Community Event / Creation The Buckyball Racing Club Presents: Back to Pareco (Magic 8-Ball Championship, Race 1)

Heading into the final day of competition with less than 24 hours to go, the Leaderboard stands thus:

I got up this morning, determined to complete a run... no matter how long it might take, so I as I made my first run, I sang to myself: 🎶 "I like to take my time, I make mistakes when I hurry up, so I like to take my time to do it right!" 🎶

One trip to the Heart of Orion prison ship for manslaughter later...

"FULL THROTTLE AHEAD!!!!!"

You can watch me fumbling with my controls, and selecting "Station Services" instead of "Launch" ... twice... below in about 20 minutes.

Final effort coming up later today:
Can I save three seconds on each port: yes.
Can I save three seconds on every port in the same run: errrmmm....

Meanwhile from the mental side: the ATCs have taken on distinct personalities. One of them sounds as if they are glad to see me go while realizing that this wish is futile. The other is rattling though her welcome speech as if she's in a hurry to finish before I touch down. The third one asks me to restrict my speed, knowing very well that the only restriction is how much I can squeeze out of this Cobra.

After yesterday's frustrations I decided to give it a couple more goes today. I ended up doing three runs, two were slower, but the last run was going pretty well with only a couple of mistakes. And then I messed up the 15th landing at Asire, and the entry into the final station was dreadful as I missed the mailslot. It cost me a place by 2 seconds...

Run submitted.

I've reached my personal goal for Unlimited so I'll just drop this here early. Good luck on the last day racers.

That is a thing of beauty, very well done sir 👏

You know it's time to quit when you rage suicide the end of every failed attempt! Did three of those in a row ... and then had my best regulation run ever.

That's it ... I'm done.
I realized I reached that point after finally completing an unlimited run successfully, looked at my average time/station, and realized that I was slightly ahead of the baseline curve I'd established on previous attempts in Unlimited.

This race has also felt like one of the more intense ones I'd participated in, despite only being slightly longer than 20 minutes long. Not just in the sheer number of rebuys, incarcerations, and repairs caused by the repetitious cycle of dock/undock, but the sheer mental effort on keeping track of what station I'm at and need to go to... despite @Alec Turner's excellent use of Alpha-Bobbles as crib notes (especially useful in VR).

Still had fun, though, despite feeling like I'd been put through the ringer every session. Especially since I'd roll on the old Pilot's Eject Table each crash to determine the fate of my ship, and whether my character would escape unscathed. 🤕

I salute you once again Cmdr Blackwood! It must be nice to be at the top of your game! Thanks for sharing

Personally I've been disappointed with my internet tonight. It's sabotaged two good regulation runs. All the best to the commanders still out there

Couldn't get better than 13 on the regulation, I really feel ashamed.
I managed to get a 17 stops in unlimited, actually that result multiple times without any improvement. My first unlimited run was my best. Period.

I really don't feel at home in the regulation Cobra. I can't get the "dog shuffling in the kitchen" image out of my head. So accurate !

It has been nice seeing other racers around !

I also only managed a 13 stop regulation run, totally botched my final landing at Crown which cost me a 14th stop.
I thought that I'd also gotten in a 15 stop unlimited run in The Nomad (which I'd have been pretty happy with), but checking though my video I left Phillips with Neville targeted, but as I entered SC, I thought I'd forgot to select the next station and switched the Garden Ring!!!!

So I've just got my 14 stop unlimited from last night. Totally enjoyed myself though, and I wish that RL hadn't been so busy at just the wrong time.

I really don't feel at home in the regulation Cobra.
Concentrate more on unlimited than regulation then - Buckyball (for me at least) is about racing in whatever ship you like, as long as you have fun.

but the sheer mental effort on keeping track of what station I'm at and need to go to
Turns out that proved too much for me. lol (see above)
