This looks like something that we've all been after for a bit - an updated graphics version of FFE. These Russian guys have done what looks like quite a spectacular remake graphics wise of FFE - now downloading it looks too be a challenge - if anyone here can read Russian - register and then DL the files then I can find a way to host them and we can all enjoy it. Meanwhile check out these screen shots.

I might have a go later to see if I can register - perhaps some clever use of Google Translator and cross referencing could get me in - the only problem I forsee is when they ask "Please enter the text you see in the picture" it's going to be in Russian and not having a Russian keyboard it might not work....

EDIT: Just tried - I keep getting some sort of error that I can figure out however!!!!

Well, it seems that "more vodka" was just enough to do the job!

Having looked at steve-o's link, it seems that all i got was the patch (a 2mb file) and not the full thing (a 66mb file).

Anyway, i can get files form that Russian site if it turns out neccesary.

Nice work - I've got the full file coming down - clearly there is no need to host tho since someone else has taken care of that for us!

Hopefully there are some install instructions

...Downloading now. Don't think my work machine will have the necessary specs though. Looks a great find (and I didn't realise good old alt fan elite was still active!)

I dunno it seemd to run ok on my work PC and that is pretty minimal - deffo not a gaming machine.

It's a shame we can't chat with these Russian guys.

I've always thought:
To hell with next-gen.
Just give us FFE with updated graphics and lots more hand-coded missions and i'll be happy!

If we could get a community effort together to make some hand-coded missions then we'd be there! No more waiting about for something that is not even definitely happening yet.

I'm on Vista and it runs for me, albeit at around 2-3 fps

I had this problem with GLFrontier; it may be graphics card or driver related but I'm too much of a dunce to figure out which.
For now I'm sticking with GLFFE.

Worth adding to your excellent Frontierastro site Steve? Or would there be legal issues? Would be interested to see other people's experiences. Nothing at all at work (win2000, no graphics card) home is Vista so I'm not hopeful. Shame, it looks really good and I agree with Turwhitt an updated FFE would make me happier than X series. Anybody speak Russian?

Very strange I got it running on a basic Vista computer which I use for the net ie no graphic card and only one gb of ram,Works fine.

Proberly as you say something to do with the open gl driver.The only thing I can think of is try turning off the Aero interface?.As I do not have it running on my Vista computer.

Also work on my xp with graphic card

Thanks Spacegamer - turning off the Aero interface didn't improve the frame rate but did cure the problem of having to click just below every icon

The fps isn't a problem in space; it just dips to about 7 or 8 close to planets.

@ Dr Baggy - Yeah, I'm a bit wary of the legal side of things

It is good eye-candy though, isn't it?

Didn't work on my home Vista. Those screenshots are very pretty! The hexes still just visible but that's a quantum leap even beyond the Hi-res versions. And the cockpit (was never keen on the FFE cokpit) is much better.
There must be someone out there who can tweak this to make it easy to run on today's systems? I'm sure someone at Frontier could but......
