Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

Dear gods...

One guy expresses concern that he might not get to see SC released, since he is suffering from some sort of degenerative disease, and he's met with this from one of the Spectrum faithful:

This is the sad truth of life, it's always a possibility and other games are not immune to the same effect. How many avid GTA fans will not make it to see GTA VI released? When I decided to support this project I knew my support will benefit future gamers more than it will me either directly or indirectly through longer term changes in the way future games are made.

I worked in the field of medical research prior to becoming a registered nurse and that discipline is well aware that the testing time from a new discovery of a treatment to the time it becomes available has this sad reality - some who could have benefited won't live to see it available as a treatment option, but there is no other safe choice than to follow protocol, which takes years. There are some very exciting developments currently in the field of medical research, particularly with regard to degenerative diseases, spinal cord injury and aging, which are going to change things dramatically in the next 10 to 20 years, by which time I'll be in my 70's and 80's - if I live that long.

Everyone at CIG are well aware of this and CIG customer services have shown some impressive levels of compassion toward those struggling with difficulties over the years.

What absoloute garbage. GTA fans have had years of released GTA games to play. I've lived through GTA 1 to 5. How many versions of Star Citizen have i lived through? Zero!

Also, monocle cat here gives away his age, he's already 60. Perhaps he should be getting a tad nervous about SC's release rather than excusing it.

As an aside, from his use, it's not clear that Chris knows what diegetic means... but then I've a feeling such unknowns are not in short supply for him.

Time for a Xeno Retreat?

I was at a bunker earlier and died to a huge desync. The Hospital was super laggy so I logged out and back in. That's the context, what follows next is in the video.

XT: [Video] How I spend my first 5 minutes ingame

I never imagined I’d hate this event. Since the time XT was announced, I’ve only seen 2 completed and majority stuck due to cargo not spawning.

Worst of all, is this latency nonsense which is so dismal that after waking up from bed and heading down to the terminal, the game pulls you back into bed. This was me trying to log in. prior to the recording I made it as far as the elevators before the game pulled me back to the bed and it eventually glitched and tossed me into the station.

Could you please, at the very least, limit XT to maybe twice a day at most? I swear I think I have PTSD of hospital and hab beds at this point.

The true problem in their argument is no one paid for GTA 6 yet (or whatever future release of that game, i've lost track) and everyone who paid for the previous iteration could play it and enjoy it fully. While that guy with the disease and certainly a lot of others over a decade of delays, will never see the product they spent their money on. I suppose it could happen for other games, statistically, between pre-order and release, but here the scale is entirely on another level.

Add to that the "Wing Commander factor" where a lot of older gamers just threw their money at CiG out of pure nostalgia, and the fact SC is marketed as a "simulator" (which we know is kinda opposite of reality, but that's how it's sold (*)) would certainly raise the average way above usual gamer age.

(*) Also appearance at first glance (on a static screenshot) would certainly fool someone into believing this is a simulator. Multiple MFD's, lots of apparent buttons, a detailed HUD... Yeah it all crumbles once it gets in motion but think how the dream is sold.

Not only that but there have been several opportunities to buy the GTA games on sale for next to nothing, some of them have been available free at times.

and in beween GTAs Rockstar have released other games including RDR2 which has such a huge scope and so much to do that it makes SC look pathetic. Only thing it can't compete with SC on is world size, and most of SCs world is empty anyway

Seriously? No, wait… there’s only one proper reply to learning about this kind of information…

Remember, not everyone taking part during Xenothreat is flying a ship ;)

...There are many turret gunners who volunteer to spend all 3 phases in a turret rather than turn up in their own ships, or folks who spend the entirety of phase 2 transferring cargo from the Starfart wrecks onto waiting ships, how were they supposed to get paid?... Except for perhaps relying entirely on the good will of some completely random dude flying a ship to pay them out of goodness of their hearts...Or what happens if the ship you're in is refuelling or rearming, or gets destroyed and you're sitting at a station when the phase completes?

The global reward system on completion of each phase was to encourage everyone to take part, regardless. All you had to do was turn up at a certain station and sign up. You may scoff at the idea...but for the first time ever in a multiplayer game, myself and many others actually witnessed and took part with an entire server population working towards one end, cooperating to complete 3 differing phases of an online event...not by turning up in fancy ships but actively just turning up, ship or no ship....and it worked.

I never had an empty turret in my Tali bomber during my first XT, nor did I ever have to leave the cockpit of my MSR in order to load up with cargo to complete phase 2, there were endless volunteers willing to specialise or just fill an empty turret in a random ship just to take part.

My second XT, I spent the entire event in the turret of @Intrepid3D 's Cutty Black :)

However...now on it's umpteenth iteration... it's just plain boring

You've made quite a few good points, but my reaction was to the notion that CIG doesn't even have a way of detecting whether someone has contributed to their event in some way, and thus eligible for the reward, so they just reward anyone who just happens to be logged in at the right time.

This is MMO-101 level stuff here, and they're failing at it.

There are a few who just head out to the station and sign up then go AFK of course, always are...but the first couple of times XT was run...everyone on each server I was on actively cooperated, volunteering to crew ships or jump in in any role where they were needed, even switching servers when the event was completed rather than wait out the 2 hour reactivation sequence on the server...or even opposed the event by flying pirate ships and attacking the convoys restocking the Javelin in the space dock or taking sides with the NPC bad guys during the majority PvE event to give it a bit of PvP spice. It was very good for the first few times they ran it. There were supposed to be more types of those 'dynamic' missions of course...but Ci~G will be Ci~G.

As for detecting whether each individual was actively taking part at any given time during the event...I've absolutely no idea how they could have. Number one reason being as I mentioned, not everyone was flying their own ships...or flying at all. There were also endless runs back to Mic L1 to rearm & repair, respawn, reclaim ships, pick up new gunners or crew when folks had to log out for RL reasons... the global payout scheme just kinda worked... for good reason or bad.

I should mention that if anyone had signed up for the event then left the area to just swan about elsewhere in Stanton doing mining or cargo hauling or some other task for personal gain, they didn't get paid. The payouts only happened if you remained in the immediate vicinity of the event (Mic L1 and the area around the Jericho space dock). If you left the area, even to fly down to nearby MicroTech or it's orbital station, you had to sign up again on returning.

I wouldn't say I'm widely known for praising or defending Ci~G for any reason whatsoever...but XT as an event... initially... was pretty good 🤷‍♂️
