No Ship Interiors: - Oops!

I was hopeful for interiors, as there are so many game play elements that could be created to breathe more life into the game. I hear some people complain that walking around your ship would get old in like 2 minutes... that would only happen if there were no game play elements accompanying that feature, and there could be lots of good, fun and realistic game play mechanics involved with walking around and interacting with the different areas of your ship. Ship interiors can be far more then just "wandering around your ship aimlessly"

Making a boot that uses negative feedback sensors to sense walking motions and control groups of electro-magnets wouldn't be that difficult.

That said, walking around a hull shouldn't be directly impacted by lack of "artificial gravity".

Being able to survive 9G in a standard flight suit, much less min/max ships being able to lift, without some form of gravity control screams handwavium.

Seriously, apart from taking a leak into the kitchen sink perhaps, what engaging gameplay could possibly result from ship interiors being made available?
- You could break in to a cmdr's ship and swap all the knives for spoons in the cutlery drawer, Like a space Alanis Morissette.
- Play hide and seek.
- Buckyball running races around an annie.
- Engage in hide the sausage.

I like golgots analysis... ship interiors and stations was actually a separate bullet point in newsletter 29.

When you think about space legs at first glance yeah it doesn't make sense, but from playing elite for the last few years im kinda hoping they save it for another large release.

100% purely going by every major patch from 2.4 onwards, there's a characteristic about frontier or the elite team that just can't build video game features like everyone else. Making srv legs sounds like a big enough problem for them to handle in one go, (even given 3 years full time) if we're not going to get 1/2 baked junk. Carriers was being developed for 2 years, delayed by 6 months and still half baked. We have to be reasonable and respect what the developers can produce.

EDIT: Also why was the yamicks video deleted? Same as always except he screamed really loudly in what im guessing was shock right at the beginning.

I guess FD can allow us to walk around our ships only/whenever they are landed... which might be quite a bit easier to implement by skipping zero-g movement mechanics and I'd be more than happy with that.

If I get a lab to work on the plant and rock samples I'll collect (crafting workbench :p) - cool.

If it's just fluff I'll pass. Fun exactly once per ship and then just a lot of wasted Dev time.

Taking NMS as an example, having to jog through the dull corridors of a freighter got old halfway through the first time I had to do it. The only thing that would be nice is a seamless transition from cockpit to ladder/lift/steps but that'd only really work on the smaller ships. How would you get off a Type-9 for example? Base jump?
The tyranny of choice: Animatics or Fade to Black in options - both player types catered for.
This one surprised me, as I was expecting the exact opposite. I assumed all this new tech would be too much for the old consoles to handle, and that Frontier would make Odyssey PS5 / XB? only. The good news is that if old consoles can handle this new Odyssey tech, then my laptop definitely won't have a problem handling it!
Also means VR wasn't dropped over performance concerns which is hopeful.
...
I am talking about our own ships of course. Unless we get to sample the narcotics or slaves we have aboard I don't see what we'd do most of the time. I'm happy for the devs to prove me wrong though.
Virtual narcotics / slaves are never as much fun as actual narcotics / slaves... I've been told.

so the DOOM NO PS5! complaints are a little silly. But then, this IS a silly place!

No, the no next gen console complaints aren't silly at all, the new PS5 and Xbox Series X have a lot of advantages over the current gen like ray tracing, much faster loading times, etc.
I'm not surprised Fdev isn't implementing next gen console though, they're already having a hard time including engaging gameplay over the span of two years.

As for the platforms and where we’re headed, I’ll tell you that we’re looking at PC, Xbox and PS4, as far as what we’re pushing it to, it’s not currently planned for PS5 or the Xbox Series X. We’re continuing to evaluate.

"Not currently planned". Which means that the new consoles will have been out once it launched, but it won't be made for them. It may or may not ever be made for them.

Let's see ... within the context of Elite: Dangerous being able to walk around the ship interior could offer the following game play:
  • manually repair your ship.
  • boarding other ships.
  • repelling boarders.
  • going to the passenger cabin to talk with the passengers, thereby increasing (or decreasing) their level of happiness.
    • with physical PC to NPC contact: throwing that jerk passenger out an airlock (I know you've had at least one of those if you do passenger transport missions).
  • since this is Elite: Dangerous ... BASKING in the glorious interior that is the Imperial Cutter.
  • Finally figuring out what that room on the nose of the Anaconda is for.
and that's just off the top of my head.

But virtually all of the things people are suggesting as "new game play elements" are nothing more than taking what we can do right now, instantly, from the pilots chair, and adding a time sink to them.

Ship interiors might be a bit difficult due to our semi-magical ship holds.
You could fit an SVR or SLF module into any compartment where they would fit, yet they still launch from the same spot on your ship.
You can move modules around without caring anything about the layout of the ship.
So it might be a bit difficult to design the interior of our ships due to the modularity.
A work around might be that we could only walk around the cockpit area while the rest of the ship is off limits. But I think people would get ed if they couldn’t walk all through “their” ship.

A nice to have, for sure - if I was a project manager at FDev though, I'd have to think hard whether it makes sense to get my team to work on a 100% optional feature that most players will likely skip after trying it once.

Though I suppose it wouldn't be the first such asset to be in the game (Thargoid map anyone?), so what do I know.

(Thargoid map anyone?)
Heh - I was going to reply "Once, most have never seen it once!". Then I remembered that in following the Thargoid invasion I decoded the messages from 3 of those sites each week for over a year ( so I saw it ... around 150 times) - so I'm the one that got my moneys worth out of that addition :D

In many ways my worry is that they do add walking around your own ship - which will be 10 minutes of 'ohh', and never again. Then again I worry that the same will be true of EDO on planets - 10 minutes wandering around saying 'oh, that ship is big, this planet is pretty' followed by ... but what do I do?

I guess we'll see soon 🤷‍♂️
On ice planets ......

Just another voice opposing those who think ship interiors are a waste of time - I want ship interiors - that plus landing on atmospherics like in frontier elite 2 . I only play in solo , don't care to interact with other players and there is plenty of game play in this game for me already - I am looking for the immersion factor . Sometimes I'll just sit in my cockpit (ship/srv) with the sound up and listen/watch and thats just as good "game play" for me . I would like to walk through my ship and sit - look out a window . SC is a buggy mess - when it is less of a Buggy Mess then it will likely satisfy my requirements and I'll play less of ED .
