Is Chapter 4 "make it or break it" for you?

Well it seems to me that FDev have been given a green light to release yet another buggy, half baked content package as most of you seem to be saying you are fine with ED being as it is, and that Q4 won't matter too much.

So don't say I didn't warn you.

You're assuming they release chapter 4 in Q4. I can see it slipping based on Frontier's track record.

I think FD is well aware that they have to nail the Q4 update and the premium one for the long term longevity of the game.

I think its a 50/50. I don't care that much anymore TBH.

As far as I'm concerned, my lep is well amortized and I had a good time.

But I would sure be happy to return exploring if worth my time.

The mining changes they showed are a good sign IMHO, if they add that much depth to exploration as well, they are golden by my book.

Mine too : I could double the money I invested in the game and it would still be a steal in terms of playtime. But these guys are building the universe I've been waiting for since I was a kid : I really want the game to grow beyond additional ships and decals :(

Yep, no matter what happens with Q4, I could walk away from the game right now & feel like I easily got my money's worth. That said, it would be fantastic to see the game live up to its true full potential. Which primarily means, for me, massive improvements to mining, exploration, missions & persistence.

This. I am really, really want to see Q4 more than any premium DLC reveal right now. First, expanding two core gameplay loops is huge. And all information sounds good about them.

I've been taking a break since 2.3, after having Elite as virtually the only game I played for two years. I tried to get back into it with each update, but never stayed for more than a few weeks. I have a lot of hope for Chapter 4 and I want it to grab me and get me to the swing of things again, but if it won't, I'll just wait some more. :)

One of my biggest worries about the Q4 update is game balance. Frontier has a habit of implementing new features with terrible balance issues. See how the engineers went live, or see how ice mining has been horribly unprofitable ever since it was first implemented years ago, or see how pathetic the income is from salvaging, or see how bad killing Thargoids still pays, and so on and so on. Even when Frontier does a good job with mechanics, they historically fail at balancing risk vs reward or just making actions in the game rewarding.

If the new mining stuff pays like crap then most people won't bother with it. If ice mining is still the worst paying aspect of the game after 3.3 then miners still won't bother visiting ice rings. If the new exploration mechanics and content is just for sightseeing then again many people won't waste their time on it. Frontier needs to not only develop fun mechanics for Q4, they also need to make them compelling from a rewards point of view, something they often blunder with.

Well I loiter here,as I lost heart logging in a while back.
Sometimes I criticize sometimes I praise but, my balanced opinion this time.
I expect the next thing to be a paintob frenzy. You'll get a new ship or 2. Then skins released at a steady pace, so you buy them all followed a custom kit, so you buy that then the raider kit. The must have one.
See the threads about ohhh whats in the store now, cool Ill buy that. FD know what they are doing. They know only too well. Make a MVP and sell skins.
Actually I dislike FDev now. They are dishonest money grabbers who when they want to say something its all "Exciting" "Coming" or "Soon". They have no interest in ED aside from its microtransaction potential. I think after it's 4 year run so far and what a mess we have now proves that.
I won't buy another thing off of them anymore, even a new paid content. It follows a pattern MVP.
As for the main title of the post, I don't think chapter 4 is the make or break. I think I'm already broken.

Yes, it will be make or break for me.
The changes being brought in need to make a big difference to mining, exploration, and generally flying out there in the black.
I'll be going along with DW2 and I'll be deciding what to do when I get back from it.
If I enjoy the changes, I'll probably hang around.
If I don't enjoy the changes, then I'll probably be flying out to some random point in the galaxy, saying "Thank you for the last 4.5 years" and uninstalling.

I've already disengaged from a lot of community interactions. I only check the forums maybe once a week, and I keep within the same 3-4 Discord servers. My attachment to ED is already being reduced.
Hope for the best.
Plan for the worst.

Not sure that's a problem, considering rewards are something very easy to tune if required. Features to be engaging are more important.

I'm far more pessimistic in that regard. True, payouts should be easy to tune.

But FD has always (i.e. even in gamma !) been bad at it. *VERY* bad. Four years in and mining payouts are ridiculous, missions rewards do not make any sense. As for trading, only a handful of commodities are worth ferrying. And the big baddies, yeah, Thargoids kills barely cover expanses. Meanwhile, the usual £££ exploit of the week is all over youtube.

Activities will never pay amounts "exploits" dishes out. FD follows their own tables for that. Whatever they are enough or not really depends on your ship build, play style, etc. Not an easy thing to balance and personally I don't believe it is that huge of deal.

I agree they are relatively easy to tune, yet ice mining profitability has not been improved upon since the first day it went live. Frontier all too often leaves the low hanging fruit on the tree rather than improving the easy issues. If Q4 goes live unbalanced then it will likely remain unbalanced for a very, very long time.

A Beluga is nothing more than a city or tour bus taking a bunch of low paying passengers to 7 different locations, netting third world wages for children in sweat shops.

They are adding 2-3 times more grind to mining by making 2-3 different more ways to mine, but lets see if the pay increases.

I expect many folks will be mainly disappointed once again.

And there will undoubtedly be missions broken and numerous bugs introduced as with every update.

The main thing we can look forward to without a doubt, bugs.

I am just hoping for a cool ship or two.

I have learned that the only thing to count on though are bugs, broken missions, and nerfs.

When you go deep mining and the roids break up, and having to avoid the pieces and dodge between them to get your materials that would add some excitement.

But it all depends how it will flesh out.
