Newcomer / Intro My Return to ED ......

As a rule, ships built for exploration are not typically given any kind of docking computer by their commanders. You hardly ever dock and you generally need the internal slot for some other purpose.
"Hardly ever dock". Amazing. Docking computer I would have thought essential. Not that I can't manually land: I can. But it's so much easier doing it with auto.
Supercruise assist on an exploration ship is a matter of personal taste - it's an auto pilot of sorts that will automatically drop you out of supercruise at the destination if engaged, or if the destination is a star or planet, put you into orbit around it. I like to have it. It is also supposed to automatically bring you to a halt in supercruise (hyperspace dethrottle) when you jump and arrive at a new system.
Again I would see the SC Assist as essential. I can do it manually, but would prefer not to.
This is broken in the game - not working - right now - no dethrottle so you keep going. I crashed out of supercruise before hitting a star a good few times before my habits were reprogrammed to pull up on arrival.
Broken? 😯 Is this something I need to be aware of?
When I plan an ASP X exploration ship build, I find I've run out of available slots to fit supercruise assist, but I do have space to put it in a Krait Phantom - one of the reasons I prefer the Phantom as my exploration ship.

I'm still on Horizons - not that bothered about getting out of my ship if I don't have the option of seeing the journey up the steps and to the pilot seat. Looks like Odyssey gives you a lot more reasons to land on planets, so much like I do have a docking computer on ships that will dock often to save time as I'm lazy, auto land on planet surfaces could become valuable for much the same reason.
I don't wish to land on many planets, hence I have little interest in Odyssey.

Well.... In Elite Dangerous even exploration is dangerous.
Remember I said earlier I thought if your ship was destroyed you would pay the rebuy/insurance (a bit more than 1.8 million credits for my Krait Phantom) and then get "respawned" on a nearby Fleet Carrier?
Yes, I do remember.
I did land on the Fleet Carrier in question before entering a hazardous area first - some people here will know "The Word of Death" which is deadly to ships when the planet get's to a certain region of its orbit, but SRVs can survive. So you dismiss your ship back into space to keep it safe. Trouble is, I could not keep an eye on the fuel level in the SRV which goes down even if it is just sitting there for a couple of hours waiting for the planet to move into the area that makes for amazing time lapse videos. So the SRV ran out of fuel, then oxygen, then it went boom. Then my ship was automatically summoned to the surface of The World of Death at the SRV wreckage location at completely the wrong point in its orbit to be at all healthy for ships... Boom!
WOW! Interesting ...... 😱
Rebuy screen, then there I am on that Fleet Carrier.
I was prepared for this outcome, so no tears are shed and I have more than enough credits to not notice the loss. I also captured the whole sequence on video, but I know Wombat1940 wants to discover things of this nature for himself, so I've been deliberately a little vague here and won't share the video.
Thanks Quain. But I think "why not make an exception this time?" Sound to good to miss ........ 😯

And what happens on a planet is something I'm NOT trying to avoid. It's galaxy maps and galaxy details I'm trying to avoid seeing.

And ....... how do I get one of these? :p

Inara is absolutely indispensable if you want to start collecting materials and using engineers to improve ship modules and weapons.
You tell it the engineering blueprints you want to get done e.g. light weight modification to sensors where reduced ship weight increases jump range. Then it tells you what materials you need in addition to what you already have. It's almost too complex to track on spreadsheets. You'd only put time in on engineering for ship modules you want to keep long term. You can move modules between ships if they are the right size for the ship.
It also provides some of the features that eddb.io does for finding nearest places to buy ships and modules you want plus profitable market trading routes.

You need to sign up to Inara.......
.......then you can set up a signature and all the settings that come with it.
Ah yes! I'm already a member. Thanks for the reminder. (y)

I set up the signature. How do I get it to transfer to my posts ? Thanks.
On Inara it should give you a BB link to your signature image.
Copy it, then go into your settings here, and click on signature.

Here's mine....

Just copy your own BBCode to your signature on here.

Looks like I have to copy and paste it each time ........ :(

Nope.

Go to your account on here and click signature.....

Then copy the BB code into the box......

Preview it to make sure it works, then save it.
It should then appear automatically after each post you make.

Actually, that's not my save signature. It's my previously saved signature. The new signature does have two images (see below) as did the previous one:

Looks like you only have one image in your signature here at the forum, although over at Inara your signature shows two images......

Well, I've managed to get it to show the original signature on all of my posts (see below by way of example). It also has two images but is not rejected at the Forum. It looks as though it is just the new signature that is the problem. In fact, Inara won't accept it as an update for the original signature. Maybe that's the problem.

I've even tried to update the signature to where everything in the 'Signature Settings' was set to 'Default'. Inara will a least save it, but won't update the signature over the original signature. The original signature is locked in as being the only signature at Inara and refuses to be updated even though the signature image you see is new, the signature BBCODE remains unchanged and produces the original signature at the forum. (See in my next post).
