The Exploration Discussion Thread!

On my third or fourth day of my trip to the Heart and Soul nebulas. I'm beginning to wonder if I'm cut out to be an explorer. The monotony is really a mental grind. I might have made a bad decision by not heading to the core. But I wanted to be different as everyone heads there. With the increased star density I'm sure there is more interesting things that direction. Presently I don't know if I should press on or stick my head in the FSD and charge it for hyperspace.

I was going to share a video here of a fly-by I did playing with the lensing at a black hole, but I hate Upload's video quality.

It helps to join a chat with the some others out exploring. It helps break up the monotony. It also helps stop silly accidents from getting into a routine and not thinking about what you are doing. Autopilot while exploring usually leads to either an emergency drop or a fried ship.

I went all the way to the bottom end of the galaxy before i made my way to Sag A. No, on the floor of our galaxy, jump distance between stars are 20LY or more, even had to jump back to the star i just came from because it was a dead end, THERE you will feel lonely.

Now im in between 2 spiral arms, in a blackzone, also here the stars are so far form eachother i have to be carefull not to run out of fuel. But far far away, i see light in this dark desert of empty space, 5000 more Ly, and i will be in the center part of the Galaxy again, on my way to huge neutron field, before i arrive to Sag A.

I kinda enjoy the lonelyness here. I might go crazy, and go to the 650000ly form Sol star "Beagle Point" And join the club of 24 other CMDRS that went there.

Atleast, im planning not to come back till Horizons arrived on Xbox. lol

Nah it's just a very long way and my spare time is very limited. Snatching 1k LY here and there makes for glacial progress

It must be bad if your measuring your progress in geological terms! :D

In all honesty though, I think that you are probably better off out there at the moment. I charged back due to the recent events posted on Galnet, I think things are going to get very interesting soon! But I'm struggling to make any cash (saving for 1.5 ships) since I got back from Sag A as my primary income was BB smuggling missions. I'm sure there's a reason why FD have tweaked said missions and I'm not complaining as there's plenty of other things to do, but I really enjoyed my smuggling :D

I'm torn as to just jump back in the Clipper/DBE and head back out again... :D

Guys who has had this experience: i was 10000ly from the core and my canopy hit critical and now i am on my journey back home early so and now i am not going near any neutrons or black holes scared for my life and i have like 15 mil data this game needs canopy upgrades

After my last entry I decided to shut down my ship and rest for a while. I was on my way to the head when I thought I saw one of those Xihe biomorphic pet thingies run into the cargo hold. I don't own one of those and I've never hauled a shipment of them either. I went to the cargo hold to try and find it. Nothing! While I was on the floor looking under a cargo rack I found a small puddle of what I think is some spilled Motrona Experience Jelly or maybe some Leestian Evil Juice. I really ought to get some lights installed inside the ship.

Now if they put in moving about in stations and your ship and something like that happens two things 1. it would be cool and 2. I would crap my self I have a copy of alien isolation and not played it yet as it would cause a brown trouser moment

It most definitely will.

Captain's log, star date 3115... err what am I saying? Update on my exploration trip, day umm... is it six? Really is it only six? Wow. Anyway the trip is getting better in some regards, worse in others. It's better in that I made it well past the ocean of brown dwarfs and past the space between spiral arms. I parked my ship earlier yesterday evening in a system just on the edge of the Soul nebula. Curious that I say evening though. It's kind of irrelevant talking in earth-centric terms when in deep space. Curious if this is a sign of space madness or some subconscious attempt on my part to maintain some normality in order to fend off going insane.

Anyway made lots of first discoveries, that's on the plus side. Not many of the very cool things though. Scanned a neutron and a couple of more water worlds that haven't been previously scanned. Saw two separate brown dwarfs with rings around them. Dropped in on a trinary system consisting of an O type star with two B types in very close proximity, as in deathly close. Nearly flew through the nearest B type dropping into the system. There's a pick below

It got really hot, really fast so I had to quickly maneuver away from the drop point before I could grab this shot. Which reminds me, know how I said the trip is getting worse? I'm having trouble with faulty controls, specifically throttling down. It hasn't caused a major issue yet but I'm aware of it every time I go to make another jump. I'll leave a few more snaps I took during my approach to Soul.

Rest of the trip might be delayed a day or two while I work on other things. But will report once I resume especially if I find interesting things to share.

Nice I'm starting to get another exploration itch. Perhaps to the core this time!

You probably know, but if you don't; if you look down at your pilot's hand you can put the throttle where you want it during the hyperspace jump.

Agreed it helps to look down at the throttle because during hyperspace, pressing down on the left bumper can be a little sticky. I find that if you do it during the countdown it isn't sticky at all.

[Out of character] Nah, I have throttling problems all the time not just hyperspace. It's actually the cheap Xbox One controller. The left bumper isn't working right all the time. Like it already has wear and it's only 6 months old. It felt like a cheap plastic toy to me when I unboxed it compared to the old 360 controller. My 360 controller is over 4 years old and other than some of the grip wearing off on the sticks it has given me no problems at all.

However I didn't know about the "looking down" bit. Kudos for that.

I had the same problem with my controller. Part of the bumper button itself cracks inside and bends just enough that it struggles to depress the switch. I had a older controller that I pilfered for the bumper button and fitted it to my current one, works a treat now :D

Just thought I'd let you know as its worth keeping worn out pads for spare parts. I'm investing in a Elite controller soon so I'm hoping that they will be a little more robust :D

Good news everybody! My Sagittarius A* ETA is the 14th/15 November (barring death in real life). This is more than a week ahead of schedule.
I should be home before Christmas! :D
