State of the Game

... Lynch puts a heavy spin on things with the over the top Harkonnen.
But Lynch's "over the top Harkonnen" elicit a very emotionally powerful impression on the audience, the vast majority of whom, like me, have likely never read the novel(s).

So it may be a subtlety in the books that is not easily translatable to the big, or even small, screen and he had to bring it out for the majority of the audience. Ya know, because being in the real world means you can't always do things in the best way vs the most useful/acceptable.

I'm just guessing here but this is typically what I find with many novel to screen conversions...

Lynch's Dune is one of my top favorite movies of all time.

In other news, Heinz has decided to change its marketing strategy:

Very true, but for me Lynch made the Harkonnen far too Flash Gordon evil, while Denis made his Baron the blandest possible! Its very frustrating. The ideal is somewhere in the middle.

I mean, here more examples:

The Spacing Guild are a massive deal in Dune- in Lynches version they are pivotal and are established as the films 'fulcrum', but barely get seen or mentioned in Denis version. Also the way spacefolding is dealt with is very different. Lynch had massive Victorian mausoleums that blinked in and out and felt special and weird. In Denis Dune these ships are tubes that act like bridges (from what I recall)- so you have the mouth appear above which looks great and all the ships whizz out- but......its so flat. I hope if Part 2 is made the Guild get more screentime.

Another example- Lynches Dune (despite being half the length of Dune parts 1 and hypothetically 2) gave each character better screen time. I was annoyed that another pivotal character, Dr Yueh had virtually no time in Denis film, no mention of his Imperial conditioning etc making his 'breaking' more important. Denis Yeuh fondles Pauls head a few times and...thats it before betraying Leto and Paul.

After thinking about it more I'm finding more fault with Denis Dune which annoys me, given its budget and run time which add fuel to my view Denis Villeneuve makes visually spectacular but dull films.
