The Galactic Mapping Project & Historical Archive of Exploration

Map Update, #3477-3537 [Note: Start after post #3555 for future updates]

This bunch had a lot of things that were not quite notable enough. Usually this is because they're common in some sense, and the submitter just likes the way they look. Nothing wrong with that, but they don't reach the level needed to add into the GMP.

Added:

  • post #3481 / Dreamer Blush - original discoverer Gobo Senbei could not be contacted, submitted as-is
  • post #3489 / Starburst Nebula
Not Added:

  • post #3479 - this might be worth adding but we need more description/details
  • post #3480,#3485, #3486, #3497, #3530 - redundant/already done
  • post #3482
  • post #3496 - it's not a contact binary unless they're literally touching (not just exclusion zones or we'd have way too many)
Updated:

  • GRS 1758-258, GRS 1730-312, GHJ2008 3 (High quality descriptions, well done)
  • Shrogaee Nebula photo, Cmdr Vovva The Bluehaired
  • Oceanus Coelis photo
  • Heliotropeia Monoceratos changed to Historical Location

* post #3490

Hi, just wondering what happened with my submission? post#3491 (Umber veil nebula, and Abzu Lodestar)
Were they decided on yet, pending or missed? Or was it because I also posted them on the DW2 discoveries thread?

Thanks

Somehow missed during review. Umber Veil has been approved and added. Abzu Lodestar does not meet notability for a PN.

I'm quite new to the game and am excited about the things I'm finding in it, and that there's a place to share them that could result in my discoveries being recognized. If they're not worthy of your attention then I'm jealous of your extensive experience.

The first page of the thread has some general guidelines, reposted here.

The guidelines are :
  • Candidate entries should be something unique or rare. This can be anything from statistical record breakers or visually spectacular locations to places of historical interest or with interesting stories behind them. A good rule of thumb is this: “Would another explorer be willing to travel thousands of LYs to visit this place?”
  • Your entry should be something you've visited personally. Please provide documentation of your visit in the form of screenshots or video. Any “glamour” image that you would like to see added to the map entry itself should preferably be resized to a with of 640 pixels.
  • Only choose names that fit within the spirit of the game. Please no silly phrases or POIs named after your commander. For ideas you can check out the real life astronomical naming conventions, or choose something completely different if you prefer - as long as it is sensible and not like this.
  • No renaming of real life places or FD named places. We are only replacing procedural names and not renaming catalogue stars like HD, HIP, etc.. However it is acceptable to submit an entry for a real-life astronomical object under its real name.
  • All submissions should be considered as player created fiction only. If FD rename any in-game POIs for whatever reason, the GMP will follow suit and rename entries to whatever FD do.
  • All submissions are treated in the chronological order they were submitted to this thread, regardless on whether the person submitting the entry has in-game 'tagged' it or not. Please bear in mind that the GMP team update entries and EDSM in their spare time so on the whole we will use this thread for the vast majority of entries. It is unpractical and too time-consuming to scour other threads for POI names explorers have made mention of.
  • Older POIs usually stay on the map even if the game evolves to make them less rare finds. One example of this is Jumponium-Rich systems. These used to require a lot of effort to find and verify, but new scanning mechanics have made it much easier and they are no longer considered rare. But to honor the hard work originally put into locating these, we are not removing the ones already on the map.

Name:
Planet of Slightly Lesser Death
GalMap Ref:
Blaa Eohn YZ-G d10-0
Description:Like the infamous Monde de la Morte (Spoihaae XE-X D2-9), this system consists of a planet which orbits perpendicular to the core white dwarf's jet cones close enough to pass through them at either end. While not passing as near as the exclusion zone unlike its eponym, the cones themselves still create a severe hazard for landing which should not be attempted while the planet is inside the jets themselves.

Discovered during preparation week for the Distant Worlds 2 Expedition the system's general proximity to the bubble proved to be a decent journey and risk experimentation with spectacular views down the cone of a white dwarf for early explorers and veterans alike.

On DW2 return journey from BP to Colonia I happened upon Phleedgaa UJ-Q e5-185. Not sure if this has already been submitted since some of the bodies have already been discovered on the system map, but the very attractive nebula Source: https://imgur.com/KmGp4WU
(I named it the "Bloodshot Eye Neb" , best observed from nearby system Phleedgaa ML-Z b45-26) did not appear on the galmap until I selected the system, and my EDDiscovery is crashing, though this neb did not appear as far as I'm aware.

This system has a NS with planetary nebula and THREE NSP: Luteolum Cloud+Rubeum Xtals & Solid Mineral Spheres NSP at planet 3, Ceruleum Storm Cloud NSP near 1f, & a pink Storm Cloud (type did not show on screen) + Solid Mineral Spheres NSP near 5g, 3a has 15 geos, 3c had 14 geos,2a has 9 geos, 1b has 10 geos, but short of time so didn't investigate these.

Planetaries are not accepted unless they have some special features like nearby black hole "dissolution" or unusual bodies inside

I stumbled upon half-discovered blue planetary. It has a usual two-sphere shape but about 3 times smaller than other such objects (plus has two binary WW inside). Is it noteworthy?

UPD: There are actually 3 such tiny nebulas nearby

The double-lobe feature isn't all that unusual if you do a review of all PN, but as usual, if you can sell it as interesting, go for it. My gut reaction without any other information is "not noteable". On the other hand, if it's in an area devoid of other PN, that's noteworthy.

Minor Update - Image Fixes/Additions Only

  • Dance of Cerberus, Cmdr Vovva The Bluehaired
  • Les Infants Terrible, Cmdr redthorne

  • Oupailks Furnace (post #3,687) - Cmdr silversheen
  • Ignis (post #3716) - Cmdr silversheen
  • Mushroom Nebula (post #3796) - Cmdr Heavy Johnson
  • Niteo Gigans (Iwhaind AA-A g1771) reclassified to Historical Location (post #3816)

The Needed Photos thread has been updated with links to the systems, so please check there and see if you're near one of the ones we are missing photos for and can detour. Thanks!

Name:Abyssal tellurium fields
Game map search ref:Puwaae GQ-G D10-0
Description:planet B2B is populated with cystalline shards yielding 100% tellurium integrated with CO2 ice fumeroles yielding phosphorus and carbon
Screenshot reference: Source: https://imgur.com/a/taMezCj

Similar to the Polonium fields except yielding tellurium. Useful for SRV repair and AFM premium refills. Also a good view of near by gas giant, moon and galactic plane.

Beacon Of The Galaxy

Hypiae Ausms AA-A h321

The system contains 3 pairs of O-type stars which is the absolute record in the explored space. Four of stars are located close to each other 18 000 light seconds from the exit point. The main body of the system is a immense star of 70 solar masses, accompanied by much smaller neighbour. The former one is so large that it can be perfectly observed even being near the farthest two pairs.

P.S. Of course I have not discovered this system myself, but I really feel that a record of most luminous (without considering WR of course) and relatively rare stars should be on the map.

By the way, is it possible to rename POIs that you have previously submitted?

Well, I`ll make a post later, so you will see for yourself and make final conclusions depending on the actual thing.

Well a nice fumarole spot seems to be deleted. Maybe a planet or coords are wrong but mountain seems to be very similar.

Nevertheless the discoverer did not notice that 2 landable moons are actually located between the rings of a Jupiterish gas giant or maybe did not consider it as a notable feature.

wow..... you REALLY got a thing for heatsinks, don't you?

Well, it is a long-range cruiser that is fitted to remain without external maintenance for several months or years, so extra heatsinks are not useless. Yeah, you can start to talk about mass, but when you have to choose between additional 1.5 ly and more chances to save ship from overheating, in my opinion, decision is obvious.
