The FFED3D Thread

Ok so I couldn't get ffed3d to run with my FX5500 which made me decide maybe it was time to upgrade my graphics card. Just installed a Radeon HD 2400 Pro and the game runs fine. I'm chuffed... just gotta remember how to play the game now.

I got me an ATI card as well. The game seems to run much better with that rather than Nvidia hardware.

Planetary Rings

After a nice fly around the Alioth system I had to come here and ask if there are there plans to improve the planetary rings in the Russian Mod ?

With the rest of the game being updated with textures, the white rings around gas giants don't seem to fit anymore. The thing is, what to replace them with and how easy this will be able to do. Would it be possible to texture them in order for them to look like they are made of rocks ? Taking it further, would it be possible to fly through them and see rock streams ?

Okay, I've just come back to this thread after finally digging out the FFE files I downloaded months and months ago and giving the game a crack. Enjoying it, but I want something that looks better, and this Russian Mod appears to be unbeatable.

Are the links in the first page still valid? Is there just a single file I need to download, or are there several? (I'm reading about needing to download individual ship files or something?)

I doubt my old laptop will manage that well, but I want to give it a try at least.

Thanks.

Have found it, needed to upgrade my D3D, but...

O M F G

It looks AWESOME, and runs quite well on my poxy old Laptop. I'm hooked, and I've only had a quick preview so far...hoping my old save games will work with it.

That's perhaps the next 5 years of my life sorted...

Well it does look great, but I'm finding the combat very diffcult, even after hours of playing. I've got through a few scraps, but even with 15 shield generators and a 4MW beam, I still get killed a lot more often than not. I can just never get in close enough before my opponent rips me to pieces, and it's usually luck if I get them first. Put me up against two or three tough opponents and I've no chance.

Mouse-Control seems very jerky for a start...are there ways to smooth it, because I've set my Windows Mouse to very slow, but it doesn't seem to make any difference?

Stay out of trouble, buy a good ship, equip it to the hilt and... practice! ;)

Currently FFE D3D is quite demanding on the computer's resources. It may be your laptop isn't of the required spec :(

A couple of things I used to do (normally only against one enemy though). You can click on the enemy ship with your autopilot and get the computer to line up ready for you to fire.

Another thing I did when I had more shields and a better laser was to turn my engines off so I was only flying straight. Makes you a bit of an easy target but you can still rotate and line up on the enemy when they're lining up on you (just make sure you pull the trigger first).

I guess I was used to the combat being really easy in FE2, and opponents being very crap. I would hit my retro-thrusters with them at the bottom of my visual screen, such that they seemed unable to hit me. As they got nearer to me, they would approach the centre of my sights, and as soon as they were there I'd unload a volley of beam-laser fire. That doesn't work anymore.

I've tried the up/down/left/right thrusters using the number-pad, but they don't seem powerful enough to confuse my opponents either. What tends to happen now is I use my main thrusters to try (not always successfully) to avoid the initial burst of enemy fire, then I just do my best to get someone in my sights to blast them.

I'll try using Auto-Pilot to see if that helps...

You can't use the Autopilot for combat in FFE. It was Frontier where you could do that.

I fly in at high speed to the left or right of an enemy, brake hard as i come alongside them, turn and shoot. There is usually a big enough target to make it count.

You are using the mouse for combat, not the keys, right?
