But Lynch's "over the top Harkonnen" elicit a very emotionally powerful impression on the audience, the vast majority of whom, like me, have likely never read the novel(s).... Lynch puts a heavy spin on things with the over the top Harkonnen.

I read Dune many years ago. A friend of mine read the the other two also, he said they where hard going.I've never read the books but I'm not a big reader, normally only going for sci-fi. Do you dune experts recommend them - are they easy to read and keep your attention on?

I struggled when books stopped having lift up flaps and spot was a dog.I read Dune many years ago. A friend of mine read the the other two also, he said they where hard going.

If you're talking about the Sci-Fi channel production from years ago it sort of hit a few high points but didn't quite get Dune (or in that case the subsequent sequel novels).Children of Dune is a series free on Prime if I remember correctly, but that would skip Messiah.
Oh, so full of Kelpians then......at the moment im reading some terrible Star Trek books.

I know, just bustin' yer chops...God no even I draw a line at anything Nu-trek.
I thought the other books were really good - not light reading, but a good yarn. Then again I like books by Umberto Eco, so I'm maybe not the best person to take an opinion on readability from!I read Dune many years ago. A friend of mine read the the other two also, he said they where hard going.
Very true, but for me Lynch made the Harkonnen far too Flash Gordon evil, while Denis made his Baron the blandest possible! Its very frustrating. The ideal is somewhere in the middle. But Lynch's "over the top Harkonnen" elicit a very emotionally powerful impression on the audience, the vast majority of whom, like me, have likely never read the novel(s).
So it may be a subtlety in the books that is not easily translatable to the big, or even small, screen and he had to bring it out for the majority of the audience. Ya know, because being in the real world means you can't always do things in the best way vs the most useful/acceptable.
I'm just guessing here but this is typically what I find with many novel to screen conversions...
Lynch's Dune is one of my top favorite movies of all time.
I'll be interested at your opinion of the new film, as I'm quite torn over it.If you're talking about the Sci-Fi channel production from years ago it sort of hit a few high points but didn't quite get Dune (or in that case the subsequent sequel novels).
I'm hoping the movie release of Dune (this week for me!) is much more faithful to the book.
