No Single Player offline Mode then?

So has FD formally apologized to all it's backers/customers who can no longer play the game they backed/purchased for all the reasons stated in this threadnaught? I havent seen any developments on that front anywhere, (maybe i missed it?) and while a letter of apology wont change the scrapped offline situation it will at least calm the anger and frustration of the gaming/Elite fans at large.

Cheers.

You're not the only one tired of this thread. 425 pages to moan about a decision that's already been taken is just ridiculous. We're supposed to be adults. There will be no offline mode so just deal with it. I hope a moderator closes this thread soon and stop people making more.

Maybe people would have dealt with it better had it not been dumped on them out of nowhere mere weeks from launch and in such a poor manner (tucked into the newsletter as though it were a barely relevant piece of information). Maybe people who had supported the game based on this mode and who now will not be able to play the game at all deserved a little better than that, I think so anyway.

You have no clue what you are talking about. Of course you can run a single instance on your computer with 30 NPCs around you fighting them. But i am talking about the WHOLE universe!!! Millions of NPCs, millions of markets, millions of events ...

I'm sorry I think that it might be you without the clue.

First off ED simulates 1 galaxy not the whole universe, secondly the overwhelming majority of that galaxy is essentially empty and "free" from a processing point of view once generated (which itself is probably surprisingly cheap computationally). The small area that is actually inhabited will be simulated using the same tricks that have been used for years. Even Frontiers servers will not try and track every single npc ship and trade, it'll abstract most of it and only generate the details as they are needed by players. Obviously this is a much smaller job if you only have one player as there is only one bubble of detailed space.

With all respect if you don't like the thread you have the choice not to read it or participate, but thanks for adding another post anyway.

You don't honestly think with your knownledge that they would waste computational resources on all 400 billion systems with npcs life simulation in them? On a a server setup a minuet fraction to that of eve onlines?

I dont think ED can accommodate every single lifestyle and connection challenged people in 2014. Sorry but the majority of us have good connections and a semi decent amount of time to play it. I dont see whats wrong with DRM or them protecting their game. Offline means too many hacks/ways to hack the legit game and all the headaches syncing stuff up is gonna hinder development for the rest of us it seems..

I actually forked out £50 for the beta on Friday, same day as this news broke but before. Even though I've had a lot of fun over the weekend playing this excellent game, I must admit I feel a bit shafted, because one of the main reasons I wanted to get this game is that I travel a whole lot, and I love playing this type of game e.g. on intercontinental flights, and in hotels where there is no or bad broadband (happens more than you'd think).

Anyway, I have to say, I love the game so far, all the detractors of the beta in general I think are shooting way over the target, this can still get great reviews if a few minor bugs are fixed, BUT BUT BUT....

IT CAN'T BE THAT HARD TO DO AN OFFLINE MODE WITH A STATIC GALAXY.

It just can't, period. It doesn't need to be in sync with the server version.

My feeling/fear here is that this is all more about DRM and ensuring that nobody can play without an online verified account, and that nobody can make clone servers based on the code in the offline client.

Well, Surprise Surprise, that's still gonna happen. But the legit players are going to suffer from this.

I sincerely hope that this decision is reversed, and that a fully offline mode is added in an upcoming patch.

Something a friend said to me this afternoon. "Do you think Elite Dangerous would have made the kickstart target if it was plainly said that the game was online only at that time?" A question I found very interesting indeed, especially as we at times thought it was touch and go if we'd make it at all.

They said it from the start. Then offliners came and complained, telling how it is disrespecting them keeping spirit alive, etc. They got their offline mode....and nothing happened. No millions of backers arrived. Because no one knew about ED at that time, and only those caring about original inception of idea, going around, begging on sites, picked project from the ground.

You know what got ED from the ground? People who hanged out at the middle of the slum. When we got -1000 every day (yes, minus one thousand). When someone thought it was funny to troll adding 4k and then removing them. At that low point, it was community which was there pulled themselves together, backed book projects, kept publishing statistics, didn't gave up. Most of them people with online connections.

So please, STOP spreading this myth.

Why would anyone need to run millions of systems on their PC simultaneously? Michael Brookes already has said it's possible to run Elite Dangerous offline on a single PC, but that Frontier didn't have the time and resources to develop an 2nd build of the game.

People, please!

You simply can not simulate everything they are doing now on their servers (in the cloud) on your computer.
So the only solution would be to reduce the complexity of the offline-version.
But then you might have 2 splitted game-experiences resulting in the possibility that - as Adept was already saying - precious content of the offline-version would become leaked. There is no way you can protect this from happening in an offline-version.

AND I DON'T WANT TO SEE YOUTUBE VIDEOS REVEALING ALL SECRETS OF ED WITHIN 2-3 WEEKS AFTER RELEASE!!!

PERIOD!

Only if you buy the flipping market data. The game has all 400 billion star systems accessible with varying levels of details. THAT IS WHAT THE ONLINE PORTION BRINGS.

The problem with this here is not the number of star systems or anything like that, but the fact that "solo" in "online solo" is in fact (and indeed) - indirectly forced multiplayer. Let me elaborate:

The game could be called online solo if every solo player was assigned his/hers instance of the universe and played in it - solo, without influence of other players (no matter how direct and/or remote/indirect). However, as it stands now, other players (through their actions in their solo and/or multiplayer universes), inadvertently influence game content of absolutely every player playing ED (be it multiplayer, private or solo).

I am one of the KickStarter backers and I must say that I find this quite disappointing. Sorry if it seems homophobic or anti-social, or whatever. But, when I want to do multiplayer or MMO, I do that. On the other hand, when I want to play the game on my own, in my time, on my terms, and at the pace I want and have set myself, I want to be able to do - just that! I don't want other living people having absolutely anything to do with my game in that case. I don't want them to influence it in any shape or form (be it directly or indirectly). It is MY game, and it is I who should decide whether and when I want others to have any effect on it (however small or indirect). Algorithms and procedural generation in such games are OK, as I yet have to stumble upon a griefing, powerplaying, y and rude programming code that runs 24/7, no matter whether my computer is on or not.

Also, as many people have pointed out here, I can still play (and am playing on an on and off basis) the good ole' Elite/Frontier games. The fact that they are offline means that I will be able to do that when/if I get to live to get to my retirement. ED? No such guarantee as it's partially stored in the oh-so-ever-changing Internet cloud.

I honestly don't understand posts like this. If you don't want to discuss it then don't come to the thread, it's as simple as that. If it doesn't affect you then just ignore it and the world will keep on turning. In fact, it works out better as people would simply be free to express their views.

By the way, taking people's money and then shutting down all discussion when people have grievances is a very bad look. I hope the moderators and staff do not do as you suggest and, to their credit, nothing suggests that they will.

No, they have not and it doesn't seem like they will. DB even retweeted a piece written by a fiction writer basically vindicating the whole thing. Slap in the face, rather than an apology... And all this after constantly waxing lyrical about how the game wouldn't even be being made without the support of the backers, etc. Nice!

Yep, the world has changed, everything is online now. Old elite is old, 30 years has passed. Welcome to the 21st century - hope you will stay for a ride!

Apart from the no-DRM thing.

And the 25 ships at launch.

And half the DDA topics.

And 9 months past the original estimate.

But yeah. Outstanding indeed.

Before Kickstarter and the whole early access stuff can you really say how many games launched on time and with all their expected features?

No, you can't

By that rational you cannot play any single player game ever in your life, because there are tons of Let's Play vids on YT for each and everyone.
Luckily, there is an easy solution for that: just don't watch Let's Plays of the single player games you own ;-)

Makes sense, doesn't it ;-)

You could just not watch those youtube videos, if they existed? Just a suggestion, alterantely the offline version doesn't need to use the same seed as the online version, so any offline secrets would be irrelevant to the online one.
