New Planet Tech is KILLER of Exploration (all terrain is tiling/repeating/not procedural/random)

Yes. I think it can definitely be done.

Horizons uses an assortment of pre-generated procgen surface features ("patterns") too, as a calculation shortcut, and some level of pre-generated shapes are basically required to not kill everyone's CPU (as rendering 1:1 scale planets entirely from scratch using only CPU cycles would do). Procgen placed "set pieces" were just used in a much more inconspicuous manner in Horizons. The devs need to use equivalent tricks to those that Horizons employs in order to fool our human eyes/brains into not noticing these recurring shapes and patterns on Odyssey planets as well.

Also the planetary textures, colouring and lighting system when viewed from orbit needs a serious working over to convey more depth and more blended colour transitions under all lighting conditions, including when the planet's surface is lit directly from above.
One of few sensible posts in this thread. Not enough hyperbole and gnashing of teeth :D

Whyyyyyy, why you did this to meeeee??? How to unseen it now? Looks like almost every planet have this.

Btw important question - theres same pattern on other planets, like exactly same pattern as seen on different planets, or its just repeats only on native planet? If second then all planets are still unique.
We've seen the dragon a few times.

I’m new here. I seem to have yet to learn how to properly DOOOOOM™...? :p
Using memes is always appreciated

He doesn't seem to understand that
1/yes everything is in low settings and it shouldn't
2/the new planet generation doesn't generate the same quality terrain than we used to have
3/a lot of the pattern you see from above are fake, as you go down they disappear

Everytime we say that he go and cry "POTATO PC" and how we are all wrong.
And when he does run out of other reasoning. He goes finds a planet and says "fiNd tHe RepEaTinG TExTurEs" (he has done this a few times in this thread now). Like yes, SpaceisHuge, we know it doesn't exist on all planets. I guarantee you he is flying to a random system, doing fly bys going "no that's not a good example" as many times need until he can go "aha gotcha!". The issue isn't it exists on all planets. The issue is they are easily identifiable, on average gameplay settings (which is within his own demand for the the user to use med-ultra settings), and without looking that hard. The fact these textures can be found within a few hours of gameplay, is the issue. It was no where near as prominent in Horizons, as it is in Odyssey. Even when they did occur on Horizons they stayed that way all the way to the ground. Not just magically disappearing.

Of course, then you get down on the surface and realise all that stuff is barely higher than your ship. It takes the shine off somewhat.
It's probably nice to walk around in though.
I meant to comment before, you can't walk everywhere on Earth. So why change the universe to make all planets walkable.
It is a stupid change that seems to force players into an FPS game.
Add: "violent expletive" directed towards the idiots who thought this was a good idea.
Checked Pomeche. That has not changed for Horizons. So, I guess the flat stick has only been applied to Odyssey at the moment.

You think they'll redo the planets one more time?

The first pic is what I took from an icy planet just now - the second is the steam page pic...now that meme that says - "it's the same thing" will go well...

Not a fair comparison imo.

I still don't think the tech is good, but you should be careful with how different the locations are.

Legs is life, legs is power, legs are immersive, legs making you feel vastness of space better, action on legs is funnier. Can live with bugs, cant live without legs.

Has anyone tried to report this as an issue? What was the response?
Ross said, that smaller planets will have higher mountains because of the lesser gravity.
Maybe they set it wrong and it is a bug after all.
