Some ideas on getting the most out of the upcoming content

The ideas presented are awesome. Totally blown away by the amount detail and thought these guys put into this. Something like this is the prefect vehicle for FDev to highlight the Beyond enhancements. They'd be fools to pass up an opportunity like this but in either case this should certainly be an endeavor to remember. Can't wait to get started.

Telescope ideas

Those are awesome ambitious ideas, CMDRs.

I especially like the telescope where a whole new set of mechanics can be introduced:
  • Exploration missions - "We've detected ammonia in this system, there may be something there. Survey and bring back"
  • Rent the telescope yourself for redirects for x hours, get y systems to survey. More time, more expensive, higher likelihood for discovery, but hey you gotta use all that mined Gold for something right?
  • Broadcast virtual & real stellar events as seen from the telescope
  • Deliver some of those rare materials found in areas outside the bubble to temporarily supercharge the range of the telescope
  • Minor rare & major extremely rare discovery potentials, but much more likely than without the telescope

Looks like a thought out and very well considered proposal. I'd certainly want to get mining out there. Let's see if Frontier bites.

One question though. In the past I always had in my mind that Sagittarius A* remains politically neutral and under no control of any faction, independent or otherwise, in the event of the system developing settlements and space stations. That said, I always envisioned that the first such station would be a scientific outpost, so I'm looking forward to it appearing, and if it's to be maintained by some form of organisation, then let them do so in the name of galactic peace.

I'm also hoping that once these stations are constructed, then something special comes of them, such as data forming the basis for new and exotic technologies and new expansion in the future.

As one of the rare folks who actually enjoy mining, I welcome anything that promotes the use of mining within a larger narrative.

Combining it with exploration and surveying, and I'll be in hog's heaven!

The introduction of Player Positioned Beacons usable by others has been floating around the forums since at least early in 2.2.
The number of ways such devices could be used for emergent content is very interesting.

The few I can think of...

Race Course and meeting markers/waypoints
Marking/highlighting/preserving High value items found in POI's (as well as, perhaps, preserving the POI itself for a limited time)
Stimulating other POI signals into Super Cruise Space (Pirates... me thinks you would have another ambush mechanic!)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Real world Prospecting/Mining is about finding the resources, determining a rough concentration, marking the location, claiming it, and then bringing in the heavy machinery to extract and process the material.
(note: sometimes they don't all go in that specific order - Claim Jumping was... and still is... a thing at times)

Today we have satellites providing spectrographic data and ground penetrating RADAR joining the good old fashioned Hydrology, acoustical seismology, and Geo-chemistry to help us understand what lies beneath our feet... what might they have in 3304?
New (physical and scientific) tools for both Prospecting and Mining should include everything required to learn about (i.e. "research"), discover, mark, sample, extract and process the various materials for use that we find or have yet to find in the Galaxy.

Distant Worlds II is betting that some of these expectations will be met or exceeded.

Good luck, FDEV :)

I don't know, I have very mixed feelings about placing anything at Sgr A*. Even it's "just a scientific post", it feels like defiling a site like the summit of Mt Everest with our human trash.

I'm not convinced about that.

I love the idea of deep space prospecting and mining... I really hope the megaship will work out... if so count me in as a Miner. (Explorer/Deep Space Prospecting)
Have to drop the fuel and repair limpets for some collectors and prospectors!

What would people's opinions be on a competing team effort (or teams using carriers) to get to sag A* and construct in a nearby system first?
To mimic the races to the poles and the space race.
I'm aware this does oppose the intention for the expedition to solely be for the good of humanity and science, furthermore disrupting the proposed accompaning CGs.

Would also allow for operation similar to a Rally Raid where the Megaship is the Bivouac moving to the set Waypoints, the Carriers are the engineering support vehicles and the player, wings or squadrons are the compettitors. Yes I'm aware that this particular idea heavily detracts from the originally proposed premise, just a thought that popped up with the Dakar Rally and the Africa Eco Race being on currently.

This sounds very cool and I'd say it will involve more coordination than the standard player submitted CG form to get going. I haven't finished reading the entire proposal yet but I have to consider that such a megaship will be a prime desired target for anti player groups and dare I say, that possibily should be considered. In reality, it would likely mean that the expedition ends on the first day if the ship is allowed to be destroyed, however.

As for the naming of the ship. Nice idea but this is the internet and you will end up with explorer mcxploryface or worse for a name.

Sounds like it could all add up to something pretty cool if it all comes together.

The return should be a run across the top or bottom of the galaxy building more telescope arrays every few kylies. Then there's the line along the bottom. And filling in the gaps over time. This could go on for ever. All over the top and bottom surfaces of the disc, telescopes everywhere.

VLBI? You ain't seen nothing yet - we could make the entire galaxy into one giant telescope!

This sounds like a fantastic way to expand upon the first DWE to me, and already I'm busy brainstorming various load-outs and activities for the mission!

One huge caveat - I am concerned about the apparent approval of lets call it 'anti-player' behavior - I feel like there should be a better option for 'opposition to the CG' than this.

The whole reason DWE 1 was so great was that everybody was in it together as part of a community, with the challenge being the distance and the nature of exploration itself. Having to be wary of everyone ruins that community aspect, and as far as I'm concerned that's the primary driver for the expedition itself.

Potential PVP also dramatically reduces viable exploration ships, since people would have to spec for possible PVP rather than merely using shields (if your ship has room) as safety for landing. This is going to favor the big slow ships over smaller more unconventional explorers.

Additional Ideas

  1. Prior to the launch of the expedition, the Elite Dangerous community could submit names for the fleet flagship (Megaship), with a public vote to nominate the favorite name submitted.
I would like to submit the name Shippy McShipface for consideration.

That first post, Holy Novels Erimus, that may be the single most impressive post I've ever seen on these forums!!!

So much exploration gameplay potential, I was smiling in wonder and amazement from ear to ear while I read all of it. Twice. It all sounds so awesome. My two favorite activities in Elite are deep space exploring and mining, and this proposal combines them both while giving them purpose. I also love the concept of the expedition constructing a science outpost at Sag A and a telescope array out at Beagle Point, I'm totally on board with both of those. I feel like it's time for humanity in Elite to stretch out a bit more, it's been four years now, time to start settling meager roots out and about the galaxy. What better way to do that than with a huge expedition combined with immense cooperative efforts.

Man I hope this happens like it's proposed. I wouldn't play anything but Elite for the entirety of the expedition with gameplay like this incorporated.

My suggestion for the mega ship's name: The Distant Star.

Wow. Amazing proposal. Now i'm interested.

Points:

- Do the rock rats actually / still exist? Because their home system is one of the best perfect goldilocks systems in the bubble. As soon as i found it i moved my fleet there and haven't moved.
- Having a moving base seems a bit op, wouldn't that be nerfing the awe of being so far away? It would only feel right if the cg's (or now repair efforts) to move it were significant. Just hopping somewhere for a weekend feels wrong.. i think something like that would be better as much longer project rather than just for the publicised expedition.
- Related: I think humans commanding sag a is a bit much. That is beyond our pay grade, we should leave that well sacred.

This is an incredibly exciting proposal. It's clear the DWE2 organizers have put a lot of time and care into giving players something to work together on, and a real sense of purpose for the whole trip. I've never participated in an organized expedition before, but I'm really looking forward to taking part in this one, For Science!

I hope Frontier are reading this thread and taking inspiration from the ideas put forward here, and perhaps dedicating more resources to supporting community projects like this. At the very least I hope it demonstrates how many players want to see deeper, more engaging exploration mechanics and long term goals to work towards.
