General / Off-Topic New movie based FD game in development... guess the franchise!

First they will finish 2.4 and PS4 release. After that Elite will have only the most hardest things to implement. And it will not be like before (3-4 mounths per update). I don't even think it will be for one year. I am pretty sure that the next part of Elite development will cost to us about 1,3 year. Game is already close to the point of HARD development (just look at the Star Citizen progress). Not even full team can make this time less. So basicly 2.4 is a complete game. We will not see anything new for about year. Only rebalance at best.

What i am trying to say is.. it will be more than 1 year development. There is no point to stick on this. It is better for FD to also focus on something different. Also they need some expirience to make FPS in ED playeble.

The only positive spin I can think to put on this - regarding Elite's future development - is if the new Hollywood franchise game is something very similar to Elite in scope and tech required to develop. Like if it is a new space game similar to Elite but based on a franchise. Star Trek could honestly be a good symbiotic fit alongside Elite, from a video game development frame of reference. I don't think it is Star Trek though, it's too big and expensive a franchise. I think it will be something smaller, but something still well known and respected. Apparently around the world too.

Frontier would have had to take all of this into consideration...

You know, my earlier guess might be right, it just might be Firefly game. Although that might be TOO similar to Elite....

Well.. Firefly is pretty much dead. You can't call it "enduring". It is dead. And never will be alive. Also Firefly never was a "movie franchise of global renown"

About money.. You guys are really underestimated FD.

Firefly is very far from dead. I mean yeah the series itself is very dead but the merchandise, comics, and fans are still a very alive thing to this day.

But you are right, they said movie franchise, so it ain't Firefly.

Star Trek honestly seems to fit the bill the best to me, surprisingly enough.

I am going with Jurassic park

Lets look at it from a studio. They will want someone seen as a safe pair of hands. Frontier with planet coaster and there earlier tycoon type games are probably the world leaders in such games.

A dinosaur park game compliments planet coaster. it does not compete against it.

Planet coaster is selling very well its natural to assume a dinosaur game would also be very popular.

I also recall some of the devs saying on a Planet Coaster livestream that everyone loves dinosaurs.

The Space sim market isnt very large so i doubt another space sim as it would detract from Frontiers Blue Ribbon project.

Frontier games have tended to be what i refer to as Edutainment, in that you gain useful skills and knowledge while playing, without even realising it.

As a wild card, i would suggest a James Bond game as that is certainly an enduring franchise, that is known worldwide. My only issue with this is that it would be going outside Frontiers known area of expertise. Its also debatable as to the format the game would take. A bond game would need to have hot girls and lots of gun action along with bad boy villains. This would be breaking the mold for frontier in terms of their organisations culture.

Jurassic Park would be a good fit too. Think of a theme park game but instead of building amusement rides you are building a park of dinosaur attractions. Alongside of that though it's a survival game. You need to also build and maintain farms to produce food to keep the dinos fed and content, and you need to build guards and defense forces to keep the tourists safe while also controlling the more dangerous dinos. Typical themepark disasters would be replaced by simple exhibit malfunctions where the dinos get loose and you have to "contain" the situation.

That could be rather original spin on the themepark genre....

It is a new franchise. It is not a "enduring movie franchise of global renown"

Key word here is "enduring".

You can call enduring franchise only Alien and Star Track. Both of them are litteraly survived nowdays.

At almost 14 years old now it is hardly "new"

So, I hate to say this, but is anyone else a bit concerned that whatever this new franchise is, it might siphon development off of Elite? I mean we are behind schedule already, can Elite really afford to lose more ground?

I doubt very much that Frontier will be hiring an entirely new staff for whatever this new game is, so it is very likely that staff will be pulled from Elite and Planet Coaster to work on the new game. I have to say that I'm a bit concerned...
Not concerned, at least not yet. PC took little if anything away from ED, and both are doing very well. I imagine they would be assembling a new development team for this venture, whatever it ends up being.

I'll throw my favourite franchise into the mix, Battlestar Galactica. [heart] (A resurrection of Buck Rogers in the 33rd Century would be most welcome too!)

Surprised it too so long for someone to say it, someone had to. But really, you assume FD won't hire new staff to help with the growth? That would be a very strange thing for a company to do. I think its safe to say Braben is trying to grow the company, and that is why they are not sitting on one or two franchieses, but looking to grow, and that included bringing new staff on board.

Of course, they will share some resources, that's how you become efficient in this sort of business. With a single franchise you run the risk of having people sat around with nothing to do. By having multiple, when those artists have no work to do on one, they are free to work on another.

The only problem with more franchises is it gets harder to manage things, but hey, big development hosues cope somehow.

All in all, the more they have, the better it is for the company's long term future and stability, as long as they can effectively manage their resources.

Something based on 80's boardgames and early computer games that was a movie...Tron? (even though it's had 3 already)

Oh so that's what Frontier meant with "Season 3 might not be called a season". It'll be a single piece of DLC that pulls up a Jpeg reading, "Gone fishing. Be back in 2 years" :p

My bet is on either a Star Wars game or a Star Trek one. Perhaps the revival of the X-wing franchise - that'd be cool. If FD can search out and snag some former LucasArts devs that'd be great for Frontier.

If that's what it is, FD could put together something pretty quick just using the ED ship and dogfighting model.

For everyone predicting this will be the doom of ED, this could be the exact opposite, if FD work on a proper MMO, rather than P2P.

I'd be surprised if it is space themed, they already have elite.

But I also can't be bothered with the drip feed of information, or in this case just plain guessing as the statement says that they well release more information later in the year.

So will forget this until they come out and tell us.
