have the same major impact with regard to changes in the game and/or returning players.
And i'd really like for you to be right and me to be wrong here.

I think we've generally underestimated how having so few planet types to land on affects the whole feel and experience of playing the game. My guess is that changes to the way all planets look plus the addition of atmospheric ones will go a long way to improving the game. That's not to say we don't need other improvements but I get the impression that the coming changes and additions will go a good way to change how the game looks, feels and plays. As always though, the proof of the pudding is in the eating....

As much as I love ED the realization that most every mission feels the same to me, and every system feels the same to me, etc, sucks.

The only reason for me to explore is if I see a unique ship, or station, or whatever in a forum and want to go see it.

Once you have done a bunch of everything in the game, it all feels like wash/rinse/repeat, to me anyway.

I waon't quit if Q4 is the same as all the others, one nice thing added, many things nerfed or broken/bugged then remain that way.

But dang, I hope they add something awesome, and fix some things.

We're still at Sainsbury's and complain about the service and product quality. Why would I go to Hello Games forums and complain about ED there?

Exploration is my main chosen past time in elite. I'm looking forward to not having to create the content in my head and be able to explore and discover the galaxy in a whole new way.
Although if development ended today I would still continue to play ED.

If something is fun I play it, otherwise I dont. I dont do make or break moments, its arbitrary waffling.

Yes. Been waiting 2 and a bit years for a substantial exploration update. If this aint it, I aint waitin' no more.

So if they release 4.0 two months later and its the best thing ever in gaming, you wouldnt bother with it?

Lol just because he'd have stopped with the game, doesn't mean he'll stop playing the forums :D

I'm calling straw man on that I'm afraid...

Have you considered that a lot of updates are simply criticised because of flat out questionable design? ie: Development time and effort poured into shallow questionable bolt ons, that could have alternatively been invested in mechanics and gameplay that could have moved the game forwards?

As I've mentioned a number of times recently, the current Thargoid Invasion highlights this issue. With years to get their ducks in a row and develop mechanics that the Thargoid Invasion could then leverage to make it a dynamic and interesting affair for CMDRs, FD instead threw development time at things like CQC, Multicrew, Generation Ships, Engineers V1 & V2, Megaship "gameplay" etc.

We're now not only left with a game too much of which is shallow, but a Thargoid Invasion with so few mechanics to leverage that for most CMDRs there's little/no reason to engage with it.

I made a post over a year ago how I felt FD's lack of investment in more involved mechanics/gameplay was causing the game more and more issues. I think it's still just as applicable today - https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showt...is-now-coming-back-to-bite-ED-in-the-boosters!

We can only hope Q4 finally shows FD willing to development mechanics befitting a space game in 2018... Note: I still cannot fathom how space games I played from floppy discs twenty+ years ago demonstrated combat scenarios with more depth than a four year old space game in 2018... But there's been time for CQC, Multicrew, Generation Ships, Engineers V1 & V2, Megaship "gameplay" etc.

Elite used to be my main game. Then came the engineers. I stopped and played something else, frustrated by the mountain (grind?) I had to climb. I came back and embraced the engineers (still haven't unlocked Palin and Jameson). Now I play Elite when I fancy it. I don't see Q3 or Q4 changing my approach to the game, now that I've found my pace with it. Currently working on the backlog.

Nah
It’ll be when they announce what their big plans are post Beyond.
If it’s atmospheric planets or space legs then I’m all in.
If their big plans are just more slight improvements then I’m out.
