SleepyDelegate's Chronicles - taking the DBX around the Galaxy

Reporting from my journey, couple of weeks of silence... :) I was mostly busy with: Jump - Honk - FSS - DSS - Jump - and repeat... :) Taking pictures along the way, but nothin you have not seen yet... The usual, yet beautiful stuff... :)

But yesterday, my friend @Crumley messaged me in-game, pointing out a possibly interesting system nearby. I went to investigate, but it turned out to be just regular Blue-White star binary with Yellow star... Nevertheless, Crumley made me look around and stop for a while... Roughly 500ly away, I have found a Wolf-Rayet star... Plotted the course and raced towards that rare stellar body... On my way there, I got surprised by my on board computer, that I'm about to jump to a MS Star (I always check the notifications, to see what to expect from the next system, because Im easily scared and panicking quickly).. I cancelled the jump and though for a while... Never heard of MS Star before... Well,, it turned out to be a monster:

The Wolf-Rayet star was not that big, although it had much bigger mass:

I've just got to say that I love your enthusiasm; reminds me of why I started playing this game in the first place. :) If nobody has suggested it yet, I'd recommend visiting Colonia for a better FSD. It's a side trip from the direct route to Explorer's Anchorage, but the better range will pay for itself. Plus, they have just about every module your DBX can fit - they only lack the larger stuff. Specifically, Jacques Orbital in the Colonia system has a 5A FSD for sale.

Thanks mate, that is a useful piece of advice! I'm already passed the turn to Colonia on my way to Sag A, I would have to go back now, but once I reach the Sag A, I guess I will just take a couple of pictures and head to Colonia to upgrade my DBX as much as possible... That will probably make my exploration even more enjoyable, as I will be able to reach places I couldn't due to the limited jump range, especially those in the empty regions of our galaxy...

And thank you, I really enjoy the game a lot! There are couple of things I am missing from my days of playing X3: Reunion and X:3 Albions Prelude, like ability to capture ships, building your own factories, ships, weapons etc...

I also think some things could have been done better:
  1. stars could have been bigger, especially those red giants, I thought they would be bigger
  2. the graphics sometimes look a little bit cartoonish
  3. the navigation computer of the ship is really limited, at least to my current knowledge
Re Star size: this could be just because I have not yet seen enough, maybe there are super giants in the game, where you need to fly at the light speed for a minute to just fly around the star, but I have not yet found any star of such magnitude... IS there UY Scuti in the game?

Re Navigation computer:
So far the only way of navigating in space I have learnt is to select destination and that's it. You can't select waypoints. You can't filter systems by criteria in their name (like the system mass, that is indicated by that one letter), and you basically can't do much... I can imagine, that civilisation with technology so advanced, that they can scoop the fuel almost directly from the star surface, and capable of traveling at speeds exceeding speed of light, would be capable of crafting up a decent navigational computer...

Same goes for the SC: you can go 1000c fast and once you press the "decelerate" button, you go from 1000c to 30km/s in just couple of seconds. So the drive is capable of really hard deceleration. Yet when you fly to some object, it must be gradual process, that starts like 500ls away from the destination and then you must follow that 6s rule, because for some reason when you have a destination, the deceleration rate is suddenly an issue...

But those are only minor complaints, I am very happy!

Couple more pictures:

This is a regular Class M star in front of a C-N Star, despite being roughly 15ls closer than the C-N star, look how tiny it is... :)

A Wolf-Rayet C star (on the right) and O type star (on the left) close to each other... There was also third O type star, but farther away... This system had only these three stars, no planets and the system mass was rated H.

And a video of my black hole and two neutron star system encounter. I was originally very scared of the black hole, but then I learned that it is not that dangerous. White dwarfs and Neutron stars are much worse... So I got the courage and did a "extra vehicular" fly by close to it... And then crashed near the brown dwarf... 🙃
BTW, the music is W40K... :)

I stand corrected: star sizes are OK.

Today I have visited a system that blew me away... Or maybe sucked me in would be a better description... I almost could not escape the gravity of the supergiant in the system... Or maybe I could, but am lame and I enjoy being a drama queen... 🙃

Anyway, I started searching for systems with huge mass... And I have found one:
There were only two bodies - one Wolf-Rayet star, 105 solar masses. The other one: Class B super giant, 57 solar masses. But check out the diameters:

Wolf-Rayet: 9 solar radiuses
Class B super giant: 379 solar masses

I arrived in the system, facing the Wolf-Rayet star. The other one was out of my field of view. Honk and voila, just two bodies found. After opening the system map, I learnet, that the B super giant is roughly 20k light seconds away... Pretty far I thought, that will be just a tiny speck on the background and I would not be able to compare it to the Wolf-Rayet.

Boy was I wrong (Wolf-Rayet on the right, B super giant on the left):

I flew towards it and got close - roughly 2000ls close and my FSD slowed down significantly... I was flying to the right of the super giant, turned the orbital lines on to make sure I do not fly too close... When I was about 1200ls away, the star was on my port side (left) and I started noticing dangerous increase of temperature... I immediately started turning away from the super giant, but my FSD could not accelerate and I was just stuck there... It was as if like the FSD could not fight the gravity... The temperature kept raising and was close to panicking... Fortunately, I knew that panicking can really kill me here, or at least I thought so... So I just kept my nose away from the star and after a while that seemed like an eternity, the ship began accelerating and I finally broke free...

I have a video, I will post it here...

IS there UY Scuti in the game?

No. The ED universe was designed before UY Scuti was considered "the largest known star in the galaxy". To be more precise, it's speculated size was published in astronomical journals but hadn't yet filtered down through the popular science magazines or mainstream news. Back then, VY Canis Majoris was considered the largest, so in ED, VY Canis Majoris is the largest. UY Scuti was "just another barely-vsible variable star", not in the Top 100,000 Stars list, so didn't make it into ED.

And no, it's far too late now to add new stars to the game. The way the Stellar Forge works, adding a new star will effectively delete the entire procedurally-generated galaxy and replace it with another galaxy that looks almost, but not quite, the same. This would have the effect of scrambling everybody's First Discoveries to date. The only way they could get it into the game without wreaking havoc is to do what they did when they added TRAPPIST-1: get a procedurally-generated system and place a new system in exactly the same location, with exactly the same mass.

The concept, and some suggestions on a star system to sacrifice, are discussed in this thread and others.

If you want a lower base temperature you could turn off your power distributor and shields. You nee to remember to turn them back on for planetary landings/ occupied space though...

In terms of star sizes, one thing that's mildly confusing at first is that when you jump into a system, you're usually at a proportional distance from the star relative to it size, and the scooping zone is also relative. To immediately notice the relative size differences, you need to look at your distance from the star, and also the speeds that you travel while next to it.

One of the larger procedurally generated stars I visited allowed me to scoop at a speed of about 60c (60x the speed of light), if I recall correctly. Larger stars allow you to move proportionately faster while you're scooping, and so without looking at the numbers, you might incorrectly assume that they're about the same size.

Yes, thank you! That is exactly what I realised, when I was thinking about it a bit more... I realised, that as the stars get bigger, due to the gravity, you just can't move as close as with the smaller stars... That was just my theory, until I met that supergiant... Where my theory turned into an almost deadly reality... :) I thought for a while, that I'm going to stay there forever, that's how strong the gravity was... :)

And also, while observing that supergiant, I was roughly 1200ls away from it and it already filled my whole field of view... Let's just say the star was 350 solar radiuses, that means it would be roughly 245 000 000km x 2 = 490 000 000km in size... That would be 2/3 of the distance to Jupiter, far beyond Venus... That is HUGE...

As I said, I stand corrected... :)

I just wish there was some stellar body close to that super giant, so that you can immediately tell the difference... :)

Two hours ago I said I wish there was a system where there is a stellar body close to a B super giant... And I just found one...

Class B Super Giant with a CN Wolf Rayet star... On the pictures below, I positioned my ship, so that they are both roughly 1700ls away from me, so their size can be directly compared...

Enjoyed the meet up. Thought of the perfect place to meet, a class V within 1ls from the WD and the pics and video do it justice and is superb to see. For someone who has recently found the game your free camera skills are excellent (far better than anything I can do even after over 5 years of playing) :)

As for crashing my ship .... that's what happens when you put all pips to engine and concentrate on the ship your following instead of the ground :D Sure I'll carry on with 79% hull- it's just a scratch!

Thank you my friend, I really enjoyed it, it was a lot of fun! BTW, I already PMed you, I think I have a plan regarding the damage your ship took because of this meet-up... :)
BTW, some of the sound effects in the video are actually sounds of my car... :)

So today I have found my first Bio signals... On an HMC planet in a system with WW. I landed on the planet to check it up close, but it would not register in my Codex. I parked my ship almost directly on it, I'm looking out of my window on a forest made of sinuous tubers, but my codex does not register them... Do I need to do anything else? Do I need an SRV and drive close to it? Because I bought the Horizons DLC while in space and I don't have an SRV yet... Thanks for any advices...

Couple more pictures from my voyage:
