As a VR player myself I understand why many are upset by the lack of VR support coming for Oddysey. But I have a suggestion at least that could possibly ease some of the backlash from players, both giving the Devs plenty of time to properly implement VR (if they plan to) or at least as a stop-gap to let VR players partake in the new DLC without having to logout and throw off their headset every time they exit their ship...
Adding a 'cinema mode' exclusively for the first person planet-side gameplay.
Basically, at the very least having the game shift to a flat screen in VR when you disembark, take VR desktop and bigscreen for example, you can have the player (ideally) just have the windows of their ship 'black out' to minimise GPU resources, and then play the on foot portion of the game through a flat monitor suspended in front of the player in their cockpit. At worst, if too graphically intensive, just suspend the player in a generic nebula background like VR desktop. This is most likely not that simple to implement but should at least restore faith in the VR players that they have not been left behind.
I'm probably being optimistic but I feel that would be a realistic goal to have implemented by or shortly after launch.
