Regards to VR support for Odyssey DLC

As a VR player myself I understand why many are upset by the lack of VR support coming for Oddysey. But I have a suggestion at least that could possibly ease some of the backlash from players, both giving the Devs plenty of time to properly implement VR (if they plan to) or at least as a stop-gap to let VR players partake in the new DLC without having to logout and throw off their headset every time they exit their ship...

Adding a 'cinema mode' exclusively for the first person planet-side gameplay.

Basically, at the very least having the game shift to a flat screen in VR when you disembark, take VR desktop and bigscreen for example, you can have the player (ideally) just have the windows of their ship 'black out' to minimise GPU resources, and then play the on foot portion of the game through a flat monitor suspended in front of the player in their cockpit. At worst, if too graphically intensive, just suspend the player in a generic nebula background like VR desktop. This is most likely not that simple to implement but should at least restore faith in the VR players that they have not been left behind.

I'm probably being optimistic but I feel that would be a realistic goal to have implemented by or shortly after launch.

Something I fail to understand is why each and every person feels the need to start their OWN thread about this. There are literally hundreds - surely you'd be better served by investing your time and effort posting on one of the existing ones and joining in that discussion?

I reckon there's a huge thread merge needed of all the ones about VR in Odyssey so that people can read all the opinions in a single place.

You are assuming VR is not being removed from the game completely.

My bad 🤦 It's my first post and I only just started ED this week, still a little disappointed about no VR in Odyssey tho but I'm still happy since I've got the whole game ahead of me so far to try out so I shouldn't be bored for a while.

As an aside, given that I believe 'walking' in VR is a bit vomit inducing, would it work if the VR headset was just made to show a 2D image when on foot?

Honest question.

I read another thread where a similar thing was suggested, as I understand it the angry mob ran him to ground about 20 meters out of the carpark.
He was clubbed senseless with VR headsets. FDev was blamed.

It would work as a quick fix, in the sense that the OP suggests, but it would not be a good VR experience ;)

The nausea aspect of VR can be overblown. There are plenty of locomotion options available now which have become standard and offer low/no nausea movement. The staples are controller relative & headset relative motion. Most noobs find them a bit uncomfortable at first but quickly adapt. Almost every VR game out there with first person walking offers them as standard now.

It’s pretty clear that the impediment to FDev adding VR is not precisely stuff like this, which has off the shelf solutions. It’s the performance, the UI, the interaction norms, the PvP balancing with classic control schemes etc etc. It’s a ton of dev to get all that to a decent standard.

Why? The game isn't even released yet and we don't know what the nature of the VR absence from the initial release will be.

I think they’ve been pretty clear on that front:

Is Elite Dangerous: Odyssey coming to VR?

Currently, Elite Dangerous: Odyssey will not be VR-compatible at launch. We’re big fans of VR and we are truly proud of the amazing experience that we currently offer in Elite Dangerous. However, the new gameplay, mechanics and features that will be introduced with Elite Dangerous: Odyssey means that we had to re-examine if we could deliver that same experience without compromise, which, for launch, means Odyssey will not be VR-compatible.

+

Just to add to this, VR will still be compatible with the base game and Horizons!

I went through the Thursday stream, and there's a minor glimmer of hope there regarding post-launch support. I'd be wary of reading too much into it though. It was some quick phrasing from Stephen while dealing with an angry mob & streaming the game ;)

So again, I mean, this is just the beginning right now. We've explained the reason why it won't be there on launch. Obviously especially with VR it's a very difficult... you have to get it really right, because people can get motion sickness and everything else, and all this other stuff. So it may not be there on launch. And we hope that it doesn't upset anybody, we do apologise. [29m35s]

Full VR quotes from the stream here

UploadVR got this further info from FDev:

In a follow up email we confirmed that VR support is still an open possibility sometime after launch, “with no defined date,” according to the company.

If you load Odyssey you will not be able to use VR.

It would work as a quick fix...

Thanks for the reply - as a non VR player I don't understand. I only want the best for all, whilst accepting that some will be disadvantaged, no matter how well meaning the intent.

So I guess it's a good idea then?

Thanks for the reply - as a non VR player I don't understand, but I'd like to.

The link there leads to a vid where I try and explain how controller-relative works. It’s in Fallout 4 so might make some sense there. The vid was designed in part to explain how the VR version differs.

The impact of the '3D' effect from binocular vision on your lizard brain is harder to get across in a vid though :D

(I sometimes try and explain the ‘being in the middle of the game' aspect with stuff like this, but it’s just part of what makes it cool ;))

It’s genuinely something that you have to try to get the appeal though really. (I went to a free trial at a mall to check it out, but unfortunately that’s not really an option right now :/)

I'm sure it's impossible to portray in a 2D video, and I don't wish to dispute such.

e. I would just like to think that making VR portray 2D would get around the vomit-inducing aspect of FP(S) for VR users. I'm 'happy' to be wrong.
