Newcomer / Intro My Return to ED ......

Ooooh! I seemed to have fixed it. :giggle:
I've set the 'Mouse x-axis' to 'Roll' and the 'Mouse y axis' to 'Pitch'.
That means I don't turn left and right; I first Roll and then Pitch up or down.
In fact, that's what a joystick does. You roll left and right and pitch up and down. You don't "turn left and right". Embarrassing ....... how stupid can I get .........:sneaky:
Even when you have turn (AKA Yaw) bound to something using Roll and Pitch is quicker in Elite as for various reasons the ships are designed so that Yaw is the slowest in degrees per second.

Yes. Thanks.
I realize now my muddling around with ship movement was not as stupid as I thought. ED ships have so many options when wishing to 'turn', Pitch and Roll just being a mutual pair of them. They will be sufficient for my discovery mode of play, however for those heavily engaged in a Combat Mode, most insufficient.

I've had a difficult decision to make. Now that I've re-achieved my basic flight skills.
Do I return to my original Sidewinder, held in Solo Mode with all its goodies from when I was playing ED a couple of years ago; or do I delete it, and carry on with my current "beginners" Sidewinder with no goodies, not even an auto-landing module?
As I have only one account I can't have both, or don't think I can.
Besides, my souped-up Sidewinder is out in some far-off galaxy, I don't understand how or what most of the additional goodies are used for, where I bought them, how I earned sufficient credits to pay for them, etc.
So it's probably better if I start again with my new "beginners" Sidewinder and just forget about the souped-up one. Even if I was able to keep both.

One commander in the game can have many ships. But you can only have one commander per paid account. Some people do pay for more than one account (new email address), so they can have one commander exploring the depths and another back in the bubble doing combat, community goals, power play etc. It has crossed my mind to pay for a second account so I can have a go at being a ruthless pirate and assassin - something which is not in Quain's character.
Remember no commander or ship is "held" in Solo Mode. Each time you play you choose whether the session will be Solo, Open or even a private group where a group play together but exclude other human players.
If you continue with your existing commander you will pick up from that location with the "souped-up" Sidewinder, or you could buy another.
When I first came back to Elite May this year (having last played Elite on the ZX Spectrum in 1984 when I was 14), I played a short while to figure things out and then reset my commander and started from the beginning again.
If you use the starting Sidewinder to go out to a nearby Low (risk) Resource Extraction Site in a planets asteroid belt, look for system authority ships shooting at pirates, target a pirate, wait for the authority ships to take down its shield and reduce the hull to 20%, then open fire and get the kill - you get the bounty. Do this for two 20 minute sessions (cash in some bounties at the station after first 20 mins) you should have around 600,000 credits and you can get the Hauler. The other non-combat option is, look at the mission board for Data Courier / sensitive Data Delivery missions. If you can find several going to the same place, accept them all - you can take a maximum of 20 missions at once. Be postman for 2 to 3 hours and you should have the approx 600,000 you need for the Hauler.

Yes. I sometimes want to go round 'shooting everything', but it doesn't last thank goodness.

I'd only do this as a last resort. "Getting the Kill" is totally against all my principles. In fact, sorry, I won't do it.

THAT"S BETTER!!!!! I will only behave here, the way I really feel in reality!!!

BLOODY HELL !!!!
I've just deleted all my history from any of my previous experiences. That is I've elected to start again.
I got taken to a panel that had a 'START' button on it. Thinking this would take me to the Main Menu,
I clicked on it ..................... ONLY TO FIND it took me to an evaluation setup for me to be assessed for my Federation License !!!! 😮 🤯🥵😳😰😱

Ah! ......... stuff it! Why not, give it a try!
And ........ And ........... AND .......................................... ANNNNNNNND!!!
I PASSED!!!!!!
And I didn't even have my proper glasses on!
It was quite comprehensive, as all you licensed CMDRS would know.
I was amazed how much I new, not ignoring the helpful clues they were giving me, I new most of it anyway.
Except for the "Something Assist". I struggled with that as I hadn't seen that before. But that was the only thing.
So now it's Commander Wombat1940.
No .......... no need to salute ........ just address me as "Sir Wombat". ;)

Thanks Quain, crib, RJay. It's been a huge lift for me. A real confidence builder. ;)
Now to complete that first mission I've been set. I assume it's in Solo Mode ........ ?

You can choose whether you want to play any missions in Solo or Open. I play in Solo most of the time and only go open if I want to interact with others. I went to rescue refugees from a burning space station a while back with passenger cabins in the Anaconda in open and enjoyed the interaction with other Federal Corvette and Anaconda commanders doing the same. I also just about survived a "ganker" hitting my Anaconda with at least a couple of torpedoes engineered with cascade feedback effect which instantly takes down your shields. I only survived due to lots of engineering on hull and module reinforcement packages fitted. 52% hull left.
Just play Solo until you want to interact with other explorers in the depths of space where no one aggressive can possibly find you.

As an aside, the traditional Elite Dangerous salute between commanders is o7 because of this:

WOW! Your initial generosity could have cost you!

Ha! Just love it!!!!

Here's the latest. I seemed to have brought with me some extra credits, so spent a few. :p

I can't believe how far I've progressed in the last couple of hours. I'm now a licensed pilot and have completed my first mission collecting 10 000 credits. The big surprise there (I was making a delivery) was that I was able to use 'auto docking'. Does that mean I'm automatically fitted with the auto docking module? How do I check? Thanks.

Yes, your new sidewinder comes with an autodock and supercruise assist module. Tiny find them in the right-hand panel under 'modules', can change their settings under 'ship' and remove them in the outfitting screen under 'optional modules'.

Thank Ian. Don't remember anything like that when I was here a couple of years ago, but that might just be my bad memory again.
But I'm sure the pilot licensing is new. I couldn't have forgotten that ! It's a really nice touch. (y)

As a rule, ships built for exploration are not typically given any kind of docking computer by their commanders. You hardly ever dock and you generally need the internal slot for some other purpose. Supercruise assist on an exploration ship is a matter of personal taste - it's an auto pilot of sorts that will automatically drop you out of supercruise at the destination if engaged, or if the destination is a star or planet, put you into orbit around it. I like to have it. It is also supposed to automatically bring you to a halt in supercruise (hyperspace dethrottle) when you jump and arrive at a new system. This is broken in the game - not working - right now - no dethrottle so you keep going. I crashed out of supercruise before hitting a star a good few times before my habits were reprogrammed to pull up on arrival.
When I plan an ASP X exploration ship build, I find I've run out of available slots to fit supercruise assist, but I do have space to put it in a Krait Phantom - one of the reasons I prefer the Phantom as my exploration ship.

With EDO the advanced docking computer will land on planet surfaces.

I'm still on Horizons - not that bothered about getting out of my ship if I don't have the option of seeing the journey up the steps and to the pilot seat. Looks like Odyssey gives you a lot more reasons to land on planets, so much like I do have a docking computer on ships that will dock often to save time as I'm lazy, auto land on planet surfaces could become valuable for much the same reason.

Well.... In Elite Dangerous even exploration is dangerous.
Remember I said earlier I thought if your ship was destroyed you would pay the rebuy/insurance (a bit more than 1.8 million credits for my Krait Phantom) and then get "respawned" on a nearby Fleet Carrier?
I did land on the Fleet Carrier in question before entering a hazardous area first - some people here will know "The Word of Death" which is deadly to ships when the planet get's to a certain region of its orbit, but SRVs can survive. So you dismiss your ship back into space to keep it safe. Trouble is, I could not keep an eye on the fuel level in the SRV which goes down even if it is just sitting there for a couple of hours waiting for the planet to move into the area that makes for amazing time lapse videos. So the SRV ran out of fuel, then oxygen, then it went boom. Then my ship was automatically summoned to the surface of The World of Death at the SRV wreckage location at completely the wrong point in its orbit to be at all healthy for ships... Boom!
Rebuy screen, then there I am on that Fleet Carrier.
I was prepared for this outcome, so no tears are shed and I have more than enough credits to not notice the loss. I also captured the whole sequence on video, but I know Wombat1940 wants to discover things of this nature for himself, so I've been deliberately a little vague here and won't share the video.
