Some graphics settings questions for new VR guy

Nope, you're still just ranting from no experience ;)

Ok, now you are either just trolling (winking smiley or no), or proving that you really do have nothing better to offer than a witch's recipe of toad's bladders and eyes of newt. If reasoning is "ranting", then I'll happily rant for the rest of my life.

Still haven't calmed down then? Pretty emotive still

Hey, JoJon, I still love ya - and your grammar is waay better than mine. I have to edit 4 or 5 times to get close to how you write. Can't proof read to save my life.

Big man hugs!

Hang on, I put some info up based on my own experience to help others and you slate it with no experience to back it up. That's text book trolling mate, and then you're openly malicious - you need to re-think this.

@Old Duck - Frontier will give you a 'key' for Oculus free - which allows you to launch it without the steamVR overlay. DR Kaii I also recommend as very useful.

Shadows and AA use an unfair proportion of GPU power and very good results can be had with mild SS and those settings reduced.
I'd think the 2070 chipset has a reasonable enough grunt to not need to drop much (if any) 'quality' to play. (My 1070 laptop is ok with ED on mostly Ultra settings but no SS)
Recent improvements in the Oculus runtimes mean you are 'joining' with the software about as good as it gets (until the next round of optimising)
I recommend once Oculus software has installed to go to 'Settings', 'Beta' and turn on Public Test Channel (beta) as the current, V12, appears very stable.

ASW (Oculus) will 'smooth' out most of the lags, but expect it in stations, they are incredibly detailed in the activity going on...

Enjoy the rift S - there is little to compare to PSVR, really :)

Do you have to exit the game to switch between VR and "pancake" mode? I ask because I might prefer exploring (which is 99% FSS) using my monitor, but then if I find a system of interest, I could pop on my VR helmet for the visual part of the exploration. If I have to log out to switch to VR and back, it's not the end of the world, though obviously it would be nice to switch back and forth "on the fly".
Yup, I'm afraid so ... unless there's some voodoo I'm unaware of.

...
Actually... voodoo coming up...

If you start the game in VR, its always possible to switch to pancake mode by going into Settings/Graphics and editing the 3D setting. HMD (headphones) and HMD (Speakers) are VR, whilst you can set this to OFF to go back to pancake. Ignore the other settings, they don't seem to work with either my monitor or VR setup. If you didn't start the game in VR, the HMD options don't appear, even if you start up your VR system before going into Setup. You need to have VR working before you run the game.

You will need to adjust the graphics settings to your preferred values every time you change from one to the other however, which can be a bit of a pain.

EDIT I've only done this using Steam VR and a Vive, so I can't promise it works with Oculus

This game is excelent in VR - IL2_Sturmovik_Battle_of_Stalingrad
Would I need this game if I download DCS and used the free stuff?

UPDATE - after more research, I went ahead and pulled the trigger on IL-2, downloading now. The price is right, and I'm thinking IL-2 will work better on my modest hardware than DCS (though someday I'll try the latter since it's free).

My understanding is that "Super Sampling" is an instruction to the Elite: Dangerous software itself to generate a higher than required resolution image (which will then get downscaled again later, smoothing jaggies in the process) while the "HMD Image Quality" is an instruction to the headset's runtime software to do a similar thing. Most people recommend leaving "Super Sampling" at 1.0 and bumping up "HMD Image Quality". There are others however who reduce "Super Sampling" to something like 0.75, freeing more GPU for turning "HMD Image Quality" up even more (e.g. to 2.0). Personally I don't entirely get it (sounds a bit like a case of garbage in garbage out) but many swear by it.

It's two layers of filtering and will smooth out jaggies more for a given internal render resolution than just one.

I do the same thing outside of VR with in game super sampling (at 0.9 in my case, set manually in the custom.fxcfg file) while running 2.25x DSR to scale it to 4k on a 1440p display.

The only other thing is the "Anti Aliasing" stuff but it's notoriously ineffective in Elite, especially in VR, so personally I'd recommend turning it off and using the saved GPU cyles for more quality.

These are post processing AA filters. SMAA isn't bad and has a fairly low performance hit, so that's what I usually use.

DCS Word is free. You get an unarmed Mustang and a Su-25 Frogfoot mud mover. There are regular sales on DCS but it can be very demanding of your hardware and also a bit expensive for the software if you buy lots of modules and maps.

...I can't for the life of me find them in the ED system menu.

Great that Dr.Kaii's tool sorted you out!

...but there are a few more places in the game that have nested menus, so:

If you haven't got a key bound for exanding and collapsing menu trees yet, and do not want to use the mouse pointer on the little plus signs that indicate them, the function you need to assign a key/button to is: "settings/controls/miscellaneous/interface mode/UI nested toggle"

I’ll give that a go, my issue is that I don’t see a pointer in VR to extend/collapse them.
Many thanks 🙏

IL2 Runs far better for me in VR compared to DCS so your assumption is certainly correct for me, it's also awesome in VR but it's worth using opencomposite instead of steamVR.

I found in my Rift that I didn't have to restart the game, I could go into graphics settings and turn 3D on and off, click apply, and be in my selected mode without restarting the game.

But:

there's a drop-down menu for your preferred VR mode - when going back to VR make sure you select the right option;
unless you want to be stuck in the window that VR echoes to the screen when you go into flatscreen mode, you have to manually set your resolution and window type every time you enter flatscreen mode - it's a real pain.

I'd love a bindable toggle between my preferred VR mode and my preferred flatscreen mode, but there ain't one.

Of course a giant storm of doom would hit the US right when I'm expecting my Rift! Oi, looks like fun day will be postponed :(

So back to my noob questions. If I run Steam, do I need to still download and install Oculus software for my Rift S to work? I'm assuming the answer is yes. Can I do that now while I wait for my headset, or do I need to plug in the headset BEFORE I install the software? I'm assuming I can at least download the software, right? Anyone have a handy link? Again, this is assuming that Steam doesn't automatically do all this for me.

@ Old Duck

Yes. You need Oculus software.

In my experience I find the game runs better running straight from the Frontier launcher or the Oculus Home launcher. Steam seems to knock a few FPSs from me. If you buy from Steam Frontier is happy to provide keys for whatever platform. :)

Good luck weathering the storm :/
