Probably done with this game

I have over 900 hours in the game. What have I been doing if not gameplay?

Just because the game experience ED offers its players isn't something you love doesn't mean there is no experience to be had. It just means the experience isn't aimed at someone like you.
This. If the game isn't for you, move on. It's your fault and your decision if you decide to stop playing.

Don't play the game exhaustively, that's my solution. I tend to have a few weeks where I'll put a lot of time into ED then not touch it for months on end.

I was sure the OP would be stomped on for what he said. But the majority of posts in this thread are quite the opposite.

But the movies not over yet. Maybe it gets better.
Plus, haven't finished my popcorn yet.
Not sure what you mean there. The majority of the posts in this thread are along the lines of "take a break and play something else for a while" or "well then this game is not for you". I'm not sure what the OP created this thread for. Fine, I tried many games, and 90% were not my thing - I just left them and tried new ones. Those games were well made, and many people found them interesting, but I didn't, so I just tried other games. I could pin everything on those games, but that's not going to give me anything, is it?

Not sure what went weird with my post but something happened to it.
Don't understand it myself. Just ignore it.
Sorry about that.

OP. Rather than "being done" with this game - just take a long break. I've not played for about 2 months now and have no intention to play again until the next DLC comes out. In the meantime, I'm playing KC:D, X4, Civ 6 and a host of other games I've neglected for the last 4 years I've been playing Elite.

I'm having a great time and looking forward to what FDev do next.

I'm with most everyone else OP: just take a bit of a break.

For all the little immersion breaking things that are in this game that come to our attention after sinking incredible hours in, Elite is still one of the most immersive games out there; it's very easy to sink hundreds of hours into this game and not notice - enjoying it the whole time, spending all your time playing it. Then after playing this game for so long that you could've completed nearly a hundred other games, burnout sets in.

The hours you'll have put into this game are likely impressive, but burnout happens just the same.

I've been playing this game for three years now, and I've had my share of burnout moments, but I love gaming generally, and I always have a few other games that I'm playing alongside Elite, and that keeps the burnout at bay somewhat and allows me to easily dip out of Elite for longer than I normally would, focus wholly on another game or a couple of others, then come back without really getting the feeling that I've "stopped playing" Elite (you know, where you become out of touch with it and can't remember what you were doing previously, and then can't be bothered to pick up where you left off etc...), while at the same time refreshing my love for the game.

Although the one thing that I can't identify with in what you've said, OP, is about engineers. I've personally always enjoyed engineering since it became a thing, even when it was terrible. It's much nicer now than it ever has been, and I still enjoy it.

But each to their own, of course.

Take a break, come back feeling refreshed. There's no need to play this one game into the ground, and then ruin any chance of you wanting to return.

I whinge all the time about the game, because there is this kernel of - "this is sooo close to what I want", and the experience just falls a little short.

An mmo with no central servers, no pvp wvw architecture consistent with 20 years of mmos, no logical enforcement of security, optional alien invasion threat, dreadfully limited gameplay loops, ugly FSS scanning mechanic, no base building, no walking around etc. etc. Yeah yeah say something new Danicus.

The frustrations that evoke an emotional response are about that near miss.

The OP is demonstrating frustration because of the near miss mind set, not because the game sucks.

I think FDEV did great on the shoestring kickstarter development. They have redefined the spacegame genre in a huge way. This is a great model for a first step.

Now that FDEV seems to be eeking toward being a full scale lets say B or A- gaming enterprise (not quite AAA to be sure), lets hope they integrate some of the market sensible examples of mmos and recreate the game with all of the features a broader community can appreciate.

I never was a drama queen.

Try it sometimes, you don't know what you are missing!

Yeah I know that many of you are going to think "right, another complaint post, cya good luck" but I want to give my 2 cent as a normal player that basically is a nullity in this game.

I enjoyed this game, played so much and grinding as well and then I burnt myself, so I took a break before to return later, purchased a Phantom and falling in love again with ED. But afterwards my love started to fade again because I've found this game a little bit boring and then another break on it's way. This time many month passed without even updated it, so I've decided to return again by participating to the CG, helping to unlock a useless multi-cannon. Now FD said that the next CG is going to be in July, which means that "what I'm going to do in June?".
….
Actually they said the next Interstellar Initiative is starting in July and mentioned there well be player generated CGs in addition with the implication that these could appear sooner.
