The Galactic Mapping Project & Historical Archive of Exploration

Name: Elephant's Trunk Mine
Game map search ref: GM Cephei
Description: The Elephant's Trunk Mine is an asteroid base situated within the inner rings of a gas giant. The occupants of the station, the Mapas Dynasty, value their isolation: the station is 2,700 ly away from civilization. In addition to mining, which can be done literally next to the station (as long as Commanders stay out of the no-fire zone!), the base sees plenty of traffic from tourists as well. Interested Commanders can hire on not just people who want to head farther out into the galaxy, but also those who wish to head back to the inhabited worlds.

New POI:

Name: Fetus Nebula
POI type: Planetary Nebula
GalMap Ref: Lan 111

Desc: "The Fetus Nebula (also called NGC 7008) is a planetary nebula with a diameter of approximately 1 light-year located at a distance of 2800 light years in northern Cygnus. It was discovered by William Herschel in 1787, in Slough, England. The nebula is a deep blue which is further enhanced by the colors of the O-type primary. Several other smaller stars and a few rocky bodies are also present."

Gorgon Research Facility

Name: Gorgon Research Facility
GalMap Ref: NGC 7822 Sector BQ-Y d12
Description: A research facility operated by the Life Sciences Expedition. This fully functional asteroid base offers most standard station services, including a Passenger Lounge and Universal Cartographics.

New minor POI:
Name: Scylla and Charybdis
POI Type: A "field" of at least 10 neutron stars, 1000Al below the plane in The Perseus Transit
GalMap ref: FLYUE HYPE WT-R D4-0 & AA-Q D5-1 + FLYUE HYPE AA-Q D5-0, around 30.030:-1050:7100

Desc: Scylla & Charybdis is a 100Al high section of the Perseus Transit, 1000Al below the plane, and very low star density, containing a surprising (to me at least) number of neutron stars. At the suspected middle of the field sits a system containing an ELW and two water worlds, which, because of its position its named Odysseus. The name Scylla & Charybdis originates from the pair of neutron star systems that were first detected and led to the discovery of the field.
The field could in fact be much larger, at least a neutron star having been identified 1000Al from there at the same "altitude".

POI Update:

POI Name: Cocoon Nebula
GalMapRef: V1577 Cygni

Desc update: "The Cocoon Nebula (also known as IC 5146) is a blue-brown is a reflection/emission nebula located about 3200 Ly from Sol. The nebula sits at the end of open cluster Collinder 470. The nebula is also home to an asteroid-based base (see Cocoon nebula base entry).

Travelers to this nebula should be aware that due to charting errors, Universal Cartographics currently lists two different systems with the name 'V1577 Cygni'. Travelers are advised to manually search for 'Cocoon Nebula' to find the correct location."

Sadr Logistics Depot

POI Update:

POI: Sadr Logistics Depot
GalMap Ref: Sadr Region Sector GW-W c1-22

Desc: "Located inside the Sadr Region nebula, this asteroid base is positioned in the ring system of a gas giant. `The station is run by the Sadr Operations Initiative, an independent democracy which seems to be based on local mining of the pristine rocky belt located here. The population is small at only 1500 souls. The station offers all services except for a ship yard and outfitting. The view from the station is excellent - the orange-yellow of the local gas cloud and good viewing of the nearby Pelican and North America nebulas."

Not added:
- The Harmony (megaship POI currently discussed)
- Fisher's Rest (megaship POI currently discussed)
- De machinis exspiravit (as it's obviously a glitch in the game)
- D'artagnan And The 3 Musketeers (although quite a sight, as a galactic feature it's still too common)
- Nokon and Konsho (orbiting WW-TC's are still just too common)
- Little Brother (same here: orbiting gas giants are quite common)
- Purgatory (ELWs are very common, even when distance-measured against SgrA*)
- Scylla and Charybdis (neutron 'fields' or groups 1,000 ly below the plane are well known and not that rare)

Thanks for all the fantastic submissions. The galaxy wouldn't be the same without you :D

How about an oddball?

Theta Orionis C should be part of the Trapezium Cluster within Orion Nebula, but the cluster doesn't seem to be in game, and that particular star is about 1500 LY in wrong direction when viewed from Sol.

So the whols Trapezium Cluster missing, at least one of the stars flung 2k Ly haywire - Thargoids or something far worse?

Thanks for the update, Andrew.

I see a few submissions not mentioned - did these get overlooked, or just not included on the list?

* deGrasse nebula (post #1368)
* Fetus Nebula (post #1404)
* Cocoon nebula asteroid base missing (post #1408)

Ah my bad. I was working on two posts here. deGrasse and Festus were added, Cocoon isn't as there is neither a description nor an image available. If you can do that that'd be awesome.

By 'missing' I mean that there is an existing POI entry for that asteroid base in the given system, but the asteroid base does not exist in game; see the reference post for a screen-shot of the system.

Okay, deleted. Let's see when the 'real' Cocoon base turns up; if there's one at all :D

Amazing colors on those images. Is this vanilla ED or do you use some kind of in game effects or post-processing?

I've got a photoshop macro that auto-balances colour, scales it down to 640, and sharpens to crisp it up a little. I'm usually flying in VR and the screenshots from the desktop mirror look pretty bleh at default. So yeah they're modified, but only a teeny bit :).

Possible Addition

Praea Euq PP-D d13-4

Neutron Star with very close companion Red Dwarf; orbited very closely by an Orange Dwarf and then distantly by a third Red Dwarf.

Definitely a bit of a navigation hazard!!

The system has a total of 14 Planets, mostly HMCs.

It's also quite high up above the galactic plane

It was first discovered by Comdr True Phoenix.
