The FFED3D Thread

I do recall there was a file with all the old FE2 avatars somewhere, specially converted to run in FFE. I have it myself, but it was several years ago I downloaded it, however, and I don't recall the link.

A quick websearch, however, has revealed that there's a Torrent file for it on the JJFFE website. You'll see the link at the top of their download page.

I see it now. Shame no seeders for the torrent.

I would prefer just simple bitmap images of people rather than videos though (like FE2). If there was a patch for FFE to use these instead that would be great.

FFE3D: Help with Classified Missions

Hi I've been a player of Frontier Elite 2 since my dad first showed me it on the Amiga back in 1994. I recently got aquainted with the new FFE3D and I've been trying to do Classified Missions that appear on the Federal Military's BBS. I've tried 2 of them and both times I've had no trouble destroying the sattelite but I have been unable to find the Research Base, the +rontier blip just does not show up on the planet, no matter how close I get to it or how many times I orbit around it. I've tried coming to a stop 10000km away and fastforwarding time and just watching the planet spin (quite cool to do actually :)) but the +rontier blip just does not appear. Trying to get closer and repeating that trick results in the barren rocky planet getting a new crater :(

Any help from you more experienced pilots will be truly appreciated.

Atkins

Firstly, welcome to the forum. :)
Try saving the game before you make your final jump to the system. If the base does not appear, reload and try again. It's one of the FFE bugs left over I am afraid. Hope that helps you.

Fortunately I have done that, indeed I tried reloading before and trying again and I still ran into the same issue. I'll give it one more try, third times the charm?

Edit: Nope, no such luck. How close do I have to be to see the base? Surely 10000km away from the planet is close enough, indeed i've been as close in as 7500km and still not seen it

What you have to do is as follows:-

1. Save the game before you jump into your target system
2. Exit FFED3D and load up original FFE, JJFFE or GLFFE
3. Load your commander and jump into the system
4. Save again, exit and go back to FFED3D
5. Load your commander again
6. The +rontier marker will then appear on the planet, when you get to it

I know the above looks like a pain and I suppose it is, but it doesn't take long in practice.

I have never needed to do the above, and i do a lot of military missions.

It is entirely possible that the above is your problem, but if not then perhaps you are not reading the planet right? It can appear that you are on top of the base and close to the planet, but the base is not visible. Actually the base is on the other side of the planet!

Here is my suggested approach plan:

1) Use autopilot to get yourself within range of the target planet.
2) Identify the base. It may not show up at first, but if you go into your planetary map and click about on the planet sometimes you will hit the pixel where the base is and it will be targetted
3) Manouver so that you are approaching from above the planet and the base is along the middle vertical line of the planet
4) Move into the planet's gravity, keeping 100k or more from the surface. There is no need to hurry at this point.
5) Continue until you can see the base target begin to move towards and over the top of the planet. Drop to about 20k off the surface and follow the terrain.
6) When you are within 30k or so of the planet, start to dive towards it. By this time you will be being attacked, so i hope you brought some shields.
7) Start to slow as you come close to the base. Some planets have mega gravity and you will be pulled in to the ground and destroyed.
8) When within 1k of the base, photo it or nuke it.
9) You can now hyper out if you like, or get some height and fight the attacking ships.

At point 4) you may find that the gravity is so immense that it's not practically possible to enter the planet's gravity without being pulled to your death. This happens perhaps 10% of the time. If this is the case, just reload from the save before you took the mission and take a different one.

Thankyou that technique worked perfectly, and I had as much fun as I ever had playing this game. I located the base and managed to pull the mission off without a hitch and then had fun dogfighting all the ships that came after me (those that didn't crash into the planet at least :D). Several Viper Mk IIs a couple of Eagle Mk3s and two Imperial Couriers finally bringing up the rear (those were quite easy to take out, just park on their rear end and fire away) those Eagles however were an absolute ****** to destroy turning quicker than my Viper MkII and in a less predictable manner, but I finally got on their backside and they joined their Imperial friends in the stardust.

The funny thing is the mission was in the AC+79 3888 system so I also had a whole load of messages for the Feds to deliver. I managed to do all that and get them all in on time (the earliest one was a close call though). I even had a "hot" passenger with me (who clearly had the journey of a lifetime with me). After finishing my business with the Imperials and heading to Ford starport the assasin finally caught up with me, a case of "Oh I'd forgotten about you!" and he soon joined the rest of the spacedust.

After getting back to Eta Cassiopeia I'd done enough to earn my promotion to Seargent and earned the Vermillion Crest, not bad for my first important mission for the Feds! Shame they couldn't pay me more for it, a measly 1070 credits! No where near the amount I've been paid to smuggle Imperial Spies in and Federal Battle Weapon plans out! Not to mention all of them unopposed, I've never had a federal agent come after me in either FFE or Frontier despite the fact these pay the most. Or is it the case I'm sending false info out and bringing Federal double agents back so that's why the feds never oppose these actions:S

Thanks for your reply as well turwhitt, I pretty much worked out most of the info out myself - after several cratery incidents before hand:eek:. But I'm sure it will come in handy for later missions.

the lifter should be part of the download, as i remember it.

the model should be present into folder 18 (and folder 182).

but you can download each model single i guess, wait...

history of all models for FFED3D

new models and additional mods

i hope that'll help

oh, yes you don't need to activate a mod (GME) to get use of most of the models for ffed3d. the mods folder contains only optional models.
further some models aren't released yet or are in state of WIP and you will find PERHAPS a link to them somewhere on the site.

you got to imagine that it will be as hard for them to search one of my WIP's on SSC as it is for you to find such on elite-games.ru

time will tell...
btw, i just got in contact with sparks
looks like he's for FFED3D what i'm for Pioneer :D

with one big difference, the developer (dreamzzz) seems to have lost interest in it.

to tell in his words they was two when they started and after the rush he's alone now, still contributing models to FFED3D :(
that's really sad.

well, maybe it would help if WE show some interest in.
i mean by that do we have people here that are able to pick up dreamzzz remnants? i think so.

i will ask him from time to time (not forcing him), that we can lay our hands on the source of the wrapping (might be he hasn't it to, but hey if they are as close as i think..., well maybe some reservations because FFE belongs to frontier.dev and JJ did the basic wrapping allready for it?)

funny how we got in contact, it was because of this

i was asking for his agreement to release his ASP for Pioneer.

Nice new Falcon model available in FFE D3D

This is the beta version, but it's pretty good anyway.

Download the file from here (20.zip) and copy the extracted folder to your MODELS folder

Hey, I'm having some mouse problems and wondered if someone had an answer. It's not the Aero theme thingy, but rather the mouse movement itself. It's very...well, awkward I guess. If I move my mouse slowly the movement won't register in the game at all, and trying to aim at enemy ships is a trial of patience since the mouse look is so unpredictable.

From what I remember, this isn't exclusive to FFED3D but was also present in JJFFE. I can't remember if it was in the original game too. Anyone know of a way to fix this?

Another "problem" I'm having is that I seem to meet a huge amount of ships where ever I go. Having just started and trying to go to any other system, I'll get attacked as soon as I jump and activate autopilot+time acceleration. The longest I've lived was when I managed to fend off two separate attacks with 3 ships each, but then I died to the third wave which had 4 high-tech ships which absolutely shredded me. I've played JJFFE before, but I really can't remember being attacked so regularly and in 'safe' systems. It's practically impossible to do anything, since visiting anywhere requires me to kill at least 5-6 other ships more advanced than mine. And this seems to hold true no matter where I go.

Dunno about the mouse problem. You might want to try changing some settings in the ffewin.cfg file.
If you're being attacked in safe systems like Sol, it's possible you took on a classified mission but forgot to destroy the satellite.
In the past, the only way round this would be to start a new commander. However you may be able to fix this with Buffet.

Pretty much what Steve said. I've never had much problem with JJFFE's mouse support - it feels rather coarsely grained, but if I can snipe a fighter from 5km using pulse laser, then it's precise enough.

You all using 100 sensitivity? I'm starting to wonder if that's the problem, since I'm using 35 or so and it's really not responding well to input at all. I'll try setting game's sensitivity to 100 and instead lowering it in my control panel.

That's odd, here it's unplayable. Using a gamer mouse with 3500Dpi and 1000Hz polling rate, maybe it's got something to do with that. When I switched to 100 sensitivity in the .cfg and instead lowered the mouse sensitivity in the mouse driver, I noticed a huge improvement. Unfortunately that leaves the mouse cursor really slow as well.
