Planet Zoo 2 Speculation and ideas

One feature that could bring an additional dimension to the game would be specific, albeit made-up, conservation projects that can be donated to - I would say that every wild species, no matter its conservation status, should have at least one project (even globally common species can have local conservation issues). For example, there could be a 'Wildlife Conflict Mitigation Project' based in Southern Africa, and if your zoo keeps a species that benefits from that programme (using this example, the cheetah, caracal, African leopard, spotted hyena, wild dog, meerkat, aardvark and warthog could all benefit), your zoo gets a conservation bonus.

Some projects could benefit close to a dozen species, others may be specific and benefit just one. Some animal species may also be supported by more than one conservation project, if it has a sufficiently large range. You can also control how much each project gets from your conservation budget.

This idea was inspired by looking at the map of conservation projects that Chester Zoo has on its website...

...And also by the list of conservation programmes on the websites of both Colchester Zoo and ZSL.

I don't think it's something that would particularly make or break the game, but it would certainly add an extra something to the experience.

One thing is for sure, if PZ1 ends now and PZ2 is to be released next year, I ain't buying it before 1-2 years. I mean PZ as it is now is already great and up to my expectations. We have more than 200 species and a lot more with mods. I won't buy PZ2 until it has at least 75% the amount of species we have now :|

I'm ready to support modders right now to make PZ1 even better. They always did a great job and the community has the power to help them.

Yeah I'm of similar mind.

Not only PZ has roster so good to carry itself for some time, but I will finally try mods out, which is near infinite new content. PZ2 will also, as you said, need some time to bring up roster to satisfying degree, so that will need some time waiting up on.

Even if there's complete roster from beginning, the time frame is just too short, I'm completely fine to rock with PZ1 for couple of years and more, going forward

Now jumping in here. TBH, long time I was against Planet Zoo 2 and I always wanted that Planet Zoo 1 is a never anding thing like Sims 4 (lol, to much expectation). But now, looking at the packs (mostly Americas) it's time to move on. Most of the Packs we would get in the future would be full of hoofstock and so on. Of course, they are important, and I would be VERY HAPPY to get more, but the thing for me is the bird situation. Still no pheasant, not even a pelican, only one waterfowl (Swan). The ratites are good here, and also 2 penguins, but this is way too low for a zoo game. Especially in a game like planet zoo where your possibilities seems to be endless. However, the other thing is the animal quality, the ones from the base game, are so low partly, compared to the new DLC animals and I think it would be very good to have all the animals on one level.

3 penguins

Idk if this was mentioned before, but id really like an complete overhaul of franchise, or an additional mode. Like in theory i think i could enjoy managing finances and growing a zoo from the start up, but i really dont like how that currently isnt that compatible with making the zoo looks good and/or realistic. Like i dont want to put myself in crippling debt only to make a nice looking backstage.

So in essence id like a mode that merges the creativity of sandbox with a good management

All I want is for them to fix the market so that getting a male and female of a species doesnt take literal hours of refreshing the market

I mean… you can make good franchise zoos off rip you just have to cheat the games economy for the first hour and just build a small exhibit or habitat and food and facilities in a small square make profit and let the game run for a long time and what the funds roll in and boom money isn’t an issue anymore

I've gone into some thoughts on why sandbox is more "realistic" before (like comment subscribe 😝) but it comes down to more than finances. It's one of the core areas I want to see improved in a sequel. Including, but not limited to:
  • More freedom with terrain paints. Like, we can cover the terrain with concrete and the animal will still lose wellbeing because the terrain isn't right
  • An adjustment to animal AI or other changes to the way stress and temperature are measured. If there are sufficient available hiding places for the animal, I shouldn't get a notification every 30 seconds saying it's stressed out. If there is a heatwave every second hour that makes them uncomfortable, but I've specifically created areas they can go in to stay cool, I'd like them to recognise that. I realise that would be a stretch for processing power, but it is so liberating playing on sandbox and not worrying about it at all
  • A minor point but worth mentioning: the Challenge Mode animal market is a mess. I've spent 20+ minutes in the past waiting for a single animal from the species I want to show up on the market.
  • A huge one for me: some kind of automated animal storage for habitat animals. Currently, the only feasible way to run a large scale zoo is to put everything on contraception, or otherwise deal with animals fighting every 2 minutes. I'd like some improved options for this
  • Education is an utter mess. The habitat education boards are at least 2x bigger than they should be, and having to put educational speakers at every single habitat is so obnoxious. I can't think of any zoo I've ever been to with a single educational speaker...
  • Likewise, guest satisfaction is a terrible system. Guests annoyed at seeing facilities is the opposite of real life. When I played challenge mode in tropical biomes, I felt like I had water everywhere and yet I couldn't get higher than 3 stars for thirst. Improvements to these mechanics would make challenge/franchise mode a lot more bearable.

In general I would like time to pass slower in game or have that option in every mode. I've played a lot of franchise but I'm currently only playing sandbox because managing just get's so tiring after a while. Mainly when you have animals like capybara's who die quickly, breed fast, will fight eachother & will inbreed.

Based on a discussion from another thread, I think there should be a serious revision of prey and predator relationships. I like the idea that there's a lot of levels (0 to 41/Apex) for flexibility, but it's strange how binary the behaviour is. Here's how I'd change it:
  • If a predator's level is higher than an adult prey, predation can occur
  • If a predator's level is in between that of the adult and juvenile, intimidation occurs which prompts adult prey to attack the predator so they don't kill the juveniles
  • If a predator's level is lower than a juvenile prey, neither predation nor intimidation occur
I'll give some examples using these species:
  • Clouded Leopard (Predator, level 5)
  • Indian Elephant (Prey, level 30 adults, level 6 juveniles)
  • Red River Hog (Prey, level 6 adults, level 0 babies)
  • Capybara (Prey, level 3 adults, level 0 babies)
Based on the above, mixing these would result in the following interactions:
  • Indian elephants will completely ignore clouded leopards, as they pose no threat
  • Red river hogs will intimidate and attack clouded leopards, as they pose a threat to their piglets
  • Capybaras, adults and juveniles alike, will be hunted by clouded leopards

I'm definitely in favor of revisiting the socialization system in Planet Zoo 2. Right now, it feels like you can throw anything coded as prey together. And this interspecies enrichment often makes no sense. I mean, why do takins benefit from Pere Davidshrians, but Indian elephants not from blackbucks? The African elephant also has far too little of it—only baboons. But there are various examples where they live together with zebras or antelopes, and I don't know why that's not possible in Planet Zoo, or why they don't benefit from it. In general, I would also like to see more interactions, or even interactions at all, between species. That would definitely be desirable. Furthermore, species like cheetahs should be able to be easily socialized with rhinos without anyone feeling threatened.

While I'm on the subject of the social life of animals, I would also like to see more age groups. It just doesn't make much sense that a baby elephant looks like a newborn at 12.9 years old and is fully grown at 13. Sure, that wouldn't be so important for species like springboks, but it's especially important for elephants, great apes, giraffes, buffalo, and generally species that take 3-13 years to reach adulthood.

The sad thing is that they used to have a lot of interspecies enrichment options back in the beta, it just got axed for whatever reason

Peafowl also used to have interspecies enrichment (same between Indian elephants and Indian rhinos)
