Since we’re back on the topic of media that we like, I recently rented the 1989 movie UHF. It didn’t do well at the box office because of the hit movies that also released that year, especially Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. It’s about a down-on-his-luck guy who gets put in charge of a local UHF television station (for those of you who don’t know, ultra-high frequency television channels often featured shows that were produced in the towns/counties/areas in which the station was located, which led to some REALLY quirky shows; basically, it was what YouTube is today). After the station strikes gold with a particular show, a local branch of a network tv corporation tries to shut them down. I really enjoyed it, and I think that it resonates more with people now due to the “small business versus the big corporation” trope that more people recognize now in everyday life. And the song that plays over the credits absolutely SLAPS! I recommend that everybody watch it. However, when the movie was being written, the writers wanted to somewhat base it on a series of sketches tied together by a central plot, so a good chunk of the movie sometimes deviates from the plot to focus on the sketches (kinda like the Monty Python movies), which are presented as the tv shows and commercials featured on the channel. Therefore, if you are willing to deal with the derailing plot, I think you’d really like the movie.
Also, one of my favorite shows, The Great North, is getting a new episode this Sunday night, which really excites me because this’ll be the second episode of the new season, and they only aired the first a couple of weeks ago.
