just stumbled upon FFED3D .........

hi Folks

just wanted to say hi and re-aquaint myself with the forum again - its been about 18 months since i was last on and that was just a couple of posts.

Back then i was trying to get GLFFE to work with no success - since then i have a new PC (but with my old and trusted XP!!) and despite messing around with a couple of payware Space Sims i just couldn't shake the need for something Elite'y' to play... give me the old 1995 graphics and the immersion that FFE provides and ill be happy, anyway after a drunken few hours surfing around the other night i came across the thread from Steve about FFED3D started last november (where have i been!!) and downloaded it that night....:D

...what a surprise I have the next day when the zip file was on my desktop and i had no recollection of what it was - anyway a more sober retracking of my temporary internet files revealed all, i installed........... and WHOA - this is what i am talking about - fantastic, at last something worth having a PC for!!

and having downloaded a few of the files from Space Sim Central i am like a kid in a sweet shop again - many thanks to all who are supporting this mod of an old classic

I look forward to staying around abit longer this time!!!

Yes welcome back:).
I gave it another try recently and although showing it's age the Russian graphical update has given it a new lease of life. You are probably wise staying with xp, Vista makes the mouse act below where it's showing (bless microsoft!), but Steve's fix on his excellent Astro/Elite site really does work.

Yep welcome back, It's a great job by those Russian lads. can't wait to see what they've done with the next update.

Welcome to the site, Robbo.

I've heard FFED3D is good, but unfortunately I can't get it to run... It keeps saying I have a d3dx9_29.dll file missing.

Not 100% sure but that may be somthing to do with dx not being installed on the computer.
But If you have played any new commercial games you should have dx9/10 on the computer?.

i had the same error message re the .dll file - i downloaded it from the net www.dll-files.com and installed it with all the other dll files in the system folder C/WINDOWS/SYSTEM - and voila - it worked:D

oh wow, this is awesome! I've got quite a few models that might go well in there. anyone wanna fly my asp?:D

ok, ok, i'd cut down the poly count a little... but really.. their poly counts are very low, anyone wanna see a few higher res models? Since i'm having such a blast with the new engine they put in, i'm keen on revisting a couple of designs... anyone know if that engine can handle normal mapping? I'm guessing no since it seems to employ vertex as opposed to pixel shading

Ah Mr Coolhand - Let the models flow mate - your work is beyond stunning!

thx steve, yep i'm thinking i'd like to make high detail versions of some of my faves, which are popular models anyway... i realise that lots are already complete or in progress and some might wonder hey, there are models in there that haven't been redone at all yet - why do the same ones over?

I mean i like the models that have been put in so far, but i think most peoples comps can handle waaaaaaaay more detailed models - esp in the poly barren environment of space - and even the planets are not that demanding on the GPU.

possibilities are the Asp, of course, the Cobra 3, and the imperial courier / trader (since its just really an additional engine over the other its essentially a 2 for 1 with those) I'm sure they would be too detailed to be accepted as part of the project but hey. i'd also like to do cockpits for each one, but i doubt this is supported. I quickly added some detail and worked on the textures of the one that comes with it but i was disappointed that i couldn't extend the geometry up past the dividing line - well, it works in space, but planets and other objects are drawn over the top of the pit at times, and it doesn't look nice. Maybe i'll tidy up what i have and post it here if anyones interested.

Also, does anyone know where i could find the assets for the spacestations and their interiors? I've got all the ships but nothing else.
