Spring dlc Speculation 2023

“We intend to grow the number of our development teams to increase the cadence of new releases, whilst continuing to nurture our existing portfolio, to achieve sustainable growth.” - Jonny Watts, Frontier CEO

Not good news but also maybe not to Planet zoo which performance and sales are still growing.

Thanks for sharing, very interesting news btw.

Dear friends, do you remember this guy? Yes! It’s Baird’s tapir dressed as Malayan tapir. Probably for Halloween 😂

We decided we want to change that. Please sign our petition to Frontier if you support our cause 🙏🏽

Already signed, of course!
Anything to fix the poor malayan tapir, for a better future for him!

I believe we should be looking at steams top sellers to see how popular certain packs are
  1. Planet zoo base game
  2. Grasslands
  3. Twilight
  4. Wetlands
  5. Aquatic
  6. Conservation
  7. Europe
  8. North America
  9. Australia
  10. South America
  11. Africa
  12. Southeast Asia
  13. Deluxe upgrade
  14. Arctic
It's evident that this week shows the most recent dlcs are selling well but maybe not as high as frontier hoped I guess. Likely sales are carrying over from the winter sale and newer dlcs so it's safe to say that wetlands and aquatic still are the most popular where newer dlcs are typically bought since they are new additions - these can be existing players stocking up the packs or new players getting drawn into fresh content

Sorry, I don't know if I'm reading that correctly... Does that list mean that the oldest packs (which have been around for years and have the lowest price) are among the least popular (South America, but specially Arctic)?? And that forum-acclaimed packs like North America and Africa have been sold less than the newest ones? The just released Grassland and Twilight are the best DLCs? 😳
I'm very surprised, but the alternative is that PZ base game is not the top seller and Aquatic is on the bottom part of the DLCs. Either that, or I don't know what that ranking means. Source, please? 😳

No, this list means what is best selling at the moment, not all the time. And you can check that yourself at the Steam shop. :)

I think Frontier once shared that the most selling pack was the Aquatic, and I doubt it changed ever since.

Alright so what I took from the top sellers of this week was:
  • More recent dlc packs are more favourable - better reviews, improved marketing and newest additions will always favour good sales compared to older products. While we may not read reviews or buy based on the release video, the general audience will
  • Older products have harsher reviews like arctic and south America leading buyers to better reviewed products like wetlands and conservation
  • While it is newer, it is safe to say wetlands is more popular to north America. Frontier was successful at changing the audience with a wider capture range thus appealing to more people compared to single packs focusing on a single region
  • As I mentioned, twilight and grasslands are new . It does not mean these are the most popular of this year but rather the most appealing during winter sales. Further proving the point it doesn't matter what star animal is featured on the store page
  • Source is steams top sellers. Find the top seller page on the steam store (first page scroll down) and then type planet zoo once in the top sellers page and you get this list
So why are older packs less popular than newer packs. Well the simple answer is that planet zoo has a fairly stable playerbase without much fluctuations meaning that most players have already bought the older dlcs and buying newer dlcs to finish the collection. New players confused with all the dlc choice will head to Reddit or wherever and ask us what dlc is best? What is at the bottom of our recommendations - that's right arctic and south America

I'm not actually sure if the all time top sellers is publicly available information since top sellers on steam is just weekly. We know aquatic is still a front runner on the best selling dlc, estimations judging on general social media content can say the newer animal packs are aswell but that's pure speculation

My gut tells me the next pack will be Rainforest or Islands themed, and will get the Tasmanian devil in.
If it is Rainforest we won't, that wouldn't make any sense... If Islands happens surely we get the Tassie devil, no way that pack happens without it 😅

I am still currently leaning towards our next pack being a Rainforest animal pack, it's the next biome that Frontier can stuff a lot of big requests in to and reuse a lot of rigs... I think they just flipped scenery and animal pack last year because of Halloween tbh. I keep changing my predictions but this is where I am right now:

  1. Linnaeus's Two-Toed Sloth - This is the star of the pack, people really want sloths and they are popular with both the casual and hardcore audience. Seems like an absolute no brainer for a rainforest pack.
  2. Red River Hog - This also seems like a no brainer to me, this is a very popular choice and would give us a third pig. I can't imagine this needing a new rig either, would be an easy and satisfying addition!
  3. Goodfellow's Tree-Kangaroo - Even though the focus for "continent representation" has moved to South America for most people there is still a good few Oceanian animals that people really seem to want... This is one of the most popular and works perfectly for this pack.
  4. Black Howler Monkey - A New World monkey seems like it is an absolute must have for a rainforest pack, I'll bet on this species as it is currently the most wanted but we could be surprised.
  5. Golden Lion Tamarin - Is two New World monkeys too much for one pack? Honestly I don't think so, this is such a varied group and overall people have been begging for them. I think pairing a larger and smaller species together would be more than fine and make lots of people happy.
  6. Sloth Bear - Another bear is something people have also been asking for and we seem to always get some kind of carnivore. Having a representation for mainland Asia would be good for a rainforest pack and people want more Indian animals in general it seems. I don't see many people talking about the sloth bear but they do in fact inhabit rainforests in western India!
  7. De Brazza's Monkey - There has been quite some demand for another African monkey... People seem to be focused on the guereza but I decided to land on the De Brazza's Monkey! I think this species would be easier to adapt from the existing monkey rigs and it would also be a bit of a surprise and we all know how much Frontier loves those. I don't think three primates is too much if all are quite different enough, Frontier knows how much people want primates and this is the perfect pack to give us a wider selection.
  8. EXHIBIT - If we get a regular exhibit I would say a chameleon of some kind, if we get walkthroughs who knows? Maybe a small parrot species or hummingbirds?
Personally I'd be really happy with this pack, 3 South American, 2 African, 1 Asian, and 1 Oceanian is a good mix... And who would say no to 3 new primates?

We talk so much about the Tassie devil that I can now imagine the trailer with a Tassie reveal, and seeing the ugly-cute animal with its glossy black fur emerging from the tall grass.

At this point, if Frontier didn't know before, they should know now how much it's asked for, at least on the official forums. I'm not sure about Reddit (I never really use that site), the Steam forums, or any other Planet Zoo community

The devil seems to be very forum centric, sometimes Reddit wishlists mention it but as expected very few casual players know about it. It is becoming similar to the capybara case where we might just get it because of this many requests appear for the animal

Well, keep them requests coming, then
Much how like a nocturnal/crepuscular pack would have felt incomplete without bats, a tropical rainforest pack would feel incomplete without some sort of flying birds imo
Yeah, I think so. If flying birds, whether free-flying or in WEs, aren't added, then at least ground/wading birds, like the scarlet ibis, ducks, Victoria pigeon, etc.

I'm hoping for screamers

I reckon Rainbow Lorikeets are next on the Walkthrough exhibits list. I reckon a Rainforests pack with them as the exhibit animal would go down a HUGE treat. I just hope we can get a Sloth and Birds in the same pack, because I cannot go another DLC without a sloth!!!

I have not played for ages - the game is too stale and same same animal reskins keep being released. I think we need new transport options and variations, an underwater glass tunnel system, aquariums, hotels, and aviaries - just getting too stale - or I'm just old and cranky now - could be that too. ;)

How about something like an returning favorites animal pack, filled with typical contenders for "why wasnt this in x pack" while also not nessecarly having another clear shot for a pack?

Id choose:

  • European Moufflon (A wildpark staple)
  • American Black Bear (the one all the NA players are asking about)
  • American Flamingo (we desperatly need a colorfull south american bird)
  • Greater Rhea (Back bone of most south american sections)
  • Greater Kudu (large African Antelope)
  • Squirrel Monkey (super common monkey)
  • Literally any macropod
  • 5 more Butterflies for the WE

You might have noticed a second theme, all these animals are quite similar to animaks in game, with this being in my opinion propaply among the best "clone" pack you can make thats lower effort but doesnt feel like it, being a smart way to allign both themes into something that doesnt feel as cheap as a "close relatives" pack or whatever with each of the animals adding more then the typical stuff you see for clone packs
